Williams, Lucinda - Car Wheels On A Gravel Road Lyrics
Sittin' in the kitcken, a house in macon
loretta's singing on the radio
smell of coffee, eggs, and bacon
car wheels on a gravel road
pull the curtains back and look outside
come on now child we're gonna go for a ride
car wheels on a gravel road
car wheels on a gravel road
car wheels on a gravel road
can't find a damn thing in this place
nothing's where i left it before
set of keys and a dusty suitcase
car wheels on a gravel road
you better do what you're told
when i get back this room better be picked-up
car wheels on a gravel road
car wheels on a gravel road
car wheels on a gravel road
low hum of voices in the front seat
stories nobody knows
got folks in jackson we're going to meet
car wheels on a gravel road
cotton fields stretching miles and miles
hank's voice on the radio
telephone poles trees and wires fly on by
car wheels on a gravel road
car wheels on a gravel road
car wheels on a gravel road
broken down shacks engine parts
could tell a lie but my heart would know
listen to the dogs barkin in the yard
car wheels on a gravel road
child in the backseat about four or five years
lookin' out the window
little bit of dirt mixed with tears
car wheels on a gravel road
car wheels on a gravel road
car wheels on a gravel road
car wheels on a gravel road
car wheels on a gravel road

One thing you miss by moving to the big city.
Impossible to put it in words just how good this song is
@John Artois
I agree. Sad that so few people even know Lucinda William's music.
@Hammerschlägen M She has written so many great songs. Have you ever seen "Can't Let Go" video of I guess a motorcycle ride through a part of Switzerland, (I think). Great song, good video.
@John Artois
I checked it out.. and left a comment thanking you. Seriously, I've always loved the scenery in Switzerland and her music was perfect.
Thanks again
@Hammerschlägen M Yeah, I came across that video a couple of years ago. Like you said I already knew the song but the drive along with the music is a great match. Thought it was a motorcycle but can see it's not. A friend of mine introduced me to Lucinda Williams about twenty years ago. Have just about every one of her cd's now. To me she's one of the greatest of our time. Love "Sweet Old World" and so many of them actually. Another singer/songwriter to check out if you've never listened to is Kim Richey. A different style but she has written some great music and can deliver it very well live. So many songs to choose from but maybe start with " Didn't I ". Like I said a different style. Hope you enjoy.
@John Artois
I'll check it out. Thanks
Awesome....id like too buy her a drink or 20
Song about my life! Love this ❤🌹
Cars are no more, my 1987 Voyager Van did more off road driving than most SUV's. Seeing Lucinda in Bethesda MD on September 24, 2019. Nice video, thanks!
Love this song
Ass kicker..love you Lucinda..many memories made with the album..
This is one seriously excellent album. I have seen her live. First time, she was opening for Neil Young.
Sheryl Crow vibes
Dirty Tears never dry.
'57 Ford Fairlane 500 coupe?
Love this song. Pretty much my childhood growing up in the Adirondacks. Lots of gravel roads and fishing trips with my Dad.
Happy Birthday Lucinda <3
Child in the backseat, about four five years, looking out the window. Little bit of dirt mixed with tears. Car wheels on a gravel road.
Besides her First CD ''Lucinda Williams'' S/T, This is My Favorite LW CD.
Also one of the best concerts i've ever seen, she's awesome
I'm a metal head, but I have every Lucinda album loaded in my truck stereo
Definitely one of the top albums ever made!! Years ago I would hear bits of Righteously. It drove me crazy because I had to figure out who she is. I have seen her live and have most of her albums. She is epic!!!!
Wow she blows me away
Man. I was definitely late in hearing about her. great!
Great version
I need my windows open with fresh air drivin an old truck on a gravel road....
My mom always used to say "come on child were going to go for a ride"
Reminds me of my country upbringing for sure. Thanks for memorializing all that stuff ... :)
You can see what she sings
the high watermark for miss lucinda doubtful she'll reach these heights again but aren't we all lucky she did, a masterpiece
LoVe Lucinda!
O yeah for Mile's and mile's on a gravel road in America.
THIS RESONATES IN MY....SPINE!!
I really like : I'm crying and Drunken angel. I'm Crying is the theme of the film "The Free State of Jones"
cmon now child we gonna go for a ride.....................I just never get sick of this one. So relaxed and so powerful at same time. Pure poetry.
Thanks,Ms.Williams!I was raised in Macon,Ga,back in the 60's..This brings back many a GOOD memory!
Pharoh Williams
Fab video! Nicely done!
this time Lucinda's on the radio :)
Gravel road stirs my thoughts toward my passed Dad's sayings about them. "Farmer asked where the hell did our gravel road go to, it's not pushed into the ditches? The county roadway engineer told him, it has drifted onto your fields... as it was pounded into dust, from your many comings and goings down it. 'River Bottom Poetry' Dad called it... Likened unto the descriptions of the fields being so wet, that if a buzzard was to fly over it, his shadow was sure to curdle up into it. Thank's for the memory stir Ladies. -gilpin 12916
this makes me think of king of the hill

