@Robbie Newman I'm a bit surprised to read that it didn't officially chart, as I remember my local Top 40 stations playing this quite a bit (even in the month or two after the attacks). It's possible that it didn't get promoted as much as it could have, but I figure I Wanna Be Bad had more staying power due to the hooks.

Willa and Britney absolutely didn't come out at the same time, Britney was an old Mickey Mouse Club star who released her first single "Baby one more time" in 1998 when the whole teen bubblegum pop and girl/boy bands were hot. She had a clean image in the beginning (like they all did, Willa had it too when she was trying to make it under Mandah-name and released the song "Lullaby" on the Pokemon soundtrack) but somewhere around the year 2000 people were slowly getting tired of it and many pop stars turned into "dirtier" versions of their old selves. It worked for a while, but by the year 2001 the music industry was over-saturated with blonde pop singers with skanky image, which is when Willa came out with "I wanna be bad". While the song became a hit, Willa didn't really have anything new to offer compared to her blonde collegues, on top of this her style of music was already slowly going out of fashion... in 2002, the biggest thing was Avril Lavigne with her sk8er punk anti-Britney image. Willa sunk into obscurity very fast, not because she was such a "bad girl rebel"; but because she had nothing new to offer and her sound got passé. Some of the more popular pop-singers who had been around for longer and had a bigger fanbase were able to continue a bit longer, and very few of the bunch (mainly Britney) remained famous while many big names haven't managed to retain their popularity nor reinvent themselves (ie. Christina Aguilera).
