Who, The - Fiddle About Lyrics

[Uncle Ernie:]

I'm your wicked Uncle Ernie
I'm glad you won't see or hear me
As I fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about !

Your mother left me here to mind you
Now I'm doing what I want to
Fiddling about
Fiddling about
Fiddle about!

Down with the bedclothes
Up with the nightshirt!
Fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about !

You won't shout as I fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about !
Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle.

This song should have been called Diddle About.

    I.... N....

Maybe that word wasn't yet in use in that way in the UK in the 60's when this song was written. Some words change, or go in and out of style. The newest word in English is "Yeet", for "throw", I hear it ALL THE TIME now.

@JonBenait06 So you're saying the sexual abuse was justified because of Jessa's appeal? Or that you'll do the same to her having the chance?

If none of those is true i suggest you think better before commenting in the future, since that is what you're conveying.

  32. E.... E....

Christ, wtf happened to Townshend as a kid?

    E.... E....

He had to stay with his grandmother several months and she was whacked out and brought strange men home often.

    E.... E....

@No8549 Although Entwistle wrote the song, I believe Townshend asked him too (his idea) and the reason Pete didn't want to write it was because of his childhood

    E.... E....

the song was entwisle's idea he wrote it, ask what happened with him

    E.... E....

Townsend, along with many British children who were evacuated from London during WW II, was sent to live with his grandmother, where he was abused. While writing Tommy, he wanted child abuse to be an important theme in the story, but because of his painful childhood experiences, he couldn’t bring himself to writing the songs on that topic, so he asked Entwistle to do it. Entwistle, like many of his generation, was probably aware of the abuse that went on during that time. Look up Operation Pied Piper.

    E.... E....

THE REAL ANSWER: HIS FATHER WAS A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN AND COMPOSER.

  33. N.... ....

how is this song allowed? lol

    N.... ....

+NovaTime This song is a part of an opera. A rock opera by the Who. As with all operas it is a story and this song tells the part of the story about the sexual abuse of the story's star, Tommy.

If you start the album from the beginning and listen to the words you will understand how this song fits into the story.

    N.... ....

+charles brown "allowed" because if you take it in context, it does NOT endorse sexual abuse. It's a dramatic monologue, like Robert Browning wrote. Browning's most famous poem is about an elderly 17th century duke who "buys" a teenage bride, then has her killed because he suspects she might be more attracted to men her own age (duh). The poem is spoken by the "duke" character. Does this mean Browning endorsed taking and killing teenage brides? Nooooo. Neither does this song endorse or even tolerate child sexual abuse.

    N.... ....

    Wahhhhh
    Let's ban everything

    N.... ....

I saw a film about Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Can't believe they allowed it.

    N.... ....

    @Novatime96
    Really, how?
The film was about a man (and people)  who inflicted horrible suffering on millions of people whereas the song is about a man who inflicted suffering on one or possibly a few. Anyone who thinks the song should be banned logically would want thousands of films banned too.

  34. V.... N....

    Jerry Sandusky's theme song.

  35. 1.... ....

    good guy uploader:)

  36. F.... ....

Im replying to your reply to his comment so everybody will see your reply to the comment. Despite the fact that this is pointless

  37. T.... T....

No it isn't a lie you idiot. Learn some history on The Who and mainly Pete before you open your mouth. Pete has stated what I said many times. Fool.

  38. T.... T....

Pete had the idea of this but couldn't write it because he had this happen to him as a child at his grandmothers with a family "friend", so he let John write it and sing it and few other lines in songs about it. I think out of all the bootlegs and official releases I have only seen Pete once maybe sing a word in the chorus.

  39. d.... ....

A friend of mine had problems similar to this in her past. This song always makes me think of that, and it honestly just fills me with so much sympathy for Tommy. I mean, props The Who, it's tough to make fictional characters one really cares about.

  40. c.... b....

I LOVE this song! I love John's vocal! Very nasty!

    c.... b....

    That isn't John singing.

    c.... b....

  45. f.... ....

Tommy's parents were idiots. At least, his Mother was. I think she's too immature, personally. Tommy's dad has always seemed like a very good man to me.

    but it so damn catchy

  53. A.... ....

i'm repling to your comment so everybody will see it 8)

    A.... ....

are there new words for the song?

