Williams, Andy - Laura Lyrics

You know the feeling of something half remembered
Of something that never happened, yet you recall it well.
You know the feeling of recognizing someone
That you've never met as far as you could tell, well.

Laura is the face in the misty light,
Footsteps that you hear down the hall.
The laugh that floats on a summer night
That you can never quite recall.
And you see Laura on the train that is passing through.
Those eyes, how familiar they seem.
She gave your very first kiss to you.
That was Laura but she's only a dream.

I've always loved the story about how the melody of this wonderful song came to be written. The film was in mid-shoot when everyone connected with it realized that they had something truly remarkable in the oven. Up until then, Otto Preminger (the director) had intended to use Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" as Laura's signature song; but David Raksin, who was writing the film's score, had always felt that it deserved its own original theme. Preminger said to him: "This is Friday. If you can come up with something suitable by Monday morning, we'll use it." Raksin went home, and created this exquisitely haunting melody over the weekend. Any man who could write this, AND the score to "The Bad and the Beautiful" was truly kissed by the gods in his cradle.

EXCELLENT points all! I was named after this movie....my (then) teen-aged mother had a huge crush on Vincent Price Price and also adored Gene Tierney. Lucky me.💕 Never miss a chance to see the film, and LOVE this version of the title song. HUGE Andy Williams fan besides just this.

How did he do it, sing so powerfully, yet sing so softly, all on key??

The orchestral arrangements by Robert Mersey are absolutely gorgeous.  Dave Grusin is equally wonderful on piano backing Mr. Williams.  E.g., "It Might as Well Be Spring."

Re-listening to Andy after a long hiatus makes me realize that his voice truly was one the greatest of the 20th century, ranking right up there with Sinatra, Matt Monroe among others.
