Wilco - Any Major Dude Will Tell You Lyrics

I never seen you
Looking so bad my funky one
You tell me that
Your superfine mind has come undone
Any major dude with half a heart
Surely will tell you my friend
Any minor world that breaks apart
Falls together again
When the demon is at your door
In the morning, it won't be there no more
Any major dude will tell you
Have you ever seen a squonk's tears?
Well, look at mine
The people on the street
Have all seen better times
Any major dude with half a heart
Surely will tell you my friend
Any minor world that breaks apart
Falls together again
When the demon is at your door
In the morning, it won't be there no more
Any major dude will tell you
I can tell you all I know
The where to go, the what to do
You can try to run but you can't hide
From what's inside of you
Any major dude with half a heart
Surely will tell you my friend
Any minor world that breaks apart
Falls together again
When the demon is at your door
In the morning, it won't be there no more
Any major dude will tell you

Wilco Any Major Dude Will Tell You Comments
  1. R.... H....

Listening to this SD song today and thought "this sounds like something Wilco would do" and here I am.

  2. a.... ....

In a perfect world, Donald Fagen would do a cover of Wilco's "Impossible Germany."

  3. a.... ....

Always take me back to my first Steely Dan concert in April 1974 at the U. of Toledo, where Donald Fagen generously let 19 year-old percussionist Royce Jones sing lead on this one.

  4. L.... R....

I love Wilco but can’t seem to swallow this cover of my all time fav SD song

    L.... R....

Why? It really doesnt diverge too far from the original. They do a very nice job, imho.

  5. J.... M....

Perhaps if they checked the fake book on this one and got the chords right, it could be a go.

  6. S.... O....

A true Dan fan can pick this apart at least they gave it an honest shot

  7. V.... M....

Hey Charlie, you ever notice your kids have sort of a year-round tan?

  8. J.... W....

its sloppy compare the drumming to the orginal it sounds like a elvis costello b side

  9. j.... b....

It's an OK cover. It could have been worse.

  10. W.... F....

cute little goober heads gotta have some brains to cover great music p

  11. J.... ....

he doesnt say have you ever seen a squonks tears right.. he says spocks tears.. spock doesnt cry vulcans do not show emotion like that

    J.... ....

No, it's "Squonk's tears". Per Songfacts, A Squonk is a mythical woodland creature who has the ability to dissolve in its own tears. Steely Dan came across the word in a book by Jorge Luis Borges. Genesis also makes mention of this animal in their song "Squonk," from their 1976 album A Trick of the Tail.

    J.... ....

(this is my alternate account) Mike, i KNOW what the actual lyrics are!! OBVIOUSLY! But the guy in this cover song says "Spocks" instead of the correct "Squonk's". If there's anything I will never need schooling on, it's Steely Dan facts as i know them all.

  12. P.... S....

Great cover of a classic song.

  13. C.... G....

it's got a pleasant driving beat,a little more than the venerable original.Nice vocals.Very good.

  14. p.... ....

Twelve people were playing with their noddy organs.

  15. S.... M....

    LOVE!! Thank you so much.

  16. E.... ....

I think Wilco are a very fine band but this really doesn't do them any justice... Steely Dan's version has a lot more feeling than this and that bloody organ is so painfully annoying... Steely Dan are a band that simply are too difficult to copy with any degree of success..

    E.... ....

EnosEverything so fucking true my friend

    E.... ....

    I like it.

    E.... ....

Well what do you expect idiot? This is their song.

    E.... ....

    I actually like the organ.

  17. r.... ....

Are these the same little piss ants that wont come to Indianapolis over RFRA but will play in 9 other states with the same law????

    r.... ....

    +rcg5960
Are you the same little piss ant that doesn't understand timing or making a statement?

  18. F.... ....

Great song from the Dan + Good cover by Wilco = a pleasant listening experience.

  19. N.... O....

    I like it a lot.

  20. o.... ....

Nice cover of a Steely Dan classic.

  21. P.... B....

Spoiled for me by the noddy organ...a pity.

  22. R.... L....

Thanks for this post. I usually hate covers. They nearly always fall a  little short or worse. You don't see many Steely Dan covers because they were THAT good. This is thoughtfully arranged for a bar band ( as opposed to SD who wore out the BEST studio musicians). This is a respectful cover. No It doesn't have quite the soul or grace as Don and Walter but they make it their own. The little Jazz accents are glossed over or adapted to Organ. The guitar player had a very tasty solo, it's a hard space to cover but if it sucked you'd know. The organ really picks up all the stray pieces and makes this work.!

    R.... L....

Robert Lane well said RL. Agreed it's a nice effort.

  23. D.... N....

I first heard this cover at a Starbucks. The funny thing was that I was listening to Steely Dan on the way there.

    D.... N....

    A cheer- up song...

  24. b.... ....

Ivy does an interesting "Only A Fool Would Say That"...

