Weller, Paul - What Would He Say? Lyrics

If he is watching still
I'd feel ashamed
What would he think of us?
So cold and mean

And cold's not what he was
Nor full of bitter thoughts
None that I could see
Nor kept from me

Let a world go by
What a shame
Is there none left to try to save?

Oh, does nothing change?
Only objects alter
All those high class games at the altar
What's inside is nothing, what a waste

In a world full of pain
Why add to it?
When there's none left to blame
You gotta face up to it

Oh, does nothing change?
Only objects alter
All those high class games at the altar
What's inside is nothing, what a waste

Stumbling down a street
Tied at two left feet
Those days so far away
What would he say?

That we've no patience now
We've gone too far
And it only takes a spark
To start a war

Oh
Oh

Weller, Paul What Would He Say? Comments

A gentle 60's vibe. Almost Bacharach in style but still pure Weller. I am impressed by this mans musical depth. Bowie reinvented himself sometimes brutally but Weller takes you along with him as if it was your idea in the first place.

I think this song is amazing, I've been a fan for nearly 30 years now and his music and lyrics are still so strong .long may it continue.

acoustically none better than the greengrocer of pop!!!!!

    Moses,
I hear ya bud but he’s not a young geezer now. He’s singing about things relevant to being his age. Losing a parent, mortality and so forth. It means something to me because have been going through same thing. I agree would love him to set the house ablaze again

Well, thank you for saying so. That's the only reason I write these negative posts; I know other Weller fans would LOVE him to set the house ablaze again! Not necessarily with the old songs either-- how about an impassioned rant against Trump's selfish nationalism? Paul used to call himself an internationalist; why give it up now that we need him?

The worst thing is, I really WANT to like it! But it's just too shiftless and sad. Paul was my inspiration as a teen and young adult. There are musicians his age who aren't withering away like this. The world needs the Angry and Motivated Paul Weller back again -- the guy who wrote Set the House Ablaze!

Love it , almost sounds like a great Burt Bacharach

    This is beautiful!

Some people just have to spoil the party and show how clever they are by sniping at the more talented. Still it’s his right not to like it. Weller and his music are things that make the world a better place to live in.

Sorry you feel that way Moses mate;  people must change or they stagnate.  Weller can't make the same music he did in The Jam, The Style Council or even as he did in the Stanley Road era.  True artists evolve and change.  If he still made the same type of music then he might as well just be the leader of his own tribute band.  All things must pass.

I agree with you Simon and I think this album is up there with his best , to still be writing songs that are  so relevant and lyrically sublime is our good fortune , as for Moses , why write that ? if you don't like it . don't listen .

Even if I'm so nostalgic about The Jam and The Style Council, and the good times gone (who doesn't?!) I'm totally agree with you !!

I disagree. I am fine with Elton John who stuck to his style for all his amazing career. In my opinion Weller reached his perfection and maturity during the TSC era.

I can't stand Paul Weller's music now. This is terrible.
