My 2nd favourite Who album after Quadrophenia and imo hopelessly underrated and unappreciated.

Townshend is of the heart. always has been

Like a rabbinical song of praise

Seems to be a follow-up to The Dirty Jobs from Quadrophenia

A song about loving life written by a man who was feeling suicidal.

At first it seems to be a nice little acoustic cut, perhaps something that was just thrown onto the album as filler. However upon listening to the words, these lyrics are incredibly powerful and showcases his lyrical brilliance.

This song led to Pearl Jam's Soon Forget. Which then led to Eddie Vedder's ukelele solo album. Well the winning streak had to end eventually.

I remember my first hearing. Midday ish...sunny. And not a care in the world. It's important not to forget (double negative??) these turning points in a life. Seriously, I became much more positive when I heard a hero of mine espouse these sentiments.

I cry every time I listen to this, a friend (basically a father) I was close to died. He played this a lot.

lovelovelove it! the uke, entwistle's silver band and townshend's lovely high, fragile voice.... a real little gem swimming amongst the black tar of depression that made up most of his output around this time.

Speaking about great brass sounds, Pink Floyd's "Final Cut" and Peter Gabriel's "Father Son" borrowed from this masterpiece a lot.

Pete must have been in an unusually good mood when he wrote this! Not his usual stuff, but I do like it! Nice to hear a light and gentle side to his writing!! Maybe one of his kids was just born?

I've read where Pete said he was very depressed at the time. Nearly suicidal. If I recall correctly, he said it was his manager that asked him to right a song like this. It's my favourite Pete Towshend composition. Thanks Pete! this song has been so healing for me.

Indeed, it is apparently a song trying to cheer himself up when he was extremely depressed out of his alcoholism. I love the melancholy sound of the brass

Wish the CD remaster omitted the crossfade from the previous track. I think Pete counts it in on the LP.

One of my favorite if not my favorite song. I try to enjoy every minute, every emotion, every happiness, every sorrow, life seems to blow by, it's so short. I used to live for the weekend when I was younger, what a waste to be unhappy 5 days a week. Enjoy life, that's Pete's message, the most genius composer of our time. I want this played at my memorial.

One of only two songs I love featuring a bango. The other song wasn't from the movie Deliverance.  Actually I'm thinking of two songs I loved featuring the bag pipes. The one I remember was SKY PILOT by the Animals. But there was another song that featured the bango that I liked even more then The Who's Blue, Red n Gray. It probably will come to me 5 minutes from now or tomorrow.

I have not heard this song since it was released >35 years ago. Missed it.

For whatever reason I get this strange feeling when I listen to this song. It's like a tinge of sadness, a little bit of happiness, and an overwhelming sense of peace. It's strange... such a lovely song. :)

Emma Taub.... it has cold winters early morning millitary feel when the trumpet comes in! It is the simplicity and brilliance of the song that gives it the stange multi emotional feeling 😊

Emma Taub Blue represents sadness, Red means happiness, and grey is neutral/peace. That can explain why you feel this way during the song.

I think I read somewhere Pete Townshend wrote it at a moment when he was feeling suicidal.

Well it's one of the ultimate "lyrics don't match the music" songs. Like the exact opposite of "However Much I Booze" - the most cheerful sounding song ever written by an alcoholic who hates himself. Both great songs.

I love this song.

This song is so chillingly beautiful, it makes my spine get cold and my eyes warm. Definitely one of my go to songs to make me a little happier in bad times, I can relate to Pete's anger and depression. But he's proof that you can live through the hard times and come out smiling.

I think The Who By Numbers is the closest the band's ever gotten to a Pete Townshend solo album. He really put so much emotion into these songs, and it's much more personal than any of their other work. This song is especially heart breaking because he wrote it at one of the lowest points of his life, yet it's such a positive message.

This seems to be a forgotten Who album, like all of their albums except this one has some sort of legacy to it.