  25. C.... O....

The Dan reign supreme but admirable effort

  26. E.... ....

Even though it can touch SD's original version - this has a pseudo Beatlesque spin @ 1:30-35 w/ that clanging "I'm the Walrus vibe', kudos to them, first 'cause they must dig some of Steely Dan's material and secondly, were brave enough to cover it. They pulled it off in their own way.

  27. m.... ....

Not particularly good, they sound crude compared to SD.

    m.... ....

i agree i dont like it

  28. j.... ....

This is a disgrace to the dan. i hate it

    j.... ....

Wilco should record every SD album just to chap your ass :^D

  29. C.... C....

    wilco = jeff

  30. u.... ....

can't beat the dan but this was pretty tight

  31. u.... ....

jeff got the squonk lyric wrong. its ok i had no idea what a squonk was until i googled it.

  32. M.... E....

the Dan is hard 2 cover, too complex...can you imagine R.E.M. stumbling and mumbling thru this?

  33. C.... ....

It is okay, did not like the substituted vocal parts.... hmm left something to be desired. If I cover a tune, it should sound as good (at least) as the original artist. Wilco ROCKS, don't get me wrong!

  34. l.... l....

@payday0023 when i heard this song for the first time (which was about 10 min ago ... yeah ... i know) i thought it was a grateful dead song. that band could've def pulled this song off in a quality way. i was shocked to find that it was actually done by steely dan. but i saw this youtube post and said what the hell i'll hear the wilco ver too ... and then i read your video description and thought it'd be good to add my .02.

i wish it were possible to hear the grateful dead cover this song!

    l.... l....

paragshah2112 the dead are done horrible show at fenway

  35. s.... d....

    Good work, Johnny.

  36. s.... ....

    thanks - had no idea!!!

  37. K.... P....

@JonnySoonami I think sometime around 2000 for the Me, Myself and Irene soundtrack

  38. K.... P....

@starrymooney I think sometime around 2000 for the Me, Myself and Irene soundtrack

  39. J.... ....

    when did they cover this?

  40. u.... ....

@ultrakool oh wait, deh wit barry o? nevermind

  41. u.... ....

belleville...jed clampett, jimmy conners and jeff tweedy, all champions. good cover

  42. T.... T....

Its when the demon its at your door.. Hence in the morning "it" wont be there no more. It probably wouldn't bother me as much if it was some no name band at a local bar, but for Wilco to record it like that is a bit disrespectful to Donald.

  43. T.... G....

A tasteful rendition, as always with Wilco. Kinda sounds like they missed a few chord changes in that "when the demons are at your door" part, though. Whateva.

  44. D.... C....

Me, Myself and Irene soundtrack is full of SD covers

  45. J.... C....

@mezzetin1 opinions are like assholes, you know the time this man has spent to be where he is? He's been touring since he was 18. He's by far the best songwriter os a generation.

  46. m.... ....

this is an abomination, and tweedy is a lazy ass artist, if you wanna call him that.

  47. g.... ....

    then what?

  48. D.... N....

I stand corrected. I was at both and must have gotten them confused.

  49. j.... ....

Oh my ...this is a great great cover

  50. J.... ....

    Me, Myself, and Irene anyone?

  51. 3.... ....

    oowwwchhh....eewwww...nice TRY

  52. J.... X....

I changed my mind this cover is badass

  53. D.... N....

    Awesome.

God Street Wine, a NYC band that drew comparisons to SD in the late 80s / early 90s also did a wonderful version of "Any Major Dude" at their reunion show at the Gramercy Theatre July 10th. I believe it was the only time they actually covered SD, though I could be wrong. You can find it on the Internet Music Archives. I suggest checking it out.

  54. M.... H....

This is OUTSTANDING! Thank you for posting it!!!

  55. J.... H....

    That's a Gathering

  56. L.... C....

Great how they added the hammond organ and the little changes in the chords.

  57. y.... ....

excellent cover, has its own caracter, i would go to their concert any time, very good work!!

  58. e.... ....

@twisteddsister wow...fancy meeting you here...you just never know who you'll run into to these days...btw Joe's cover of this isn't too bad either....

  59. L.... ....

    @hatriarch you serious, clark?

  60. M.... E....

never thought anyone could compare to the Dan....... i was wrong, not jazzy enough, but still great!!!!!!!!!!

  61. D.... B....

I and I grow more and more fond of Wilco with each new meeting. Thank you payday0023 for posting this very good cover. Peace.

  62. K.... P....

Yeah, mostly google images but I dug semi-deep for them... It's a great tune too.
I heard "Outta Site" in a Sports Authority and it made me laugh. Wilco is an underrated rock and fucking roll band.

  63. C.... Q....

Acceptable cover of a Dan song. However; some aren't, such as Smashmouth's version of "Do It Again." Someone spray some Gay-Away!

    C.... Q....

Chris Quarles sublimes dr wu horribly

  64. J.... ....

I thought It was awesome. the guys in wilco are a talented bunch

  65. S.... ....

Boy what a lame cover of a great song