  54. N.... ....

Uncle Ernie, please go visit a boy called Justin Bieber. He's just waiting for you.

    N.... ....

    And Jacob Satutors

    N.... ....

i'm just going to assume that you two were both very young when you wrote these comments and that y'all didn't actually know what this song was about :))

  55. s.... ....

@8StringBuzzard yeah, I heard Pete didn't want to write a song like this he said, so he had John write this one (and Cousin Kevin)

  56. I.... S....

@spudmuffin99 Well that is true but John Entwistle Wrote this song

  57. s.... ....

Pete said that Tommy was about his childhood... Soooo.... Pete was molested?

  58. G.... S....

@Totenkopfstandarte1 You can't blame an entire team for what their coach did. They probably didn't even have any idea.

  59. D.... ....

@Seltaeb9091 that comment just made my year

  60. d.... ....

When i first heard I was just like "Oh please tell me he's talking about playing the violin." lol

  61. c.... b....

This sounds so sinister! I like it.

  62. a.... ....

@ClassicRockSovereign I guess they thought that he was a real fun guy. lol

  63. S.... H....

    great song

  64. a.... ....

    @ThroughRock
Is the term "kiddle fiddler" pro- or anti-paedophile?

  65. T.... J....

@spudmuffin99 and he was deaf, dumb, and blind

  66. s.... ....

So... Tommy's parents were murderers, his uncle was a child molester, and his cousin was a bully. Jesus this guy was unlucky...

    s.... ....

...and his parents sent him to a Gypsy that molested him on drugs.

    s.... ....

    @MrParkerman6 Don't be such a nay-sayer.

  67. B.... ....

@MallRat666 This song is about child molestation but it is because this song was to explain what was happening they released this album as a storyline. This scene is basically what Uncle Ernie was doing to his nephew Tommy the main character in this album.

  68. M.... A....

@ThroughRock Well it doesn't at all. Do any of these lyrics sound possitive? "I'm your wicked Uncle Ernie" Believe me, it's anti-pedophile.

  69. M.... A....

@ThroughRock You think this song promotes child abuse?

  70. a.... ....

@pumkinbreath seems they had a knack more for children.

  71. S.... ....

@ClassicRockSovereign if ernie is like the rest of Tommy's relatives, he is just as greedy about money as he is about.....well you know, he probably asked tommy for a job. Preferably a high paying one.

  72. M.... J....

    fiddle about!

  73. p.... ....

the ox had a nack for writing naughty tunes . cousin kevin, fiddle about, trick of the light, my wife, boris the spider, ect . he also had a knack for hookers and blow . poor guy . would be nice to still have him around .

  87. F.... ....

    @ClassicRockSovereign As punishment I suppose.

  88. L.... H....

@yamon98 i didn't know that i read somewhere so i guess i'm wrong sorry mate.

  89. D.... ....

vixeniita wants you to join the boob mafia

  90. A.... ....

@ClassicRockSovereign Why did they Let Tony Blair run the UK?

  91. A.... ....

Up with the Bellend, down with the foreskin!

  92. P.... ....

    lol @ lyrics

  93. A.... ....

    To show reality.
There are lots and lots of families that molest their own children sexually or not.
The intention of theat rockopera as putting a lot of "things" to decypher, things implied. Tommy's blindness for example. It was to show our blindness to the world.
When talking about a theme so important and heavy, writers must face the real world and, like I said, molesting kids exists(I'm not agreeing with it). And John Entwistle was very sadisct.
    Or maybe I'm wrong.

  94. A.... ....

Don't think thats true because it was John Entwistle who wrote these song and Cousin Kevin.

  95. A.... ....

Well, I think it's because or he was "cured" from alcolism or Tommy and his parents forgave him.

  96. L.... H....

@jorghad6 well this also reflects Pete townshends experiences with being molested

  97. c.... ....

Do you think Uncle Ernie should have taken "Keeping God's Children Safe"?

  98. l.... ....

but still, Cousin Keven was enough

  99. l.... ....

    why write this?
