Whitley, Keith - Brother Jukebox Lyrics

Brother jukebox, sister wine
Mother freedom, father time
Since she left me by myself
You're the only family I've got left.

I go down to the same old cafe
Where I try to wash my troubles away
I'm still down and I'm still all alone
But it beats staying home all night long.

Brother jukebox, sister wine
Mother freedom, father time
Since she left me by myself
You're the only family I've got left.

[Instrumental]

I go home Lord, I climb that old stairway
And I tell myself tomorrow's a new day
But I know I'll just go down again
And spend my time with my new next of kin.

Brother jukebox, sister wine
Mother freedom, father time
Since she left me by myself
You're the only family I've got left.

You're the only family I've got left...

    c.... v....

carol vine you are so so right darlin, crisp, clear, straightforward that voice. Kentucky boy.!!!

  28. S.... C....

Best voice in Country music blows George Strait out of the water and I believe if he lived he would have been the king of country

    S.... C....

I'm a big fan of Keith Whitley but for you to say that he was better than King George I don't think so!!!!! I know Keith Whitley passed away a long time ago but George Strait has had so much longevity in country music when so many country artist have come and gone George Strait is still relevant today! Long Live Texas! Long Live King George Strait! Btw has more number one songs than any genre of music!

    S.... C....

Most ignorant comment I've read on a Keith Whitley video. I LOVE Keith but my goodness man George could sing his ass off as well and ANYTHING he touched went to number 1 for a reason .

  29. c.... v....

Keith's voice is always a comfort to listen to.

  30. K.... V....

There will NEVER be another sound like the angelic country voice of Keith Whitley.

  35. K.... D....

Blessed that my family introduced me to real country music growing up as a kid. 29 years old now and I still jam this kind of stuff. Country music will never be pure again

  36. J.... 2....

I feel like had he lived and released this song, it would have been probably his biggest hit.

  37. W.... M....

We lost Keith whitley too soon as well as john lennon and elvis Presley gone to soon as well glen Campbell to soon

  38. P.... M....

I dated Keith's cousin for years and I'm still friends with some of his relations that move up here to Ohio from east Kentucky years ago, really great people who can call Keith Whitley a really great relative and on top of the crop country singer.

    P.... M....

    Pat Maloney yeah, ok.

  39. c.... ....

Not near as good as Mark's version.  Mark has a much better voice.

    c.... ....

    It's the truth.

    c.... ....

    Yea i don't think so.

    c.... ....

Even Mark would agree that Keith is the definitive artist and Country voice.

    c.... ....

Congratulations! You just won an award of ''Hell to the No No''!

    c.... ....

Um hell no. Not even close. Keith was a much better singer.

  42. B.... C....

nobody cares bout anybody's input. Just listen to fuckin music people

  43. D.... V....

Yeah a blast from the past, love the good ol boy, the only one who comes close to him now is Blake Shelton, and he's gone through the trials and tribulations with his wife, now EX, who said the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

  44. J.... S....

I feel silly. Always thought that this was a Mark Chesnutt song, until today. Was listening to Pandora and heard Keith singing it

    J.... S....

I've never heard anyone except this one, I didn't realize it was Keith Whitley, my childhood matinee idol. My romantic hero. My Millennial Elvis.

    J.... S....

This song was actually written by Paul Craft and originally recorded by Don Everly

    J.... S....

Mark did cover it, but this is the best version.

    J.... S....

Mark Chesnutt did sing it and it was a single in the early 90s. That one was the only version I ever heard until recently when I heard this and Don Everly'd version.

  45. J.... L....

    Anyone know the chords?

  46. M.... ....

Dang good singer he is. I love his songs.

  59. K.... ....

I've always been a Keith Whitley fan since I was around 5 years old in the late 80's. Its a more real personal version of the song than Mark Chesnutt's cover. Don't get me wrong his version is good, but the man who wrote it was Keith and you can always feel his pain through his songs!

    K.... ....

