Williams, Hank - Thank God Lyrics
There's a road that's straight and narrow
That the saints have travelled on
Paved with all the tribulations
Of the martyrs that have gone
If you're grateful for their vict'ries
Then give thanks for all your blessin's
Get on your knees and pray.
[CHORUS]
Thank God for ev'ry flower and each tree
Thank God for all the mountains and the seas
Thank God for givin' life to you and me
Wherever you may be, Thank God.
In this world of grief and sorrow
There remains the Glory Fountain
To supply our every need
You can find it in the temple
With a welcome on the door
But be sure to count your blessin's
Before you ask for more.
[CHORUS]
Be forgivin to the wayward
Like the Master told us to
When He said forgive them Father
For they know not what they do
They would change their way of livin'
If they could but understand
So remember they're your brothers
They need a helpin' hand.
[CHORUS]

Actually, Hank grew up drinking. He was drinking moonshine before his teens. Drinking did not come as a last resort to kill the pain, as someone down below mentioned. That was life then, it's still a part of life in many parts. People deep in the Bible, growing up knowing of Jesus, can quote multiple scripture and 100s of gospel songs, all while drinking some form of alcohol. He died at night, and with his system full of booze. These facts don't take away his talent and only God and him know if he personally knew the Lord. I hope he did so that he's in Heaven chillin in a new and healthy body, pain free and singing with the many other greats who went before and after him.
I hold a special place in my heart for Mr. Hank. My mother's folks come from central Ala. and were all musical, so as a child, I recall so many jam sessions sitting by my dad's chair, feeling the heat of those old tube amps, slowly dozing when my cousin Virgil would break out with "Lost Highway!" Later, as a teenager, I had a severe back injury which has plagued me the rest of my life...40 plus yrs as a country musician, no less. I forgot to mention that my cousin Virgil Girlie played with Hank a bit before he went on the road. Virgil's wife was having no part of that! I eventually played "Lost Highway" for Virgil on his deathbed. Then, by chance I rambled into Shreveport, La. and got hired on the second Hayride Band, and ended up being the last musician to be photoed in front of Hank's house here in Bossier City, la. Just before they tore it down. In closing, I am proud to say I toured with Claude King for many thousands of miles who knew Claude quite well. If you could have only heard some of those late night conversations we had over a glass of Ammaretta! You can find me on youtube and Facebook as Gary Buchanan.
You sir have had a epic journey!

Always Thank YHVH!! YAHVEH–YAH John 5:43 "I have come in the name of my Father, and you have not received me. If another should come in his own name, him you would receive."

Nehemiah is where the Israelites built city walls.
Neh 12:46
For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving unto God.
Neh 12:47
And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, every day his portion: and they sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites sanctified them unto the children of Aaron.
thank GOD FOR Hank and his music. Hank has this new country music beat all the way...
And his beautiful sermons in all of his gospel music.
Yes- Yes- Yes, a 1000 times!
I couldn't find this song on the web, I really like this song, I am finding so many new Gospel recordings by Hank Sr.
Thank God for Hank Williams!!! Jerry
Despite the medias image of hank williams as a drunk rebel rouser, hank knew the gospels inside and out. He believed every word and in many ways was a preacher himself. He wrote many many many powerfull gospel somgs that spread the gospel in ways no preacher could at the time. He was singing god into people's homes that never heard the gospel before. Reality was hank wanted to be a gospel song writer and not a star. His wife is to thank for pushing him into stardom. Hanks once said " there slicing me up like baloney"....meaning they was selling him like a product. Hank didn't like that life and near the end of his life was actually quitting. He returned to playing streets and small places. My " theory" is hank was worth more money dead than he was alive especially since he didn't care about being a star and was quitting. I think hank was killed to make money after his death. Nobody can donut he was more famous after his death than he was alive

Sometimes two drinks can do that to an alcoholic, especially if combined with something like morphine. There's a great book I'm reading called "Sing a sad song", and it's all about the life of Hank Williams. It explains his alcohol abuse in that book. I highly recommend it. It's very inexpensive on Amazon.
By whom up in those mts where everybody loved him and for what? Hank jr heard alot of things just like evreyone else.
Hank was also on morphine. Morphine is synthetic heroin. Hank not only drank but was a full blown drug addict. As for the bruises he was known to get into bar fights and was extremely intoxicated at the time of his death. His driver had to carry him from place to place the night he passed. I've woke up after really hard boozing and drugging and found bruises on me from falling, bumping into things, etc. I don't believe he was beaten or that there was some kind of conspiracy. The people around him at the time cared about him. He himself predicted his own death to the day literally. When Audrey left him he said "if you leave me now, I will not live another year. He said that in 1952. He died on new year's day 1953. It's spooky for sure, but nobody killed Hank but himself. The only one to blame for his death was his "doctor" who practiced without a license. He got sued. Hank had spine problems and took too much pain meds for it because it not only made him feel better but got him high. 2 drinks put him under the table because he was so fucked up. If you are a severe alcoholic 2 beers will get you drunk because you've drank so much that your body can't handle it. The liver quits working right. My great uncle is a full blown alcoholic and when he drinks 3 beers he is back to where he was the night before. His liver has shut down and he will die of it soon. My uncle is not on herion but he would be dead already if he was like Hank. Alcohol is a drug like meth, crack, or herion. It's literally just as deadly. I've seen it with my very eyes
Me too - the 78 of "Lovesick Blues" ..... i was a little bit older ... but I have the same passion .....
I never tire of this one, it's just so good. Unadorned, honest, direct. Just his guitar. To think he could sing these words even though he was in pain all the time.
One of the very best singers songwriters ever!
I love God more than anything
Hank was born with spinel bifida and was allways in pain, so he turned to Drs and pain meds and when they were not enough he drank and then he passed a line and couldent go back and he became an addic. That is the way with us who have the illness of addiction. He turned to the only One who would listen to him and that was GOD. Sometimes someone has to die for us to live. Thank you Hank for reminding me that I must thank God many times a day for all that I have, and that I do not have.
Thanks for posting...great song Hank ....thanks bikerdude
Very Beautiful true song!
He WAS singing about REAL LOVE!
yes indeed
i think sleeping under the willow tree is very good an deep emotionall
Hank as "Luke the Drifter", I allways love his songs. He was and is the greatest!!
Glad i came across this song from Hank Sr. Never heard it before. Thanks for posting. Compiling my own list of his gospel songs.
I'm glad you find inspiration in Hank's gospel songs and I'm very glad you love Jesus. Hank has probably inspired many to find the Lord with his simple honesty and that is good. But it is Jesus who saves us. I think one of the problems Hank dealt with was the people made him a god. That is too much responsibility for any human. Hank had many problems. He honestly sang of most of them. But they didn't dim his love for Jesus. We can be thankful for that.
What an awesome song with such wonderful lyrics! I have heard so many of his songs but I have never heard this one. Thank you for posting it Deb.
this particular song was written by his manager and publisher Fred Rose actually. he was a Christian Scientist, Rose was.
Beautiful song. I'm not a believer but the sentiments ring true.
First.
