Who, The - The Quite One Lyrics

Everybody calls me the quiet one
You can see but you can't hear me
Everybody calls me the quiet one
You can try but you can't get near me
I ain't never had the gift of gab
But I can't talk with my eyes
When words fail me you won't nail me
My eyes can tell you lies

Still waters run deep so be careful I don't drown you
You've got nothing to hear I've got nothing to say
Sticks and stones may break your bones
But names can never down you
It only takes two words to blow you away

Everybody calls me the quiet one
But you just don't understand
You can't listen you won't hear me
With your head stuck in the sand
I ain't never had time for words that don't rhyme
My headd is in a cloud
I ain't quiet - everybody else is too loud

Still waters run deep so be careful I don't drown you
You've got nothing to hear I've got nothing to say
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But names can never down you
It only takes two words to blow you away.

Who, The The Quite One Comments
  1. B.... B....

One of my absolute favorite Who songs. It’s hard as hell and the bass is brutal. 👊🏻

  2. M.... S....

I have always said I feel this is possibly the best LIVE Who song besides Young Man Blues. I mean, Won't Get Fooled Again is obviously a better SONG than The Quiet One, but Townshend and John's interaction during the Quiet One solo is awesome.

  3. f.... ....

    That Telecaster!!

  4. F.... O....

    when Daltrey becomes useless

  5. N.... ....

I saw John Entwistle is Boston in the late 80’s when he played a solo gig. I still can’t hear right after all these years! We miss you John!

  6. P.... H....

I just discovered these lyrics after hearing this song for 35 years. Blown away.

PS - NOBODY rocked harder in 1981. Not AC/DC, and not Metallica when they hit the scene a few years later.

  7. T.... H....

The Best Rock and Roll Band on the planet.

  8. P.... F....

The anthem of introverts everywhere. Rock on, John!

    Long Live THE WHO ....

  22. R.... T....

    MY HERO ON BASS!

  23. R.... T....

FUCK WHITE BOYS BUT THIS SHIT IS BAD! PLAY IT!!

  24. m.... ....

Awesome. But why doesn't singer Roger Daltrey take a break off stage for this song?

    m.... ....

Other than supplying backing vocals on the chorus? (On the "Face Dances" album,it's double tracked.)

    m.... ....

Agreed, let John get some glory

    m.... ....

    He's enjoying the ride.

    m.... ....

moonbeamskies I know lol I was giggling the whole time when he was just dancin around. He’s got great moves though.

  25. J.... J....

I never knew Pete and (The Who as a whole) were this tight in the 80s, my favorite period for them still has to be the 60s! They’re still one of my favorite, and in my opinion, one of the best live acts of all time! Long live The Who!

  26. G.... T....

    John kicks ass here!

  27. G.... D....

    always among the top!

  28. D.... C....

God bless, Pete and to think he almost died a year earlier from drugs and alcohol! John always supported Pete and he gave it right back!!

  29. c.... f....

He says he wrote this to give Kenny Jones a showcase, but it sounds to me like Pete's stealing the show here.

  30. m.... ....

Who puts a thumbs down to this video and why?

  31. L.... M....

John says " still waters run deep so be careful I don't drown you." This song was a Punch to gut on the "82" tour. THE WHO.

  32. i.... 0....

The Ox.....when snorting coke off of a tarts bum is not enough

  33. R.... T....

    pete  townsend is the champ

  34. B.... A....

    sensacional

  35. G.... P....

2:05.....Pete has this "Where the fuck did that come from?" look on his face....and in a good way.

    G.... P....

A ton of mutual respect they had for each other..
Brothers in Arms for life and then some...

  36. i.... ....

Bass is a city block long.. Love you Ox, rock on

  37. J.... M....

This is the best song of that show. Pete is engaged, Kenny is playing something that suits him and the Ox is on fire!!! Once John left The Who, they ceased existed being the Who in my opinion.

    J.... M....

    He didn't leave! He died!!

    J.... M....

That was the ONLY way The Ox would've left.

    J.... M....

@Dave C Him dying at 57 means he left. But, he went out on his terms and I am OK with that.

    J.... M....

    @George Price Your right, George.