+KK85 The song was written by Paul Clark and originally recorded by The Everyly Brothers. Keith's version is also a cover.

    K.... ....

    KK85 👍👌😎

    K.... ....

    Recorded by Don alone.

    K.... ....

i love this song too and love keith but he did not write this song paul craft did

    K.... ....

    i climb that stairway

  60. K.... ....

It's a shame him and Ronnie Dunn never got together for an album .

  61. g.... o....

i love this song, and the jukebox is always my friend

  62. C.... ....

I sang a demo of this song for this song's the writer and publisher, whom I used to work for.  "Brother Jukebox" was in line to be Keith's next single until the tragedy. It had already been recorded by the Bluegrass group, the Seldom Scene, and also Don Everly, I think.  Paul Craft, the writer and publisher above-mentioned, did a great demo on this song.  Keith must have liked it because he used essentially the same arrangement.  Keith and Chesnutt both nailed this song.  Hard to pick between them, so I shall just take both versions.  These two singers, while sharing fundamental similarities, are quite different in approach, texture and phrasing. Each each great in his own right, but it's beyond my pay grade to judge between them. Someday I'll hunt up that demo and post in on here somewhere. It came off really well and if some of you are like me, you're interested in the paths a song takes on its way to becoming a bonafide hit. It's often a tedious and tortuous passage.  Mr. Craft went overnight from having a hit single from Keith consigned to the solitary confinement of an "album cut."  I'm sure he was thrilled when Chesnutt saw the song's potential and turned it into the hit that Craft always thought it was.  But no happy endings here.  Too much lost, particularly for those who understand and appreciate real music. I am heartened to see on these pages how many of you are knowledgeable about and appreciate what is. in my view, undeniable and irreplaceable talent.  As long as you are around Keith's legacy is in good hands.

  63. e.... b....

@Josh Adams I don't blameyou he is one of my inspirations for wanting to be a professional singer

  64. R.... T....

Foi um dos bons cantores da música country. Perdemos.

  65. B.... S....

THAT IS SOLID 24 KARAT COUNTRY
    GOLD.

  66. D.... D....

Keith with always be my idol
    Play on whitley
    !

  67. P.... G....

So sad that he had to leave us... NEVER! Another like Keith...

    P.... G....

Pansye Gibbs Keith Whitley, George Jones, Johnny Paycheck, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, all are one-of-a-kind talent that are playing at Gods Olde Opry, and one day I hope to see it, country music went into the grave with Merle, while some very extremely talented artists remain (like Alan Jackson) once they are gone country will be no longer, yes other artists are out there but they will never be common knowledge or played on the radio like these ones were

    P.... G....

Josh ward can sing my Any good and his song whiskey and Whitley is also good.

  68. s.... p....

All I have left now is music and hes the best song writer in the world then and now the greatest voice I've ever heard love all his music rip

  69. R.... ....

Chestnut simply mimics keith.  He is good but there is only one Keith.  For a completely different approach give a listen to Don Everly's original 1977 version.  Its also on youtube.

  70. M.... H....

Keith Whitley is and will always be the greatest voice country music has ever known.....his voice brings a tear to my eyes....

  71. R.... c....

    Who did this song originally?

    R.... c....

    Don Everly

    R.... c....

@RM chain Also the bluegrass group, the Seldom Scene. Really good version with the great John Starling singing lead and the unforgettable John Duffy among the harmonies. On second thought Linda Ronstadt may have sung harmony on that session as well.

  72. R.... L....

  88. R.... M....

Brother jukebox....sister wine...mother freedom....father...since she left me by myself your the only family i got left.......one of the best songs in country music.the country music now is ok but it nowhere near as good as the older stuff..its almost like the artist back then actually wrote about real things.im not saying they dont now but it just that they dont connect with people like they used to.

  89. j.... ....

I think keith was dead before anyone knew who mark chesnut was

  90. M.... ....

I would've never thought I could love any version of this song more than Mark Chestnutt's. I was wrong!

  91. D.... D....

  92. R.... S....
