Williams, Don - Old Coyote Town Lyrics
He's got a U.S. flag on his front porch
To remind everyone where he lives
And up in the attic there are papers that prove
The old house is finally his.
After thirty-five years the grass still don't grow
Where my old dad still clings to that old coyote town.
[Chorus:]
Like horses the pick-ups are parked out in front
Of a cafe that don't need a name
Where the old men rock and the tumbleweeds roll
Past the boarded up windows down Main.
Waist high weeds hide a for sale sign
At the drive-in where my innocence died
Says Popcorn and Pepsi for a dime.
And down at the depot where I left for good
There's a hobo with his three-legged hound
Waitin' for a train, that no longer comes
To that old coyote town.
And the interstate rumbles like a river that runs
To a rythm that don't ever slow down
As cars and trucks, and time pass by
That old coyote town.
Daddy falls asleep in the living room
On the sofa with the TV on
Sometimes he waits for a phone call from me
Sometimes he waits too long
But I still think of the people and the place that he loves
How much longer will they be around
Till its ashes to ashes, dust to dust
For that old coyote town.
[Chorus:]
Like horses the pick-ups are parked out in front
Of a cafe that don't need a name
Where the old men rock and the tumbleweeds roll
Past the boarded up windows down Main.
And the interstate rumbles like a river that runs
To a rythm that don't ever slow down
As cars and trucks, and time pass by
That old coyote town.
God bless that old coyote town...

Williams, Don Old Coyote Town Comments
The best ever
Don Williams is a beautiful mind. Sticking pictures
Strikingly beautiful pictures painted by this beautiful man with beautiful mind.oh, God bring another Don Williams, I pray thee in Jesus name.
Don Williams is a beautiful mind. Sticking pictures
Another one the greatest hits missed. He could have easily talked about Floydada, Texas; but most likely was talking about Midland-Odessa or even Gordon(small town in Palo Pinto).
I am from a small town in Texas and this song brings tears to my eyes each time I hear it.
George Jones sang "Who's Gonna fill their shoes?" Nobody will ever take place of the Gentle Giant.
O wow can't believe you got that record for only a dollar!
I love this song. It stirs a lot of emotions for me. I was a DJ around this time period and remember when this song was released. It reminds me so much of Americana and how time passes so quickly. Those places like these exist around different parts of the USA. A reminder of how the good and simple the ole days once were, and how they pass you by. I can picture my dad on his front porch or sitting in the garage listening to his radio. Times gone by. And the scratch on the vinyl at the end adds even more to the song. Great touch. Bless all of the older generation and Don Williams. RIP.
Wonderful Song
RIP Don Williams
Thank you KS Music
Love the vinyl scratch; that´s quite a different feeling to the perfect sound of the CD. Somehow the characteristic scratch on a vinyl disk is like kind of a signature that gives each record a unique touch, not to say something like a soul.
Quality music Don Williams is Americana brand for so many years, not too many meets this simple standard these days, his voice sings the lyrics of songs, that so perfectly match a time an era in the lives of many perhaps old or new fans. The connectivity to memories that always snares the feelings in your heart, God has the need for these tunes as he gave us the pleasure of his great talent. God rest your soul our friend Gentleman Don Williams.
Easily my favourite DW song. This first started playing on the radio when I was away in college for a few years. Mom & Dad liived a long way into the country while I lived in the city. In 2000, I moved back home to help Dad out on the farm. But he died only two weeks later.
My absolute favorite Don Williams song
Don Williams was so great that nobody ever realized what they were missing. This guy was fantastic. I never missed a concert of his. If i could get there!! We are all so much poorer and deprived by his passing!
He's got a US flag on his front porch to remind everyone where he lives

With a rusty advertisement dangling by a nail says popcorn and pepsi for a dime
And down at the depot where I left for good

