Who, The - Melancholia Lyrics

My coffee's cold, my paper's old,
My heart is sold to melancholia,
My clothes are torn, my shoes are worn,
My heart is born to melancholia.

A strange surprise, what I despise in other guys is here in me,
They lose their girl, they lose their world,
And then they cry for all to see,
I've never felt so bad, the fires drive me mad.

The sheets are gray, left since the day she went away, I lost all power,
The dust is thick, the dog is sick, the kids have picked most of the flowers.

The sun is shining, but not for me,
The sun is shining, but not for me.
I've never felt so bad, the fires drive me mad.

The sheets are gray, left since the day she went away, I lost all power,
The dog is sick, the dust is thick, the kids have picked most of the flowers.

Who, The Melancholia Comments
  1. L.... C....

This song belongs to a never released LP The Who recorded in 1968, after Sell Out LP. They had enough songs forna double album that sadly was shelved. Songs recorded for the album were, among others: Magic Bus, Faith in Something Bigger, Dogs, Dr. jekyl & Mr. Hide, Glow Girl and many others.

  2. A.... D....

the only track which can compete "I can see for miles"

  3. S.... M....

What a wonderful song which somehow escaped almost everyones radar including mine, a complex & very sophisticated song with a raging guitar solo that is years ahead of its time & is an absolute joy to find & listen to.

  4. V.... J....

Sadly,...this CD circulating on Earth. Of this song,..and other who gems,..may be the only copies as Umg,..burned the masters of all things Who,...

  5. L.... L....

This would've been a killer addition to Live at Leeds, all it would need to sound "live" is to mix in some crowd noise. Too bad they never performed it live. It is far too dark for The Who Sell Out, which is full of romantic nostalgia. My hunch is that it so overpowered the pop-opera Tommy that The Who had no choice but to bury it.

  6. P.... M....

    The Damned in the 60?

  7. C.... M....

When you're so good this is like your 73rd best song.

  8. D.... V....

2:40.... Acid Rock, Proto Heavy Metal.

    D.... V....

    shut up you moron

  9. P.... S....

The Who's greatest song,..'was never released until 12 years after 1982,..????,.,almost like as if baba o Reilly was never released,... This song would have changed history in 1968,..!!!!! Everything would be different today,..zep 1 and 2 would be altered,..bowie,..might be different,..etc,..etc,..the Beatles may have had to stick around just a lil,..longer,..to compete with this,..the turtles,..might not have stopped,..this song showed the way,..the future,...for better,worse,..or,..???

    P.... S....

    A little overdramatic.

  10. P.... E....

Alguem ouvindo pela enésima vez? Kklkklkk

  11. F.... ....

No idea why they chunked this. Maybe, the record execs canned it. Anyway, glad to hear it for the first time.

  12. M.... C....

Amazing music. Always loved the popular music sound combined with Pete’s guitar, Rogers’s vocals, Keith’s insane drumming & Enthwistle’s unique bass lines.😃👌👊

The sheets are gray, left since the day she went away, I lost all power

  14. S.... H....

Amazing Song with the amazing drumming of Keith Moon !!

  15. J.... Q....

HAD THEY DONE THE RIGHT THING AND RELEASED THIS AMAZING SONG; ALL ROCK WOULD HAVE BEEN ALTERED FOREVER; FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE; THIS WASN'T MEANT TO BE,..BUT FUNNY ,..HOW ITS BECOME A WHO SONG 'FOR A NEW GENERATION TODAY " !!!! Amazing how the who works out anyway !!

  16. A.... B....

    Dayum! Perfect song!

  17. s.... a....

how is it possible that two people don't like this? one of the best tunes they ever made!

  18. K.... 1....

I cannot stop listening to this. Someone needs to pry me out of my chair.

  19. C.... ....

The Who is the 1st Prog Band

  20. F.... J....

The songs that were out of Who Sell Out plus some singles like "Call me Lightining" and "Dogs" would have made a terrific LP. The same with "Lifehouse" and singles "Relay" , "Join together" and "Let's see action" in 1972. They could have made an even greater discography.

  21. E.... S....

Scoop version is better. Also, Scoop's version of 'Behind Blue Eyes' is a great alternative version to the version on Who's Next. Scoop is a great album, as is The Who Sell Out.

  22. b.... ....

Stunning! More proof The Who was leaving better stuff in the can than most bands ever released in their entire careers.

  23. R.... C....

How in the hell is this an outtake? Not even that, how was this not released for so many years? At least a b-side would've done it well! I love the whole album, but this is most definitely better than Silas Stingy or some other filler tracks.

    R.... C....

Really. Not to mention having put out stop-gap albums between Sell Out and Tommy on both sides of the pond (Magic Bus in the US and Direct Hits in the UK) that had songs that were also on the previous albums.

Though I expect they included Silas Stingy to get another Ox tune on the album, from which he could get royalties.

    R.... C....

Silas stingy is an original Entwistle master piece, not a filler!

  24. R.... C....

    I've never felt so bad,
    The virus drives me mad

    R.... C....

    @Manfred Williams No.

    R.... C....

    Manfred Williams Definitely not

  25. a.... ....

Lyrics sound like comedy and music is from heaven.

  26. D.... R....

    Superlative Who!

