Williams, Don - Lord Have Mercy On A Country Boy Lyrics

Well, I grew up wild and free
Walkin' these fields in my bare feet
There wasn't no place I couldn't go
With a twenty-two rifle and a fishing pole.

[Chorus:]
Well, I live in the city but don't fit in
You know its a pity the shape I'm in
Well, I got no home and I got no choice
Oh Lord, have mercy on a country boy.

[Instrumental]

When I was young I remember well
I'd hunt the wild turkey and the bob-white quail
The river was clear and deep back then
And fishin' lines tied to the willow limb.

[Chorus:]
Well, I live in the city but don't fit in
You know its a pity the shape I'm in
Well, I got no home and I got no choice
Oh Lord, have mercy on a country boy.

[Instrumental]

Well, they dammed the river, they dammed the stream
They cut down the cypress and the sweet gum trees
There's a laundra' mat and a barber shop
And now the whole meadow is a parkin' lot.

[Chorus:]
Well, I live in the city but don't fit in
You know its a pity the shape I'm in
Well, I got no home and I got no choice
Oh Lord, have mercy on a country boy...

  54. L.... a....

Found out today I lost the land that I've hunted on my whole life. For 30 years I shared great memories with my father and family and in one day its all gone. The owner gave the land to her daughter and she told me that i'm not welcome there. I only wish I would have had a place to take my son to enjoy the same memories.

    L.... a....

Lead and Broadheads I am so sorry :(

My father grew up here where I am and his grew in Oklahoma

So my grandpa raised my dad the way he was raised in Oklahoma

They ran hounds here in the California foothills and mountains

On ranches. Best and lion. Looked down on or not it is what it is

My father stopped running hounds but never stopped hunting and raised me hunting on public land. When I was about 13 he got a gf whose daddy had a ranch. Long story short they aren't together anymore but we still get to go on that ranch. It's not like when my dad and gpa had all these ranches around cuz the ranchers liked dog runners, but it's still a lot of land to ourselves. I truly feel where you are coming from and I often wonder if I'll be able to make ranches a thing for my sons when I have them some day. I am 23 now and will never forget what my father has taught me. Some one will surly understand and give you permission on their land i can't imagine any one who understands hunting that would say no. Again I'm sorry that you lost that land

    L.... a....

One day soon...they're gonna tell you the same for the whole fucking country...white boy!

    L.... a....

It's happened to me. The most of the land I grew up on has been turned into subdivisions, what I have left is at the mercy of real estate investors.
Had a beautiful place where something similar happened to me, parents died, kids clear cut it and subdivided.
It's more than a shame it's the biggest injustice in history. Private property has only been around since the 18th century, before that, what was yours was the land you lived on. Private property is unjustified authority, a legal fiction and an excuse to plunder and muder as much as the owner wants, the loss of non human life is what hurts me the most. The world is turning into a very lonely place for us humans, and nothing will be able to right the wrongs we are doing.

    L.... a....

@rat bastard what are you trying to imply with this post? Why are you bringing race into this?

    L.... a....

Same thing happened to me two years ago can't stand people like that

  59. S.... ....

I haven't heard this song since it was current back in 1990. Right around the time when Friends in Low Places was out. But the chorus survived in my head all this time. I only stumbled here on accident by inquiring who Don Williams is and he makes good songs!

  60. D.... W....

ACC's #58 song of the '91 survey year. Don hit #7 in Billboard, 8-10-91. God bless you, friend, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a blessed New Year!

  61. H.... R....

one mans music that never gets old

  62. E.... K....

I 'm flying to Nashville Tennessee in two days to ask Dolly Parton where Don William lives!

  63. r.... ....

I want to know who thumb down this song. They don't know good country. Come on its the Gentle Giant! Guess they never hunted wild Turkey and Bob Whites. Or grew up in the country to even understand the meanin a this song. Hell when I was 10 it wasn't nothing for my Dad and Uncle to give me a 410 pump and turn me loose on 300 wooded acres! They never let me take the .44 Anaconda out though HAHA!

    r.... ....

well said . when this came out in 1991 I know this would be a hit. I have his 2 disc collection called don Williams gold formally sold as anthology but the song true love is on it but not this song. and iTunes don't have this song considering iTunes has don Williams music but not this one. I played my guitar and sang this on my YouTube channel.
