Williams, Don - Cracker Jack Diamond Lyrics

Well he spent that summer walkin' door to door
With a can of gas and an ol' lawn mower
That's a sure fire way to make a buck when you're fourteen

Well he walked the block with no luck at all
Then he spotted a place where the weeds were tall
With a young girl sitting on the front porch eating' ice cream

Deep in the pocket of his grass stained jeans
Was some caramel corn and a plastic ring
Leftover from the week before
Momma didn't wash them thank the lord

[Chorus:]
Just like a Cracker Jack Diamond,
You never know when your gonna find one
They found love from that day on
The hand of fate put them together,
Their hearts will stay forever young
Like a Cracker Jack Diamond

Well it's been five years since he gave her his prize
Now the sparkle's gone, but not in their eyes
And he's wanting to tell her what's been on his mind lately

He said, girl I ain't rich but I've been saving up
A little ever day 'til I had enough
Before he could finished she said, you know I will baby

Deep in the pocket of his holy jeans
Was money for the preacher and a diamond ring
He took her back to that old front porch
Slipped it on her finger and he thanked the Lord

[Chorus:]
Just like a Cracker Jack Diamond,
You never know when your gonna find one
They found love from that day on
The hand of fate put them together,
Their hearts will stay forever young
Like a Cracker Jack Diamond

once a year she takes it out but it don't fit her hand
she wears it in her heart
that's where it all began

[Chorus:]
Just like a Cracker Jack Diamond,
You never know when your gonna find one
They found love from that day on
The hand of fate put them together,
Their hearts will stay forever young
Like a Cracker Jack Diamond...

[Instrumental to fade]

This song was one of Don Williams best. Should have gone #1 on the Billboard country singles chart and would have 10 years earlier in 1988. Barely hit the top 70 in 1998, years after Don Williams was no longer considered relevant with country radio. R.I.P Don.

Even back in 1998 or 1999, still had potential to hit #1 on Billboard if radio bothered to play this song enough.

I have this album it's featured on and it's a wonderful album. I won a copy from a country radio station in my home state of New Mexico and all we had to do to win it was listen for the song Cracker Jack Diamond and then call in. I was one of the callers and a friend of mine took me to the radio station to pick it up. He won a copy earlier and brought me there later on after he told me to be listening to win.

I never get tired of listening to Don Williams. He has one of those voices that you know it's him as soon as you hear it. Too many of today's singers sound too much alike and it's hard to tell some of them apart, especially when they first get started. Not with Don Williams. I am THRILLED to see he has a NEW album out as of June 2012. I missed a great opportunity to see him in concert this past weekend. I hope another chance presents itself soon to see this true Living Legend in concert.
