Who, The - Blue, Red And Grey Lyrics

Some people seem so obsessed with the morning
Get up early just to watch the sun rise
Some people like it more when there's fire in the sky
Worship the sun when it's high
Some people go for those sultry evenings
Sipping cocktails in the blue, red and grey
But I like every minute of the day

I like every second, so long as you are on my mind
Every moment has its special charm
It's all right when you're around, rain or shine
I know a crowd who only live after midnight
Their faces always seem so pale
And then there's friends of mine who must have sunlight
They say a suntan never fails
I know a man who works the night shift
He's lucky to get a job and some pay
And I like every minute of the day

I dig every second
I can laugh in the snow and rain
I get a buzz from being cold and wet
The pleasure seems to balance out the pain

And so you see that I'm completely crazy
I even shun the south of France
The people on the hill, they say I'm lazy
But when they sleep, I sing and dance
Some people have to have the sultry evenings
Cocktails in the blue, red and grey
But I like every minute of the day

I like every minute of the day

  7. S.... S....

My 2nd favourite Who album after Quadrophenia and imo hopelessly underrated and unappreciated.

  8. a.... ....

Townshend is of the heart. always has been

  9. D.... K....

Like a rabbinical song of praise

  10. K.... L....

Seems to be a follow-up to The Dirty Jobs from Quadrophenia

  11. B.... C....

A song about loving life written by a man who was feeling suicidal.

    Fuckin' beautiful.

  12. A.... G....

great french horn by the Ox

  13. m.... ....

At first it seems to be a nice little acoustic cut, perhaps something that was just thrown onto the album as filler. However upon listening to the words, these lyrics are incredibly powerful and showcases his lyrical brilliance.

  14. F.... F....

    real heart to this song

  15. R.... L....

    Soon forget

  16. J.... N....

This has always been one of the loveliest little gems. So simple and yet so melancholy.

  17. K.... M....

Reminds me of a lady I know

  18. J.... P....

Reminds me of “soon forget” by Pearl Jam

    J.... P....

You don't say... Maybe that's why EV wrote "Thanks P.T." on the booklet of binaural

  19. D.... S....

    I _am_ the 1,000th like

  20. a.... ....

Ok, now I have to buy an Ukelele

    a.... ....

    to funny

  21. m.... ....

Pete goes Joni meets The Moody Blues

  22. J.... M....

One of the more Beatle-esq songs. Beautiful.

  23. T.... B....

    The 'appiest 'oo song?

  24. D.... S....

One of my favorite songs !

  25. D.... S....

THank you Pete for being an amazing human being, keep up the great work....it was an honor to be able to see you at the backyard concerts in the pacific pallisades California.

  26. D.... G....

A beautiful song in every way. Pete is terrific.

    C.... H....

Thank you. Great lyrics. I love so much this song, along with Sunrise, both awesome songs.
    🇧🇷

  28. r.... ....

This song is on my top 25 list of time..... please note that all of these songs are my number one.....

    r.... ....

I know the feeling, Randy. Aren't there so many great songs?

  29. R.... D....

This song led to Pearl Jam's Soon Forget. Which then led to Eddie Vedder's ukelele solo album. Well the winning streak had to end eventually.

  30. L.... S....

My husband liked this song ( god rest his soul )...he went too early

    L.... S....

My condolences, Lynne. May his memory be for a blessing.

    L.... S....

    Get over yourself.

  31. R.... ....

Beautiful. Everytime I listen to this, I can't help but have this HUGE ole' smile on my face. Love this!!!

  32. e.... ....

Happy 73. birthday, Peter Dennis Blandford „Pete“ Townshend.

  33. R.... ....

Beautiful. How have I never heard this? btw I got 100th comment!

  34. N.... 7....

This song made me buy a ukelele

  35. N.... 7....

    Beautiful

  36. p.... l....

Peter Townsend was such a musical genius.

    p.... l....

    'Was'??

  37. M.... ....

is pete t. plaing an ukulele or a banjo in this song?

    M.... ....

    He's playing the ukulele!

    M.... ....

thanks for the information. happy new year!

  38. M.... ....

the bad co. wrote a song later called "silver, blue and gold."

    M.... ....

ps the ukulele is cool also.

    M.... ....

Great song, think the colors referenced mean something to us

  39. M.... ....

this reminds me of bad companys "silver blue and gold". but the who wrote this first.

