Williams, Hank - Six More Miles (To The Graveyard) Lyrics

Oh the rain is slowly fallin',
And my heart is so sore,
Six more miles and leave my darlin',
Never on this earth to meet no more.

[Chorus]

Six more miles to the graveyard,
Six more miles, long and sad,
Six more miles and leave my darlin',
Leave the best friend, I ever had.

Oh I hear the train a-comin',
Bringin' my darlin' back home,
Six more miles, to the graveyard,
And I'll be left here all a- lone.

[Repeat chorus]

[This verse not on record, but in both early song books:]
Left her in that lonely church yard,
Left my darlin' alone,
Now I'm sad, my heart is cryin',
As i wander thru life alone.

Listening to this,a fter watching Ken Burn' show last night, I have to wonder, did Hank write this because his mother, Lillie, had passed? She gave him the idea for 'I Saw The Light"....which is a beautiful song, as well... nothing Hank did was bad....

    I.... ....

They say he wrote the song

A worker that worked for me about 1999 I would stop and pick him up every morning and I had a Hank tape he would say please not that old stuff again then out of the blue one Friday he said you think I could borrow that Hank tape over the weekend he's a life long Hank fan now and I will always be Hank's music will last forever

  25. B.... J....

Hank Williams created a lane all to himself. You can't compare him to any other country artist, he's so far above everything else in the genre. I like all the old 50s-60s country, but nothing embodies country music, to me, like Hank does. One of the few artists who solely defines an entire genre, his catalog is more country than country itself lol. Oh and please don't get salty, commenting about haggard or twitty or whoever your favorite country artist is.

  26. T.... G....

This is the real country king

  62. T.... B....

One of the best country artist ever

    T.... B....

    @Triston Smith
     Jupp - you´re right !

    T.... B....

Yes! Love the Bakersfield sound! Grady Martin is also one of the most underappreciated musicians in American history... Hank Garland as well.... I live and breathe all of the artists that you mentioned - is that ever good stuff! Real music, made by real men and women... Nothing made in the last 30 or so years, even comes close, IMO.

    T.... B....

    The Best.

    T.... B....

    No, he is the BEST!

  63. B.... W....

I listened to Hank Williams on the radio in the early 50s before he died. He was a good singer but had lots of problems. Loved his music then, was just a teenager, & still love it today. His life was cut short due to back problems & addiction to pain meds to help him endure the pain. Cried when they announced on the radio he had died. Life was way too short for him but his music lives on thru all the media & the Internet. He was a good singer.

    B.... W....

Jennifer Turner spinebifida, I believe it's called...

    B.... W....

"Back problems". It's also called having a 🐒 on your back.
"...tell me, Hank whyyy do yuh drink? Why do you blow smoke? Why must you live out those songs that you wrote..."
"...put yourself in my unique position. If I get stoned and sing all night long, it's just a Family Tradition." - Hank Williams Jr.

    B.... W....

@Jennifer Turner True. He wasn't just a junkie. He was shooting 🌟. It's the fate of some people to burn brighter.

    B.... W....

@Jennifer Turner If you read her comment correctly, she said he suffered from problems & needed the meds to help him get on stage to do the shows! She never said a word about him being a junkie!

    B.... W....

@Karl Bush You're full of it! He drank & kept a Dr.(that in reality was a quack) he gave him $300 a week! To supply him with meds to kill his back pain. It's never once even been hinted at that he shot up! Get your facts straight before disrespecting some one with lies!

  64. T.... ....

Hank is the best man, he's there to guide your way when you're down. And he can help you see the absolute beauty in life, and what it is that we all strive to live for. R.I.P Hank, thank you

  65. e.... j....

yes shawn that is true.   although my introduction to the song knowing the hank williams one first was life at a social d concert

  68. B.... ....

    ..Someone once said:
..for Hank, Song Writing was an Emotional Thing -
    not an intellectual one

    B.... ....

@BillyBorders whoever said that is right.

    B.... ....

i listen to hank on a daily basis. hank 3s country is right up there with him. he would sure make his grand daddy proud!

    B.... ....

BillyBorders it was never said better...

  69. N.... c....

His best song hands down, after this on the list would be "I Saw The Light".

    N.... c....

+Nirvana cana - I read another fellow said "I Can't Help It", others said other songs. Hank had quite a few as various favorites to many

  70. J.... R....

Greet song, Greatest entertainer, Mike Ness of Social  Distortion  does his part to keep Hank's songs alive by doing very respectful cover of this classic.

    J.... R....

That is who brought me here, and who introduced me to real country, a music of which I called pure torture before

    J.... R....

My story is same in reverse Hank lead me to social D.  Pretty cool. The older I get the less I pay attention to genres. Good Music Is Good Music. And if it sucks, it sucks.

    J.... R....

Too bad mikes a lefty...hank was all American, never woulda suckerpunched somebody over an election or yelled F the prez!

  71. 1.... ....

I think he wrote this song while living in Andalusia, Alabama in 1944.

    1.... ....

I DIDNT KNOW HE LIVED THERE

    1.... ....

He played 3 shows a week in Andalusia and 1 show a week in Opp. Those were my stomping grounds including the community right in the middle called Babbie.

    1.... ....

    @*****
Thanks for sharing that info. I had never heard that particular recording. No, I wasn't around then. I'm only in my 30s, but my entire family is from Opp and Andalusia. My grandfather on my father's side was actually mayor of Opp for a short time. I was born in Enterprise but I spent a lot of my time in Babbie. My great grandfather laid a lot of the tracks all through Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana that Hank's father ran the log train on. He fished with Hank, and also played baseball with him. They had a little fun baseball league back then. My grandmother got to see him play down there all the time and that's where I first heard about Hank. I didn't get into his music till late in high school, but I've been a fanatic ever since. I recently was able to get "The Garden Spot Programs 1950" record, and it's great. Now I'm going to try to find a record for Mother's Best.