  38. C.... R....

J Damiano,....thats what mean he was underrated by media, its all talk about The Who, Pete Townsend, who are brilliant, but generally people dont think of how great John Entwistle was, you have got me all wrong J Damiano.

  39. J.... D....

The Ox! The Bruce Lee/Jimi Hendrix of the Bass!

    J.... D....

    +J Damiano why bruce lee

    J.... D....

+pandurate No... I'm saying he's awesome like Lee. Both are the greatest at what they did.

    J.... D....

The ox, the john entwistle of bass.

  40. n.... ....

Great tune. John was an underrated songwriter. Pete gives everything for John's song.

    n.... ....

He always does, even on songs he doesn't really like playing such as Sister Disco and Dreaming from the Waist.

  41. h.... ....

    Schlitz rocks America.

  42. L.... O....

Happy Birthday in Heaven, my dear John. I have faith we will meet again someday. We're not quiet; everybody else is too loud!

  43. C.... R....

................The Ox, thunderfingers, Enwistle brilliant and underated.

    C.... R....

+Chris Robey How was he underrated? He was voted the greatest rock bassist EVER by Guitar Player Magazine i think. He is widely regarding as the best. I love Geddy Lee and Chris Squire, but The Ox would school them. There will never be anyone his equal. I saw this show in Orlando and it was amazing!

  44. n.... ....

Daltrey is utterly worthless when not singing someone else's songs.

    n.... ....

‘he can dance sort of’ lol! I've only seen Roger gyrate and rock back and forth when he isn't singing, even Pete has some questionable dance skills

    n.... ....

Pete always said that Rogers voice was the best instrument for his music.

    n.... ....

-A singer is worthless when is not singing.
    wow a shocking statement.

    n.... ....

Daltrey can play guitar and he's better good on the harmonica too.

    n.... ....

Daltrey has one of the few really good voices in Rock. Most rock singers are average at best. Daltrey is outstanding. Him, Plant, Greg Lake, Freddie Mercury and, yes, Meat Loaf, all have or had very good voices. Most of the rest could be replaced by picking someone random out of the audience.

  45. l.... b....

Despite John being the most calm, he could sometimes be as vicious as his bandmates.

    l.... b....

link biff all those stories of him and Keith smashing up hotel rooms. John did all that stuff too, I love hearing him and his band mates explain how sneaky and crazy he could be.

  46. g.... ....

    Pete kicked ass here!

    g.... ....

    absolutely

    g.... ....

guglielmo64 of course he does !!!
    He is Pete Townsend 🎸

    g.... ....

Kinda looked happy to be there - for once.

  47. d.... ....

virtuoso instrumentals. Nobody played the way those guys did.

  48. T.... A....

    Poor Roger :(

  49. B.... J....

The Who, John Entwistle, Pete Townshend, The Quiet One, Toronto, NY Post, Robert Justich

  50. G.... g....

Kenny looks in pretty good shape.  Keith was like a drowning rat in the late 70's

    G.... g....

Kenny took his drumming seriously his whole time with the who keith had other interests mainly booze!

    G.... g....

themopar426 he had interests. He was really trying to get himself back- his wife leaving, him accidentally killing his chauffeur, and being held to high expectations all day- everyday. He was moon the loon! He had to. Alcoholism isn’t something that you can change in a day, he tried to fix it. In Rogers book, Roger said Keith had taken riding lessons to get in shape- his wife said he was the sweetest man. Sure he was struggling, but don’t we all? He was a great drummer none the less- so was Kenny. But Kenny wasn’t exactly right for The Who. He is still a kickass drummer though!!!!

  51. M.... ....

    go ox go!

  52. f.... ....

Entwistle @ 1:58 just turned it up a few notches and went to a dark place! PT said to himself whoa, wtf -what was that? PT impressed, looks over to him, and in his smile says it all: ur kidding me right?,that was awesome, what r u thinkin, haha?  a sincere smile amongst brothers, and Entwistle caught himself they share the laugh. I loved the way PT coaxes the smile out of JE... brilliant

    f.... ....

@furself1 I can't tell if you're a troll or incredibly stupid and overly defensive. The song was written a year before this concert and as I said, the lyrics are a PLAYFUL jab at the other members of the band. It was a joke that Townshend and Entwhistle were laughing at, nothing dark or anything like that. Now please try to use PROPER English if you plan to respond, k~?

    f.... ....

