Who, The - I Don't Wanna Get Wise Lyrics

He was drunk, I was blind
Though we tried to be kind
I was sunk, always late
We were quick to rotate

Let's be blunt, I was a bluff
And the surreal life was tough
I was a runt, we told lies
But to our great surprise

All the shit that we did
Brought us some money, I guess
And those snotty young kids
Were a standing success

Helped us conquer and rise
And we learned in this hell

We don't wanna get wise
(I don't wanna get wise
I don't wanna get wise)
Life teaches us well

We still pull, we get smug
And we all like a drug
Over full, always sated
Puffed up, elated

Let's admit our mistakes
Are what triggered our breaks
We were shits, oh, no disguise
And it is no surprise

That the crap that we did
Brought us money, God bless
And those snotty young kids
Were a standing success

Helped us conquer and rise
And we learned in this hell

We didn't wanna get wise
(I don't wanna get wise
I don't wanna get wise)
Life teaches us well

Experiment, you universe
We'll ask why you choose to curse
Why set a fire you plan to douse?
Why set a rat to catch a mouse?

He was drunk (he was drunk), I was blind (he was blind)
Though we tried to be kind
I was sunk (he was sunk), he was late (always late)
We were quick to rotate

We tried hard to stay young
But the high notes were sung
We've been scarred, we've been prized
But you could see in our eyes

(I don't wanna get wise
I don't wanna get wise)
We got wise!

(I don't wanna get wise
I don't wanna get wise)
We got wise
(I don't wanna get wise
I don't wanna get wise)
We got wise
(I don't wanna get wise
I don't wanna get wise)
We got wise

  1. J.... ....

Hope I die before I get wise?

  2. C.... M....

Love the line "..those s-s-snotty young kids..."
Thank you, wise old men, for your valuable observations.

  3. M.... R....

I haven't been this excited about a new album since AC/DC's Rock or Bust. What a great album, keep rockin Pete and Roger!!

  4. m.... ....

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️🎸

  5. N.... N....

Life-long Who fan here. Most bands start off better and end up worse as they age. Not the Who. They're like a fine wine- only get better!

  6. f.... ....

Thats a stolen phrase from HENRY MILLER who when old in the seventies said in an interview PEOPLE SEE ME AS SOME SORT OF WISE MAN, I DONT WANNA BE WISE, AS THAT HAS SOMETHING OF BEING FINISHED ABOUT IT, I WANT TO KEEP MAKING MISTAKES AND CRAZY EXPLORATIONS TILL THE END. thats what an American writer said, and the English only steal from Americans.

  7. Z.... W....

We love rock legend Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey....The Who Rocks ! 🇬🇧🇬🇧

  8. S.... E....

Roger's volcals are clean and strong. Best he has sound in 10 years .

  9. N.... D....

Roger sounds old ....passed it ....retirement time guys

  10. M.... ....

É uma pena não ter uma sonoridade maior na guitarra

  11. B.... J....

Ok I've downloaded this album, it really is awesome, and like I stated earlier, I have indeed listened the shyt out of it! Beads on a string, Hero Ground Zero and then Street song all in a row....mind blown, as great as it ever was. My wife who likes the Greatful Dead and that kind of music usually, thinks it's fantastic as well. This really is a gift to Who fans like me so thank you thank you thank you to Roger & Pete! The drumming is really great on this album as well.

  12. D.... D....

    Gracias Por Su Música 🇲🇽

  13. D.... S....

    Long Live Rock!!!!!

  14. H.... S....

I am really liking what I am hearing!

  15. R.... B....

Love this! Very “The Who” :) once more into the breach! ...I always considered The Who to be maybe not quite “punk” but definitely the first pre-punk band that inspired Iggy Pop and Ramones possibly. They are punk to me.

  16. C.... R....

I could swear I sense "auto-tune" on Roger's voice. Excuse me while I go kill myself...

    C.... R....

    No way!

  17. M.... ....

damn my dad would of love this album

  18. C.... G....

This and the other two tracks I've heard are good. But even though Pete may like playing in a band with a more traditional rhythm section, the Ox and Moonie were, IMO, what caused their music to be ballsy. Without them it falls more on the artsy side, like Endless Wire (although this does sound better so far). A song like Ball and Chain should be angrier and more of a stomper.

  19. C.... B....

Favorite track on the new album. It took a few listens to get to number 1.

  20. S.... C....

    Fuck. They sound amazing.
    It’s 2019, right?

  21. R.... P....

I'm sure it's the best tune from the new album and then I hear the next one and the one after it and so on. Masterpiece

  22. E.... B....

I haven't been this excited about music since Bowie's Blackstar.

    E.... B....

Eldon B that was a masterpiece!

    E.... B....

    @no1nestandsalone Agreed.

    E.... B....

    How is Blackstar ??
    Is it good ?
    Should I get it ?

    E.... B....

@Eric Peacock Well it's been out now for three years lol Check out the videos for it.