Can't say enough! Thank you Don for all the years of wonderful music! This one well it's one of my favorites! Will miss seeing you on stage but you'll always be here in spirit!
On the Eigth day God created country music
Anyone knows anything about this old coyote town? Is it a real town? Superb song from the hugely underrated legend
Great song
Dedicated to my grandpa, RIP, P.T. King, 11/19/18.
Song so under appreciated...love and miss you Don...
I love this song
Larry Boone wrote and recorded it. His version doesn't touch Don's. RIP Don Williams.
It reminds me of my youth days...I so miss Uncle Brian.we used to waltz to ths song.
One of the best Don WIlliams song as well as Country Music in general . It hits the right spot in your soul . Gentle Giant . Continue to rest in peace ! All the way from Zambia , Africa !
Who could possibly hit dislike for this song? He is was and will always be; The Man.
I wish you people would quit worrying about how everyone else reacts to this song.
Obsess about it to yourself if you must.
Great singer and great songs! Don Williams was such an influence on me and is so missed. I was so humbled by the review in Bluegrass Today from 2013: "Houser’s love songs are sweet and mellow, with a gentle vocal delivery. I’ll Be Alright and Reasons Why are reminiscent of Don Williams, both sharing the singer’s undying devotion. The title track shares the same sentiment, with the singer asking the one he loves to just let him “bear [her] gently down life’s uneven road.” the review was by John Goad. https://bluegrasstoday.com/uneven-road-mark-houser/
I always loved this song..words are so haunting..it takes me there..R.I.P. Don, you were much loved on this planet. .
I remember being a kid and spending my summers riding around with Grandpa in his old pick up truck and this song always came on the radio Brings tears to my eyes but ranks in my book as One of The BEST Country Songs ever
Anyone who grew up in small towns around America can identify, simply beautiful.
Lost Glen Campbell August 8th, Don Williams exactly a month later. I worshipped those two men. And, yes, Don Williams was largely underrated and ignored by country fans, radio, awards shows. Not sexy, not controversial enough. I have a teenage daughter to whom I introduce all kinds of great performers and music: the Beatles, the Stones, the Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, Glen Campbell, Jim Reeves, etc. IT IS UP TO US TO PASS ON THE NAMES and THE GORGEOUS PERFORMANCES OF THESE PEOPLE. WE KEEP THEM ALIVE IN OUR CHILDREN and THEIR CHILDREN.
Well said that man. Many thanks Sir. We live in hope ? yes? Ken . (UK).
I said thank you to my dad for introducing me to Don Williams. It's perhaps the best thing he has done apart from showing me God.
Yes don williams should have been given more credit than he received.
Loraine, TX. Interstate 20, rock hard west Texas ground. "Cafe that don't need a name.( The Creemee), tumble weeds rolling down boarded up Main Street

Rest now, Mr. Williams.
Rest now, Mr. Williams.
A Legend! Forever to be missed. You showed the way. What is sung now is rubbish
Rest in peace Don Williams
RIP enjoy your music
R. I. P. Mr. Williams.
Dios siga bendiciendo esa gran nacion i love tx
Anything like this nowadays?
Can't help but be taken back to my West Texas roots when I hear this song. love it.
The greatest of the great. Thanks for posting.
sad truth is a lot of the old guard are to country for country radio country now sounds like 70's and 80' rock
One of faves...
Don would hit #5 with this on 4-8-89.
He sure did. This country gem deserved to go #1 for Don on Billboard and 2 weeks at #1 on Radio & Records.
Such beautiful words and melody..I know every word of it..as cars and trucks pass by that old coyote town
This might just be the best country song ever!
If not a top 20
I remember listening to this song and thinking of my dad shortly after this song came out in 1989 he didnt live long after that. song still moves me to tears.
@levi jones Levi, I know what you mean. This song reminds me of my dad. My dad committed suicide at 78 years old.
+oriolesandravens I feel for you Levi. I'm sure you still have that empty feel down inside. So sorry.
Good for you 'Grandpa'
Love u daddy! Alvin Wade Gore Sr!
that voice he talks to me straight to my heart! i love so much him!
This song and good ole boys like me and send me down Tucson transports me back to my childhood and listening to my mom singing these songs
Send Me Down to Tucson was Mel Tillis, not Don Williams, but a great song nonetheless. RIP Don Williams.
Don Williams is one of our greatest underrated country singer songwriters. All of his ballads have depth and so much truth, in my book he ranks with Haggard and Jones as one of the best.
@David Hanshaw Why do you even give a shot about that?
It's not important whether younger people know him so shut up about it.
David Hanshaw what are you talking about? I'm under 40 and my 20something year old sister knows Don Williams. I am also Nigerian. Don Williams is well known in West and East Africa. Don Williams IS (not was) the BEST country singer in the world, period!
He should be in the Hall Of Fame
Whoever claimed he was underrated?
Larry Boone, one of the co-writers, had the original idea and finished it with the Nelson brothers. ASCAP Work ID: 450196968
Mark Whitlock ,
Probably a Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert fan. True morons. I hope they see this and really get upset and send me a nasty message.
I never could find this song THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING!
Makes me homesick every time I hear it...
Sounds like....home :)

Paul Nelson, Gene Nelson i believe written at 1204 16th Ave S
By far, my favorite Don Williams song. It makes me think of the small North Carolina town I grew up in, and, miss so much.
Auberry. California. Home sweet home
.....no comment this is to beautiful
It just touches you deep somewhere............ so nice
1989 was an amazing year in country music; the legends were winding down, but still had great music and the new generation (Clint, Vince, Garth, Alan, Travis, Patty, Suzy) were amazing with more modern material.
a great song
This song was originally on Don's 1987 album "Traces", but the song wasn't released until "Prime Cuts" came out in 1989.
