Wilco - Any Major Dude Will Tell You Lyrics

Listening to this SD song today and thought "this sounds like something Wilco would do" and here I am.

In a perfect world, Donald Fagen would do a cover of Wilco's "Impossible Germany."

Always take me back to my first Steely Dan concert in April 1974 at the U. of Toledo, where Donald Fagen generously let 19 year-old percussionist Royce Jones sing lead on this one.

I love Wilco but can’t seem to swallow this cover of my all time fav SD song

Why? It really doesnt diverge too far from the original. They do a very nice job, imho.

Perhaps if they checked the fake book on this one and got the chords right, it could be a go.

A true Dan fan can pick this apart at least they gave it an honest shot

No, it's "Squonk's tears". Per Songfacts, A Squonk is a mythical woodland creature who has the ability to dissolve in its own tears. Steely Dan came across the word in a book by Jorge Luis Borges. Genesis also makes mention of this animal in their song "Squonk," from their 1976 album A Trick of the Tail.

(this is my alternate account) Mike, i KNOW what the actual lyrics are!! OBVIOUSLY! But the guy in this cover song says "Spocks" instead of the correct "Squonk's". If there's anything I will never need schooling on, it's Steely Dan facts as i know them all.

I think Wilco are a very fine band but this really doesn't do them any justice... Steely Dan's version has a lot more feeling than this and that bloody organ is so painfully annoying... Steely Dan are a band that simply are too difficult to copy with any degree of success..

Great song from the Dan + Good cover by Wilco = a pleasant listening experience.

Thanks for this post. I usually hate covers. They nearly always fall a  little short or worse.You don't see many Steely Dan covers because they were THAT good. This is thoughtfully arranged for a bar band ( as opposed to SD who wore out the BEST studio musicians). This is a respectful cover. No It doesn't have quite the soul or grace as Don and Walter but they make it their own. The little Jazz accents are glossed over or adapted to Organ. The guitar player had a very tasty solo, it's a hard space to cover but if it sucked you'd know. The organ really picks up all the stray pieces and makes this work.!

I first heard this cover at a Starbucks. The funny thing was that I was listening to Steely Dan on the way there.

Even though it can touch SD's original version - this has a pseudo Beatlesque spin @ 1:30-35 w/ that clanging "I'm the Walrus vibe', kudos to them, first 'cause they must dig some of Steely Dan's material and secondly, were brave enough to cover it. They pulled it off in their own way.

Not particularly good, they sound crude compared to SD.

jeff got the squonk lyric wrong. its ok i had no idea what a squonk was until i googled it.

the Dan is hard 2 cover, too complex...can you imagine R.E.M. stumbling and mumbling thru this?

It is okay, did not like the substituted vocal parts.... hmm left something to be desired. If I cover a tune, it should sound as good (at least) as the original artist. Wilco ROCKS, don't get me wrong!

@payday0023 when i heard this song for the first time (which was about 10 min ago ... yeah ... i know) i thought it was a grateful dead song. that band could've def pulled this song off in a quality way. i was shocked to find that it was actually done by steely dan. but i saw this youtube post and said what the hell i'll hear the wilco ver too ... and then i read your video description and thought it'd be good to add my .02.

i wish it were possible to hear the grateful dead cover this song!

Its when the demon its at your door.. Hence in the morning "it" wont be there no more. It probably wouldn't bother me as much if it was some no name band at a local bar, but for Wilco to record it like that is a bit disrespectful to Donald.

A tasteful rendition, as always with Wilco. Kinda sounds like they missed a few chord changes in that "when the demons are at your door" part, though. Whateva.

God Street Wine, a NYC band that drew comparisons to SD in the late 80s / early 90s also did a wonderful version of "Any Major Dude" at their reunion show at the Gramercy Theatre July 10th. I believe it was the only time they actually covered SD, though I could be wrong. You can find it on the Internet Music Archives. I suggest checking it out.

Yeah, mostly google images but I dug semi-deep for them... It's a great tune too.
I heard "Outta Site" in a Sports Authority and it made me laugh. Wilco is an underrated rock and fucking roll band.

Acceptable cover of a Dan song. However; some aren't, such as Smashmouth's version of "Do It Again." Someone spray some Gay-Away!