  40. H.... S....

    Great Song

  41. B.... K....

The guy is practically a genius songwriter, plays an awesome guitar, and oh by the way can sing pretty good too!

    B.... K....

    Practically? Tough room.

  42. G.... M....

one of my favorite who songs. thanks for posting.

  43. B.... M....

    Love love love this song!

  44. P.... ....

There's nothing wrong with being alone.

  45. B.... ....

    Is this 21 pilots?

    B.... ....

No, it's the Who. Appreciate the classics :)

  46. g.... h....

I remember my first hearing. Midday ish...sunny. And not a care in the world. It's important not to forget (double negative??) these turning points in a life. Seriously, I became much more positive when I heard a hero of mine espouse these sentiments.

  47. M.... A....

World's first emo song. Pete/The Who really did invent everything!

  48. C.... ....

I cry every time I listen to this, a friend (basically a father) I was close to died. He played this a lot.

  49. p.... ....

lovelovelove it! the uke, entwistle's silver band and townshend's lovely high, fragile voice.... a real little gem swimming amongst the black tar of depression that made up most of his output around this time.

  50. C.... W....

Thank You, Jeff. I miss you.

  51. G.... ....

Tremendous song from a gem of an album <3

  52. o.... ....

Speaking about great brass sounds, Pink Floyd's "Final Cut" and Peter Gabriel's "Father Son" borrowed from this masterpiece a lot.

  53. D.... C....

Pete must have been in an unusually good mood when he wrote this! Not his usual stuff, but I do like it! Nice to hear a light and gentle side to his writing!! Maybe one of his kids was just born?

    D.... C....

I've read where Pete said he was very depressed at the time. Nearly suicidal. If I recall correctly, he said it was his manager that asked him to right a song like this. It's my favourite Pete Towshend composition. Thanks Pete! this song has been so healing for me.

    D.... C....

Indeed, it is apparently a song trying to cheer himself up when he was extremely depressed out of his alcoholism. I love the melancholy sound of the brass

  54. C.... K....

Wish the CD remaster omitted the crossfade from the previous track. I think Pete counts it in on the LP.

  55. M.... A....

One of my favorite if not my favorite song. I try to enjoy every minute, every emotion, every happiness, every sorrow, life seems to blow by, it's so short. I used to live for the weekend when I was younger, what a waste to be unhappy 5 days a week. Enjoy life, that's Pete's message, the most genius composer of our time. I want this played at my memorial.

    M.... A....

a song with a similar message is by the beatles-"we can work it out."

    M.... A....

MsChris402.. Beatles song is more about a relationship coming to an end or in a bit of trouble! Petes message in blue red and grey is everyone is different so get on with life and enjoy.

  56. V.... J....

    i think that's actually an ukulele .

    V.... J....

    Yeah, it's a ukelele.

  57. B.... ....

    I dig it

  58. a.... m....

One of only two songs I love featuring a bango. The other song wasn't from the movie Deliverance.  Actually I'm thinking of two songs I loved featuring the bag pipes. The one I remember was SKY PILOT by the Animals. But there was another song that featured the bango that I liked even more then The Who's Blue, Red n Gray. It probably will come to me 5 minutes from now or tomorrow.

    a.... m....

George Harrison loved playimg the ukelele

    a.... m....

    Nacked eye

    a.... m....

    Ukelele.

    a.... m....

kmslegal bet not many know who that is! I do! A musical genius who wrote the score for Day of the Dead by George Romero, Romero also helped write the music! RIP George.

    a.... m....

George Harrison was the guy who wrote the score for Day of the Dead? :-D :-D Yeah, that's it. George was a movie scorer.

  59. S.... M....

    love blue,red and grey...
    memories

  60. E.... O....

My favorite track while hiking in damp weather. " I get a buzz from being cold and wet, the pleasure seems to balance out the pain"

  61. m.... o....

listening to this after an intense day at work .. what an antidote :)

  62. R.... g....

I have not heard this song since it was released >35 years ago. Missed it.

  63. E.... T....

For whatever reason I get this strange feeling when I listen to this song. It's like a tinge of sadness, a little bit of happiness, and an overwhelming sense of peace. It's strange... such a lovely song. :)

    E.... T....

Emma Taub.... it has cold winters early morning millitary feel when the trumpet comes in! It is the simplicity and brilliance of the song that gives it the stange multi emotional feeling 😊

    E.... T....