  23. N.... S....

Sounds a little like Daily Records from Face Dances...

  24. D.... L....

Oh, hell, WOW. I've listened to you for miles and miles and miles. Rock the fuck on, The Who!

  25. S.... E....

An astonishing who album of substance ❤

  26. E.... P....

Roger, as usual, sounds great. The music is alive & bristling. Zack's drumming sounds pedestrian and mediocre. Where's that monster bass ( guitar ). The drumming ( on this track ) has a Peter Criss esque banging quality to it.

    E.... P....

Carla Azar from Jack White’s band - with Zach, especially live, will have more Moon-like drive.

  27. C.... J....

I grew up on 60s British Invasion. 2019 And still invading lol

  28. I.... R....

  29. A.... Z....

Hope they died before they got old. And they are still resisting. They still don't wanna get wanna get wise! Love it!

  30. j.... t....

    ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

  31. J.... K....

Anyone here 30 years old? Anyone remember their pawpaw playing the whos songs in the jeep Cherokee and the smell of good coffee at 5 am, while heading towards an adventure? I keep my grandparents alive with this music. My grandmother was rocking out to this stuff in Cairo, Egypt, and my grandfather in WALES. It all finds a way to find you and haunt you of the better times. Hold on while you can :) dont be a story someone's telling, be a story everyone is writing. I love you

  32. T.... ....

I feel like I just stepped into a time machine, found some unreleased Who from 1969 and just brought it into the future.

  33. A.... 0....

    beautiful song 😭

  34. L.... O....

I have the album. The drums suck, the production isn't very good, and neither are the songs. Roger sounds pretty damn good for being 75 and previously have cancer.

    L.... O....

    wrong wrong wrong, sorry man.

    L.... O....

@Giuseppe S I'm right. You must have missed The Who in the 70s.

  35. S.... 7....

I love the who, always will

  36. R.... M....

Pete and Roger fucking rock. Miss hearing the orchestra and sound of thundering from Keith and John. RIP MOON THE LOON AND JOHN "THE OX" ENTWISTLE

  37. v.... ....

As a 17 year old I'm beyond glad these guys keep putting out good ones :)

  38. P.... P....

Actually The Who Are You album they released in 1978 was a double album but they had kept sides C and D hidden until today, don't you think so ?

  39. M.... F....

Fifty years later. Keep her going lads

  40. r.... l....

I was very doubtful when I heard "Best album since Quadrophenia"... well, now that I've heard 3 tracks, I'm less. Welcome back guys

  41. D.... P....

All the new songs have been fantastic. Chock Full Of Hooks! How can this happen? Old rockers manage to find new inspiration? Unheard of! Yet, somehow, they seem to be pulling it off. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the rest of the songs are of equal quality. And maybe, just maybe, a few even rise above them all to truly shock us. 🤞

  42. S.... A....

    RELEASE MORE TRACKS PLEASE!

  43. J.... H....

The Stones can stick with the world THE WHO IS THE UNIVERSES GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL BAND !

  44. B.... ....

Another good new one. Touching lyrics as well.

  45. J.... L....

Three for three so far. Feel like I'm back in the early 70's. I mean, seriously, this is Who's Next quality! The sound, the songs, the vocals...man, I don't know how they pulled this off, but if it's their swan song, what a way to go out!

    J.... L....

Jupiter Le Grand Well said. How often do we get this excited when a “legacy” act releases new stuff?

  46. G.... F....

    They are still relevant .

  47. T.... B....

You can tell Townshend is trying here, and I love that about him - he's 74 and still having a go.
But The Who is not The Who without Entwistle and Moon. They were, and are, the most recognisable rhythm section in rock.
Pete Townshend cannot write classics anymore and he's in an act that should be called Townshend and Daltrey. I repeat - those two are not The Who. What Townshend said about the two deceased members the other day (Nov. 2019) was fucking strange, to say the least.

  48. S.... K....

I barely ever like songs the first time I hear them but this one's good already!

  49. R.... W....

    A very good song
I am looking forward to the new album

  50. A.... H....

    The Who’s Swan Song...

  51. T.... S....

    They still got it!

  52. J.... C....

I was lucky got to see The Who do qudrophenea they had a big screen playing the movie and The Who we’re playing to it

  53. G.... G....

It's amazing song... thanks Roger and Pete...

  54. o.... ....

Man these 70 somethings are really raising the bar. I'm telling you this is going to be their best album since By The Numbers I can just feel it.

  55. l.... d....

Roger, Pete and band - fine song. Came on board in 75 when your music started making sense to me

  56. 5.... ....

    I like this tune

  57. J.... C....

sounds great ! I'm getting te new album!!

  58. r.... ....

I can't wait to listen to your new album. When do you come to Germany and play the new songs??

  59. G.... C....

Roger Daltrey truly is kicking ass with this song's vocals

  60. O.... H....

    WE ARE THE MODS!

  61. B.... ....

Really looking forward to getting my mitts on this album.

