Williams, Hank - California Zephyr Lyrics

From the Great Salt Lakes of Utah to California's golden shore
Colorado and Nevada through the deserts burnin' door
While she's circlin' through the canyons, can't you see that mountain stream
It's the California Zephyr, the Union Pacific Queen

See her rockin' see her rollin' as she rambles on her way
She left LA this mornin' burnin' up the right of way
In the distance hear her moanin' hear her lonesome whistle scream
It's the California Zephyr, the Union Pacific Queen

She leaves the city of the angels headin' for ole Santa Fe
She's a makin' nauts she's makin' time just watch her swing and sway
And from way out in the darkness, see that headlight gleam
It's the California Zephyr, the Union Pacific Queen

From the Great Salt Lakes of Utah to California's golden shore
Colorado and Nevada through the deserts burnin' door
While she's circlin' through the canyons, can't you see that mountain stream
It's the California Zephyr, the Union Pacific Queen

Williams, Hank California Zephyr Comments

Downloading this for my Zephyr trip!

Who was the fool who disliked this?

Despite the glaring inaccuracies that are mentioned in this song like the California Zephyr being a train that serves/served Los Angeles and Santa Fe as well as it being a Union Pacific train, it's still quite catchy and well-written. I wonder if someone will do or has done a more accurate and/or up-to-date version of this song someday.

Yes, indeed. The train back then was out of three companies, one of it the Western Pacific Railroad. Wikipedia says, that the California Zephyr was a rival for the City of San Francisco, which was partly operated by Union Pacific.
Hey, I rode the California Zephyr several times, never knew, that there's a song about it. I also really like Arlo Guthrie singing the City Of New Orleans!

    Great tune .

one of the best train songs ever wrote

Hank Williams wrote this song, with the intention to record it as a single.  But he never lived long enough to do so, making this "Unreleased Recording" a rarity, and a special treat for all Hank Williams fans.  It was Williams' attempt to bring "train songs" back into popularity in Country music, by singing about the Union Pacific Railroad's best vacation and tour train, which still runs today.

+Larry Ressler Sorry Larry, but this song is full of poetic license. The California Zephyr was not a Union Pacific train and it did not go to LA or Santa Fe. It ran from Chicago to the Bay Area over three different railroads, and UP was not one of them.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, but it is not historically accurate. If you doubt me, google it.

Perhaps when you listen to this song.... you should contemplate the genuis that wrote it? I, myself have no earthly idea how he did it. Perhaps, others can decipher it..... his songs have been in many movies, copied and sang again and again..... these modern singers, in their vain hope, aspire to have their music outlive them!

KEITH VIRGIN I am a musician myself, I play mostly blues, jazz and country from the 1920s,1930s and 1940s, and I write songs in the vein of the old blues musicians, and I can agree with you. Hank Williams wrote songs so quickly but with so much quality! I’ve been on a Hank Williams binge the past 3 years, and I have been fascinated with how he wrote his songs, and I will say, he was a poet in many ways. We’ve got remember he lived out most if not all those tunes he wrote, so he had the soul in his music, but the way he got those lyrics to flow and put them together so well seems like the work only a genius could do. My great grandpa, great grandma and grandma (my grandma was very young at the time) saw him play at the grand ole Opry, and the love for his music passed down from my mom to me.