Emma Taub Blue represents sadness, Red means happiness, and grey is neutral/peace. That can explain why you feel this way during the song.

    E.... T....

I think I read somewhere Pete Townshend wrote it at a moment when he was feeling suicidal.

    E.... T....

Never heard a more apt interpretation for this song. :)

    E.... T....

Well it's one of the ultimate "lyrics don't match the music" songs. Like the exact opposite of "However Much I Booze" - the most cheerful sounding song ever written by an alcoholic who hates himself. Both great songs.

  64. m.... o....

    beautiful song

  65. s.... e....

"I DIG every second." Now thats a 70's word for sure.
Great song. One of my faves on this LP.

    s.... e....

+sal economos It's more of a '60s word. Townshend was living in the past.

    s.... e....

sal economos lol i know, that always makes me smile!

  66. k.... ....

    I've always loved this song!

  67. J.... T....

Soon Forget by Pearl Jam brought me here.

  68. 8.... ....

I understand this isn't one of Pete's favorites, but it's one of mine.

    8.... ....

878set I think it makes him feel too vulnerable

    8.... ....

He didn't want this song on the album

    8.... ....

    Me too!

  69. J.... W....

    I love this song.

  70. n.... ....

This song is so chillingly beautiful, it makes my spine get cold and my eyes warm. Definitely one of my go to songs to make me a little happier in bad times, I can relate to Pete's anger and depression. But he's proof that you can live through the hard times and come out smiling.

    n.... ....

couldn't have said it any better myself

    n.... ....

Spot on its just got something about it, not very Who, but that's the charm

  71. J.... U....

    Definitely another favorite. ;-)

  72. K.... K....

According to Pete, this was an outtake!!!
    WOW! More outtakes, please!

  73. I.... ....

One of my favorite songs ... another work of art by Pete ...

  74. t.... ....

hm yeah, though when I'm stuck in a cubicle 9 to 5 I don't like those minutes as much as I like others ;-)

  75. R.... C....

The one song I know how to play that's written for the ukulele. It's quite a lovely song.

  76. R.... C....

    "red white & blue-symbolizes patriotism." #murica

  77. M.... ....

    tip toe through the tulips.

    M.... ....

    MsChris402 great reference

  78. M.... ....

    red white & blue-symbolizes patriotism.

  79. M.... ....

a cocktail at sunset at the ocean.dreamy.

  80. N.... ....

sipping cocktails watching the blue sky, turn red from the setting sun and then turn to grey from the night coming..

  81. N.... ....

I like every minute of the day.

  82. B.... A....

ha ha you bet...although we enjoyed listening to Tim's song about Tulips (or something)

  83. B.... A....

UKELELE! Pete was way ahead of his time.......

  84. J.... S....

such a sweet song. shows that the who can go anywhere and master every musical piece they touch:)

  85. B.... S....

I think The Who By Numbers is the closest the band's ever gotten to a Pete Townshend solo album. He really put so much emotion into these songs, and it's much more personal than any of their other work. This song is especially heart breaking because he wrote it at one of the lowest points of his life, yet it's such a positive message.

  86. e.... ....

This seems to be a forgotten Who album, like all of their albums except this one has some sort of legacy to it.

  87. K.... ....

    Magnificent song, great jazz band!

    K.... ....

Jazz band? The Who? Better recalibrate that meter.

  88. A.... S....

    @BBBBAAAAM loser

  89. p.... ....

@anino5 Not so simply, with the horns. But Pete singing his lyrics with a minimum of accompaniment is amazing. Listen and savor those lyrics. The whole album is a Townshend confessional, minus the priest.

  90. y.... ....

    I love this album!

  91. P.... G....

@lawlersticks I hear you. It's all going to be okay

  92. 7.... ....

Nice ........Brings back great memories.....' I like every minute' of this album!!

  93. M.... S....

Hang in there, kid....... don't be afraid to cry- but your Dad would want you laugh, too.

  94. D.... R....

Sorry Eddie V. ! Pete beat you to it years ago!

  95. d.... ....

@blwbl The song "Longing To Belong" from Eddie's album is almost a copycat of this song...and that's not a bad thing.

  96. M.... ....

@lawlersticks Your dad sounds like an awesome guy

  97. c.... ....

i want this song played at my funeral<3

  98. H.... ....

This song expresses my relationship to a T. love is a funny thing, in how it works.