@DrDizzleFrizzle Playful? please doc don't be thick...JE got intense PT recognized it and once again doc... PT impressed, looks over to him, and in his smile says it all: ur kidding me right? that was AWESOME, what r u thinkin?  a sincere smile amongst brothers, and JE CAUGHT HIMSELF they share the laugh. I loved the way PT coaxes the smile out of JE... brilliant ..I'm done with you quack...cheers

    f.... ....

you can believe what you want, just know that you're wrong, k?

    f.... ....

    Here's my take:
Pete (looking at John): Death Metal again,eh Johnny boy? [sly smile]
John: aw.crap....busted again...[both break out laughing]

    f.... ....

EntwIstle - not EntwHistle. Get it straight, Jackson.

  53. M.... M....

    AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  54. C.... B....

My favorite Entwistle tune (along with, oddly enough, "You"). Watching Kenney Jones in this video reminds me of how outstanding a drummer he was. Was he Keith Moon? Nobody ever pretended that. But he was absolutely great, live or in the studio.

    C.... B....

You're absolutely correct. While a lot of people thought Kenny probably wasn't THE right drummer for The Who,I doubt Keith could've done what Kenny did on this one.

    C.... B....

I don't think there's anything odd that "You" would be a favorite Ox tune; but then, mine is "Trick of the Light".

    C.... B....

Captain Bud Sturguess I’d love to hear Bozzio’s take on The Who catalogue.

    C.... B....

Kenney suited the music on Face Dances. It's just hard to imagine Keith playing to You Better You Bet and Another Tricky Day.

  55. C.... ....

    LOL well spotted man !

  56. d.... ....

At 2:03 John ran out of steam in his vocal volume and kind of squeaked out "..everybody else is too loud" after he just screamed .."I ain't quiet!".
I believe Townshend thought that to be funny, which it was, especially when both of their eyes meet!

    d.... ....

I always thought it was John's "Here's proof I ain't no Metal God" moment myself.

  57. K.... Y....

Indeed! This "Farewell Tour" show in Toronto has so many great moments. So glad they stuck around another 30 years.

  58. p.... g....

    Ah! From the "last" concert.

  59. p.... g....

Nicely said. He is one of the more exciting players to watch. Keith Moon as well. I can sit down to a Who record and just focus on the drumming and be thrilled. Jeff Beck is also a very exciting player to listen to, not so much to watch.

  60. G.... g....

My guess, it's a joke between the two of them. John sings "be careful I dont drown you!" And Pete Sings "I wanna drown in your sweet sweet love" In the song drowned.

  61. c.... ....

Funny, I never thought about that line in the context of the band itself. I thought it was just about other people talking too much, not him talking too little - which of course is also what he meant.

    Thanks for that one.

  62. J.... B....

It's because of the line" I aint Quiet, everybody else is too loud" Everybody in the band was constantly trying to outdo each other volume wise. He was laughing, look at Entwhistle laugh back right after. That line is one of the greatest lines describing the band ever.

    J.... B....

BY FAR John was the loudest one onstage, and it's never talked about. Nobody wants to go near his bass rig...

  63. c.... ....

Yep, Pete uses chord voicings that Joe Perry has never heard of. Playing an exciting solo is about a lot more than how quickly you wiggle your fingers.

It's like saying that the guy who can pound the hardest and fastest is the world's best fuck.

  64. c.... ....

A bunch of us went to see The Who in Buffalo on the same tour (opening show of the tour, I think, with The Clash as the warm-up band!!)... We had hash brownies but started to chicken out as we neared the border. Everyone ate one and we had three left, so one of the girls with us, not wanting to waste any, ate them. By the second number she was on the tarpaulin and missed the whole show. She was very cute, and we had to encircle her to keep her safe, and even then, the vultures were circling.

  65. s.... h....

i was at the pink floyd toronto xibition stadium sept. '87 shows on acid. i had a sheet of white blodder,I wrote phone #s on it n put it in my wallet. the customs agent looked right at it ,n let us right across the border! good ol' days.

  66. N.... F....

You can tell much less cocaine was used in the production of this compared to Rockaplast

  67. W.... ....

My air guitar is still pretty good, too - better than my actually guitar playing! When I've tried doing the windmill on my actual guitar, I drew blood... Leave the windmills to "the professional" - unless their air windmills!