  62. D.... M....

Saw them first in 1966 at the Leeds Corn Exchange and couldn’t believe what I was hearing and seeing. I was also at the classic “Live at Leeds” concert in 1970 when they recorded their live album. They played everything from early blues to “modern” rock opera: unforgettable music.
Being a Who fan for 50 years has been a privilege.

  63. J.... M....

Still no substitute. Band number 1

  64. C.... ....

The Who is back! The Greatest band of all Time.

  65. T.... M....

This is insane how they go from Endless Wire to this awesome zeitgeist from 1977!

  66. r.... ....

It says "'I Don't Wanna Get Wise' from The Who's new studio album WHO, released on 6 December 2019."

Today we are 8 daze away from the 6th of December, 2019.

I wanna smoke what this person has. LOL.

  67. F.... ....

    A below average Who song.

  68. W.... H....

All three songs that have been released so far are great! Can't wait to hear the album!

  69. H.... T....

I'm neutral towards the song. It's okay.... doesn't deserve a thumbs up or down. I'll probably listen to it one or two more times than forget it ever exists.

  70. B.... J....

Man, I'm gonna listen the shyt out of this album next week bigtime.

  71. L.... ....

Too wordy. The backing vocals sound awful. The mix doesn't make any sense. But WHO cares about my opinion, right? Rock on Pete!

  72. M.... T....

The intro reminds me a lot "Rockmaker" by TOTO.

  73. L.... A....

Great! Thanks pete! Love u so much! N john 2! Miss him so! U both inspired me to jam!🎶🎵🎸🎼〽👨

  74. B.... W....

They were great in there heyday. Not anymore.

  75. R.... C....

Very nice. Gets better with each time I listen. Nice retro Who feel.

  76. j.... h....

    Auto tune!

  77. A.... S....

    Roger sounds great here.

  78. 3.... M....

    Muito bom!!!

  79. J.... F....

12,000 views c'mon people get a clue, it should be 12,000,000

  80. J.... F....

    Stellar mix

  81. P.... N....

    Whos back

  82. J.... T....

Yay! Sounds like the Who did it again! Saw them this year. They were great!

  83. R.... ....

    FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  84. P.... ....

    Pleasantly surprised!!!!!

  85. M.... E....

    Thanks fellas.

  86. A.... P....

I love everything but that modified clap track like thing in the beginning.

  87. P.... S....

Sounds calm, the bass is completely hidden in the mix. The Ox is sighing, "Arghhh!"
Like the Who's last post-Entwhistle album, this will have some great rockers that could've used the Ox's help.
Glad to hear Pete and Roger are still up for it!

    P.... S....

    try it with headphones...its thumping

  88. b.... ....

    very good!

  89. D.... B....

Pete doing Pete (sounds, chord progression, riffs, melodies) and Roger doing Roger with that powerful voice of his and both in their seventies! I've been a fan since 1969 and it feels so good to hear new songs from my favourite British band. Like Kevy, I miss the other two but we're blessed to get a chance to hear these new songs.
    Don't miss them live!

    D.... B....

I'm so happy long time Who fans like this new stuff too!

  90. m.... f....

I like this new stuff but it wouldn't have made the cut in the who's heyday, wgfa it's not, but its absolutely amazing Pete can still write decent song with alarming regularity

    m.... f....

Pete was 20/ 30 something in their " Heyday" . Now he writes from an older perspective . He s an honest writer + speaker. I be been a fan since 1966. I think they still do good , honest work. Best Wishes to all.

    m.... f....

I think Simon Townshend wrote this one

    m.... f....

Sue DeSimone The credits in Apple Music give the credit to Pete.

  91. A.... K....

I whink they are the music daddies today

  92. B.... C....

I don't really care for this one but past history indicates I'll probably love it in 15 years.

  93. m.... ....

Album will be under the tree on the 25th

  94. H.... N....

Sounds like it could have been on the “Face Dances” album.

    H.... N....

    That's not a compliment.

    H.... N....

Flike Depends...I personally like Face Dances (Another Tricky Day is a great Who song). It’s has its charms.

    H.... N....

High Number me too, I love it

  95. B.... M....

I was 15 when the Who brought their first single out ‘I can’t explain’ in 1965. I have seen them live numerous times over the years and they have always been one of the greatest live bands ever. Still great to see them still performing and make new music. I came from a fortunate generation which has been littered with talented musicians.

    B.... M....

I think the baby talked good.

    B.... M....

AND which OBLITERATED the immensely talented young generation by fucking them over in record companies run by baby boomers, ENVIOUS of any young and more talented person than these failed WANNA be hendrixes in cheap suits who ran into war along Clinton, Blair and Bush first thing they could.

  96. R.... B....

Sounds like they are imitating Styx.

  97. r.... ....

    Absolutely Fantastic!!!! 😊👍👍🍻

  98. M.... ....

    Roger sounds damn good :-)!!!