  27. M.... A....

on top of everything else ... did The Who invent prog rock way back in the late-mid 60s too??

    M.... A....

    M. Asher Yes.. The Who is Prog

    M.... A....

Actually, RAEL1 on this album is VERY similar to Genesis' "Watcher of the Skies" and they also used the name Rael as the guy in "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" so - very likely!

    M.... A....

Quite something to be forerunners of the seemingly very opposed (yet not really) genres of punk rock and prog.

  28. H.... F....

    Ladies and gentlemen......The Who

    H.... F....

I think we have established that.☺

  29. j.... ....

    Thanks!

  30. G.... H....

the kids have picked most of the flowers.........

    G.... H....

Love that line. And "The dust is thick, the dog is sick". Leave it to The 'Oo to take the piss out of doom and gloom before it even became all that fashionable.

  31. J.... W....

    Awesome song!

  32. H.... F....

    MOONIE! Tremendous fills. Great tune.

    H.... F....

Yeah, I love the dynamics of his fills, which so often increase in volume during the rolls to give the music more power and passion, and his sharp punctuation. Bad ass stuff!

  33. S.... G....

    This is a fu(@& gr8 song!

  34. G.... ....

When a band throws away songs like this, it makes you wonder what other gems may have been lost completely. This is a great song, and would have been great live!

  35. T.... R....

Can't get enough. Even the backing vocals are a work of art.

    T.... R....

An absolute tour de force in every way. Pure musical genius, heart, and soul. Well beyond me how this was left unreleased.

  36. N.... S....

One of my faves. I first heard this on Townshend's "Scoop" sometime in the 80's. I much prefer that version. It is on YT, labelled "melancholia DEMO." Townshend does a much better job singing this than Daltrey, it's just not Daltrey's style at all. Much too subtle.

    N.... S....

I think they are both dope!

    N.... S....

^ Damn right. Roger can do subtle as good as anyone when the song's right, e.g. See Me Feel Me, Behind Blue Eyes.

  37. L.... P....

What do they say just in the end, someone, please...?

    L.... P....

    @***** Hey, thanks!

    L.... P....

Loon at the Bag Of Nails...ah! El Bag O'Nails era un famoso club londinense donde se lo pasaban pipa los Who, Beatles, etc. Saludos!

    L.... P....

"Loon at the Bag of Nails": An unused ad for a pub that was a fave hangout of Moonie and The Ox, among many other 60s musicians ("The Bag of Nails")

  38. K.... K....

Can't believe they didn't release this then. It's not darker than Paint It Black, though it is more sophisticated musically. Raging solo!

  39. R.... S....

I understand why they didn't release this back in '67. If you've listened to The Who Sell Out in its entirety, you could note that the flow is fantastic if not perfect. They likely were pressured by some outside force to keep the album short. This, or more likely, Townshend-I say Townshend because he wrote the majority of the album-saw no way for the track to fit in well with the others, and if you listen to the album up until Rael 1 Melancholia sounds so foreign. Nonetheless a beast of a track.

    R.... S....

This song wasn't recorded until mid-1968.

  40. 7.... ....

How in the hell did the Who not release this one back in the day in 68' ?? And then ,..even worse,..they forgot about this track ,...and it was never released until like 1994 ??? Rock n roll's all time biggest blunder because everyone now knows this is one of the Who's Greatest songs - if not the absolute best ,...this thing would have changed history in 68' ,...ALL bands would have been different ,..after this ,...Awesome drums from Keith here too ,...and no one ever heard it ??

    7.... ....

Loon at the bag of nails

  41. B.... ....

Jesus f*cking christ! This song is really my new favourite song. The emotion and identification Daltrey sings in is just perfect!

  42. H.... ....

That solo is unbelievable, and John's sharp heavy bass and Keith's banging drums only add more to this gem. Amazing!

  43. A.... S....

Randall Monroe would blow his brains out from hearing this song, thus, it was never released to many people, my copy of this lp has it.

  44. s.... ....

in a way this is like a blues song...meaning that its about being bummed out

  45. s.... ....

The cd has some very cool Pete guitar stuff.... really wild ..like psychedelic guitar.....it shows hes awesome and not just rythm-wise

  46. b.... ....

Great song. I doubt that they ever played it live, though.

  47. a.... ....

@robin14669 The Who have a 25 best songs ! That is the number. I know !

  48. B.... S....

@Luxmaxnike It is a perfect album, but I meant even more perfect!! haha

  49. L.... ....

@Tortidis987 but it is perfect. although i like it (and glitering girl) more than Silas Stingy, Relax and Medac.

  50. B.... S....

Is it weird that this is one of my favorite Who songs? If this made it on to the original Who Sell Out, the album would have been perfect!!

  51. b.... ....

Can you imagine anyone coming up with a gem like this today? And then discarding it !!!

  52. G.... P....

    classic who by far!!

  53. M.... K....

@robin14669 I think its because they didnt believe people were ready for such futuristic music :)

  54. s.... ....

@robin14669 A pure masterpiece worth the wait.

  55. s.... ....

@MrGb1965 My guess is that the sound was over 30 years ahead of it's time. Fantastic tune.

  56. M.... ....

Why it took so long ("30 Years..." 1994) to release this baffles me.