    W.... ....

Try hitting by the neck/body joint, extend the fingers and let the pick absorb the impact.

  68. d.... ....

Ditto, except my copy was on Betamax! I can still do a pretty mean air guitar to this one!

  69. W.... ....

Freekin' love this! Townshend is truly on fire here. I used to have this on VHS (Who Rocks America) and I'd watch this particular performance as a teenager 10 times a day! Long Live the Who!!

  70. A.... H....

Hey, show a little respect - Roger is a master

  71. c.... ....

Actually, his dancing style hadn't changed much since the 60s... unlike Mick Jagger, who struggled to stay on top of the "relevant" trends in such things, Roger pretty much stuck with his "manly but sensitive" physical stance.

  72. c.... ....

...and then john glanced back and then they looked at each other longer - there was some shared joke there... but for the life of me I can't hear anything that may have brought it on... I was at that show, as it happens... two nights in a row and I went to both - i think it was the other night that I was on acid.

  73. S.... J....

Maybe Entwistle really getting into the line right before, kind of got intense with it, looked like Pete was humored by it and then looked at John like "WTF?!" haha. I dunno, just an observation

    S.... J....

@Erik - It was nothing more than Pete momentarily got lost on guitar.....

  74. M.... H....

    i love this....

  75. c.... ....

You say that as if 80s style wasn't a huge embarrassment to humanity.

  76. c.... ....

What was Townshend looking askance about at 2:05? I can't hear a mistake in there. That doesn't mean Pete didn't, of course.

  77. d.... ....

The true genius and talent of Townshend starts at 2:29. I used to air guitar this exact performance because it was perfect and he is doing what he does to perfection. I read once that Joe Perry of Aerosmith said that "..Townshend is just pissed off because he can't play lead better than some guys..." Fuck you Joe Perry, you can't touch this.

    d.... ....

Yeah and Joe is just mad because Ed VH came along in 1978 and made him look like an amateur. Townshend rules.

    d.... ....

Joe said he hated EVH as well. He was probably stoned out of his mind when he said all those things. Pete got better and better as a lead player as time wore on.

  78. a.... m....

October 9, 1982 CNE Stadium I remember before the show an airplane flying over the stadium pulling an advertisement stating: "Happy Birthday John Entwhistle..."

  79. m.... ....

i still watch this...and i was at this show

  80. S.... K....

2.09 - 2.12 The look and laughter between Entwhistle and Townshend is beautiful

  81. h.... ....

pete looks much younger in this than he did in the early days of the who.

  82. m.... ....

Pete in the ZONE. Stunning!! Power and VOLUME!!!!

  83. a.... r....

mostly schecter tele's or roger giffen's version of the same guitar

  84. M.... ....

    Roger Daltrey looks so 80´s...awesome!!

  85. b.... ....

still my fav who show, played my cassette so many times it barely plays, still have it 30 years later! long live the horrible who.

  86. T.... G....

    nice job kenney jones !

  87. c.... f....

What guitar is Pete playing on the 82 tour?

    c.... f....

    telecaster usually played stratocaster

  88. M.... V....

    lol @ roger daltrey dancing
    Oh the 80s...

  89. i.... ....

    Nice eye makeup pete. haha

  90. i.... ....

Vintage. Scary Vintage. He Aint quiet, ev'ry body else IS TOO LOUD!!

  91. c.... f....

Keith Moon was God .Thats why Jones looks so simple ..He is actually a great drummer

  92. E.... G....

1:20 - what makes pete the incredibly enjoyable, fantastic and creative guitarist he is.

  93. A.... B....

    That was amazing.

  94. d.... ....

Look at Pete! So into Entwistle's music! Pete always had to work hard to keep up with his harder style of writing.

  95. M.... L....

gotta give some props to kenney here, definitely a challenging drum part, especially to play without rushing

  96. D.... ....

Best song the Post Moon Who ever did... This is a brutal song and great performance.

  97. b.... ....

What a great smash mouth performance!

  98. M.... B....

I saw them in Worcester Mass, just before or after this show. These guys were so good it was ridiculous. Best live band ever.
