Williams Jr., Hank - Tennessee Stud Lyrics

Back about 1825
I left Tennessee very much alive
I never would've got through the Arkansas mud
If I hadn't been ridin' on the Tennessee Stud

I had some trouble with my sweetheart's pa
One of her brothers was a bad outlaw
I sent her a letter by my Uncle Fudd
And I rode away on the Tennessee Stud

The Tennesee Stud was long and lean
The color of the sun and his eyes were green
He had the nerve and he had the blood
And there never was a horse like the Tennessee Stud

We drifted on down onto no man's land
We crossed the river called the Rio Grande
I raced my horse with a Spaniard's foal
Till I got me a skin full of silver and gold

Me and a gambler couldn't agree
We got in a fight over Tennessee
We jerked our guns and he fell with a thud
And I got away on the Tennessee Stud

Well, I got as lonesome as a man can be
Dreamin' about my girl in Tennessee
Tennessee Stud's green eyes turned blue
'Cause he was dreaming of his sweetheart, too

We loped across to Arkansas
I whipped her brother and whipped her pa
I found that girl with the golden hair
And she was ridin' on the Tennessee Mare

The Tennesee Stud was long and lean
The color of the sun and his eyes were green
He had the nerve and he had the blood
And there never was a horse like the Tennessee Stud

Stirrup to stirrup and side by side
We crossed the mountains and the valleys wide
We came to Big Muddy and we forded the flood
On the Tennessee Mare and the Tennessee Stud

Now I've got a little baby on the cabin floor
A little horse colt playin' 'round the door
And I love the girl with the golden hair
And the Tennessee Stud loves the Tennessee Mare

The Tennesee Stud was long and lean
The color of the sun and his eyes were green
He had the nerve and he had the blood
And there never was a horse like the Tennessee Stud

JOHNNY'S VERSION STILL THE BEST ALTHOUGH VINCE GILL DID A GREAT JOB. HANK PUTS HIS OWN SPIN ON THIS WHICH MAKES IT COOL

  2. M.... B....

We are a proud southern land. Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bocephus says it all

  3. K.... K....

    Amen. Country blood

  4. J.... ....

Nothing like a big tall Tennessee Walker to make some miles! Quarter horses be damned!

  5. R.... L....

    love this song

  6. M.... L....

Great redo of the Eddie Arnold song. This album is excellent, had a blues theme to it. Hank's late 70s-early 80s stuff was the best. We wore out his records and cassette tapes back then

    M.... L....

Jimmy Driftwood wrote it, Doc Watson made it famous

  7. A.... D....

ahhhh the sweet relief when the banjo cuts in

  8. A.... ....

This would be a good movie

    A.... ....

No, it's too masculine for Hollywood, they'd either severely feminize it or they wouldn't know what to do with it.

Boy am I getting an education this morning. I had no idea this song was written by a fellow named Jimmy Driftwood (what a name) or that the same fellow wrote He Had a Long Chain on and The Battle of New Orleans. There's a reference to this song in one of my poems -- which you can hear on my channel (One Summer in Bloomington).
If you juxtapose the song with the poem you'll get a fascinating example of artistic cross pollination.

    Saddle up boy

  11. L.... B....

Anyone else remember a song on his black album, that was about a Tennessee walker?

  12. W.... P....

I grew up on Doc Watson's version here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, not far from the Tennessee and North Carolina lines.....But I grew up on Hank Williams Jr's version of this classic too, I love them both!! God bless y'all all!!

  13. G.... ....

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the upbeat tempo.. I've have never liked when someone takes a mellow song and plays it in a fast and upbeat tempo, even if it's Hank Jr.

  14. M.... a....

I think this song was from "The New South". Correct me if I'm wrong.

  15. b.... b....

Sounds like my palimino, except Trigger is a gelding. His father is Pride's Generator and his mother is Crump's Sugar.

    b.... b....

I have a palomino that is also a gelding and this song reminds me of him

Tennessee is hard to beat. Chattanooga will keep you busy checkin' out the history. Be sure to visit the Chattanooga Choo Choo. the Battlefield National Park is a fine reminder about our nation's volatile past. The donated collection displayed in the gun museum is world class. Easy to like Tennessee. :>) Our Historic Time Proven nation is well worth fightin' to keep. Let the others Keep their 'Change'. If you do nothing but Vote, VOTE Like YOUR Life Depends on it.....It Does.

  31. w.... ....

This version is waaaaaay better than The version done by Cash and I bet Cash would agree or he wouldn't have done it. The banjo and mandolin make it better, just my opinion!