muy buena...
I think of all of the SUV's out on American Roads and most of them haven't been on a Gravel Road much less off road in the wilds of America. It's a damn Shame.
+1stSaintsFan Not really. Our news feeds would be full of stories about an idiot in their SUV who got bold and...
There's a saying in the Air Force: There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are very few old, bold pilots.
1stSaintsFan ,lol Ok remember once we were unloading equipment and a bitch in a Land Rover had to drive halfway on the grass and she gave us a dirty look and yeld something rude at us. I yelled back this the only time your ride has ever been off road. Everyone laffed and I never paid for a drink that night. Probably some azzwipe I saved from a flooded area . MAGA
Shamrock Rancher ...lol..I bet old, bold pilots drive CHEVYs...Gravels are a hoot....especially if its a 2 lane, 15 mile stretch with 50 + Coal Buckets to spice it up...lmao...while my knees are knocking..lol...
Mine has, have a look at my site.
It's a Rambler Ambassador Not sure what year but best guess would be 1956
@jeff slater : Good one, Jeff, yes. I thought at first it was a '58 Chevy, but the emblem on the glove box decided it for me. It's a little hard to make out, but I do remember that distinctive script. My Dad had a Rambler American, a wagon.
Lucinda Williams is a one of a kind artist. Love her.. saw her live in Lowell Massachussets. Little honey is her best work in my opinion. Female Kurt Cobain
bill collagan, IMHO, better than Kurt. Certainly worlds away from “Courtney Love/Hole”...
Hell, my dog howls better.
“Yoko Ono” junior, LMAO...
;>D
OMG, Courtney killed Lucinda too!?!
don't ever insult lucinda like that again
Female Dylan
Please Everyone
Can ya'll tell me what kind of:

Please Someone can respond?
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road - Lucinda Williams
Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
Town in Carolina - Mary Chapin Carpenter.
You've pretty much got America covered. Oh wait, throw in Warren Zevon's "French Inhaler" or "Desperadoes Under the Eaves" to make sure LA gets its due.
+1tishhead Only if you think all of America is white, straight and works in a factory.
+1tishhead I'd throw in Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City".
It's a small town (Talking at the Texaco) - James McMurtry
The Mary Chapin Carpenter song is actually called: I Am a Town. Great song!
Mr. Williams
Great job.
One funky tune!!!!
Students, welcome to "advanced songwriting ". You're instructor will be Ms. Williams.
Wow. So true!! Lucinda is the best songwriter of this genre I have ever heard.
Her father was a poet
Miguel - the comment by Tom Gray is spot on, but you know that.
At which point this semester will we be covering bitches and hoes?
I have some interesting lyric ideas about drugs and bling also.
I always thought it was kartwheels, not car wheels! I'm not sure I can make this adjustrment!
So did my wife...she said that would hurt your hands! Lol
when my daughter was tiny, she'd sing, "car wheeee-eeels on a grandpa rooooad!!"
Caroline Stevens that's very funny!
Caroline Stevens: I, too, misinterpreted the song title as "Cartwheels..." after hearing the song for the first time all those years ago -- before I bought the album and learned of my mistake!
didnt listen did you ?
This song makes me cry. She does not sing it, she lives it. Lucinda is a true artist and this album is a work of art musically. Critical albums like this come very rarely, so rare that I appreciate it even more.
I agree, this is a great album and she is a great singer !
Check out Kurt Vile
Trang Le the very first time I listened to carwheels I thought only someone who grew up with my grandmother and my mother could have written this.
Lucinda is awesome, but this has to be her best song!
Cute song!
Which Hank is Lucinda talking about when she says "Hank's voice on the radio"?
No more calls, we have a winner.
DingusTheGenius their is 3 generations of Hank's you fucking nitwit Hank SR, Hank JR, Hank 3rd, all related
Williams sr.
@AmericanHillbilly There' s Hank, Hank Jr and Hank 3rd....you fucking nitwit, (to use a phrase I heard somewhere)
@AmericanHillbilly But only Hank Sr. counts
One of? ;-)
Case Histories brought me here
You must be joking.
It's one of the finest albums of ALL TIME ;)
i thought it was cart wheels on a gravel road... i have to say i think i prefer it that way
got turned on to lucinda because of her opening for levon (RIP levon)
I love Lucinda!!!
thank you so much for putting this up! great video to match a great song
Thanks Starbucks.
Key in the door, too.
This is really how DV feels, you focus on the sounds of coming and going of danger.
You did a nice job capturing the song's vibe. :)
Car Wheels On A Gravel Road is one of the finest albums released in 1998.
The track on the gravel road bothers me.. lol the right side curves to the left a lil bit but the right side doesnt.. lol im such a dork
very cool
Nice video Sherry, I almost thought I was back in Kentucky, say about 1969.
Lucinda l love you ! Coolest chick for sure
