Weller, Paul - Early Morning Rain Lyrics

This is the one

In the early morning rain
With a dollar in my hand
And an aching in my heart
And my pockets full of sand
I'm a long way from home
Lord, I miss my loved ones so
In the early morning rain
With no place to go

Out on runway number nine
Seven-O-seven set to go
But I'm stuck here on the ground
Where the cold wind blows
Now the liquor tasted good
And the women all were fast
There she goes my friend
She'll be rolling down at last

Hear the mighty engines roar

See the silver bird on high
She's away and westward bound
Far above the clouds she'll fly
Where the morning rain don't fall
And the sun always shines
She'll be flying over my home
In about three hours time

So the airports got me down
It's no earthly good to me
'Cause I'm stuck here on the ground
Bored and drunk as I can be
You can't jump a jet plane
Like you can a freight train
So I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain

Weller, Paul Early Morning Rain Comments
  1. J.... M....

    I love this song

  2. p.... h....

    Presley, Weller, Lightfoot....

In my humble opinion, all of the versions/interpretations of this great song are on a par.

  3. I.... H....

Damn! the mature Paul Weller voice is the perfect voice for this song! All the depth of emotion and, at the some time, the strength of one who has suffered, but who is not beaten.

  4. J.... c....

Everyone has covered this folk standard. Dylan. Neil Young. Elvis. NOBODY does it better than Weller.

  5. D.... W....

    Like this cover best! Great!

  6. L.... R....

I do love this song by this singer of it...The perfect voice for it...Back for an encore performance...Again & again & again...Great guitarist too...

  7. S.... E....

You just have to love this for the raw edge Weller puts on it, he sure has come a long way since the Jam in the late 70's - I saw them in a working mens club in Woking before they got a record deal - rough and ready but they had a punchy style that would take them to stardom even then.

  8. J.... G....

    Love it Paul.

  14. I.... G....

great version by Mr Weller that's what I love about the guy his music means so much to so many he certainly helped me when I was splitting up and then brought joy when I took my daughter to c him at Edinburgh Castle magic night thanks Paul x

  15. c.... ....

reminds me of my dad who wasted 20 something years with my mum who treated him terribly, he used to listen to this in the car on the way to my grandparents house when I was about 8 and I distinctively remember him listening to it one of the many times they had split up when I was a kid, it was his 44th birthday today, he deserves the world and I love him so much. I hope the next 20 years are a lot better and make up for the past shitty 20 years. He's the best. Love ya dad xxxxxx

  16. B.... H....

Well done ...Gordon had a big following in the U.S. as well as Canada....I'm born, and raised in Chicagoland myself...Did Gordon have a significant following in the U.K. ?

    B.... H....

Yes he had hit success in U.K. and Paul would have heard them in his youth.

  17. F.... W....

Eva Cassidy's version is more beautiful

    F.... W....

Maybe, but this is more lived in. I really like both. You should too. :)

    F.... W....

But Eva gets the lyrics wrong.

  18. C.... C....

    2 the world oioi

  29. P.... L....

just getting better with age Paul!

  30. S.... ....

Elvis does (did) a good version too.

  31. J.... V....

Gordon Lightfoot's original by a Canadian country mile!

  32. L.... ....

A song you wouldn't expect Weller to cover, but he does a great version of it. Peter,Paul & Mary did a great cover as well , & Paul is equal to that.

  33. A.... F....

great song. You can see gordy stood there in the rain, sheepskin coat, guitar slung over his back, staring into the early morning mist, puffing on a marlboro or somesuch. Weller, of course, gets it.

  34. T.... ....

So happy to discover this, Paul Weller singing Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain, sweet!

  35. A.... G....

doesnt matter what paul sings, i love the honesty in his songs.he is an amazing artist.love you always paul

  36. F.... ....

None of those others have a neck a wide as our Paul's though eh? PEACE!!!!!

  37. H.... D....

I prefer the version of Peter, Paul and Mary.

  38. t.... ....

dont talk shit my good man Elvis does a great cover of this song and was a great singer but weller is a true artist when i say that i mean he writes and plays

  39. p.... ....

Check Tim Obrien's version. It's real, authentic
    , and inspired.

  40. j.... G....

this version is by far the best of this good old song...I don't know if springsteen covered it ...he might come close... but this version is spot on

  41. A.... R....

one of those guitrists nee to be quiet cos they r ruining this ong x..... just saying x

  42. p.... M....

Love love love this version mr weller LEGEND!

  43. R.... H....

Now I really understand why I learned fingerpicking 4 years ago. Type in the search field: Early Morning Rain; Gordon Lightfoot cover song by Paul Smith (1/23/2010) , and you'll see why Paul Weller sounds like an unsubtle Dutch farmer on his guitar.

  44. J.... F....

Wonderful voice but sung too slow.

  45. L.... K....

I started off not liking it, but by the time it finished I was converted, great version of a great song.
I think the 3 dislikes should give it another listen.

  46. d.... b....

A superb cover version performed by one of the most influential artists this country has produced, the mans a legend.

  47. w.... ....

    Better than Elvis, +++

  56. H.... M....

    @chicokeith - it's the liquor tasted good ;)

  57. E.... B....

Great version.. very soulful. When you have a truly great song, it's amazing how many different arrangements of it can work. Thanks for this clip.

  58. s.... ....

    AWFUL !!

  59. c.... ....

Oh!! Thought he'd sing and the lemons all were fine.
    Very haunting version,really good.

  60. c.... ....

    The wicker tasted good?

  61. m.... ....

    genius indeed.. love this man!

  62. J.... w....

    Weller,what a voice,what a fucking genius.

  63. g.... ....

Sounds great! Just a tad bluesy...good voice.

  64. g.... ....

    @Puguglybonehead
Yes!!! I also believe Peter Paul and Mary`s version is def the best cover.

  65. J.... B....

With all due respect to everybody else's opinion, I really like Paul Weller's version. As he's aged, his voice has developed a weathered, world-weary quality that seems to perfectly fit the mood painted by the lyrics. In his younger "Jam" days, I don't think that he could have sung this song convincingly. It's the type of song he needed to grow into. My son and I saw Weller, in Washington, D.C., two or three years ago and it was a memorable show.

  66. w.... ....

@74kennymac Elvis? Elvis could taken a massive shit on stage and Elvis fans would have thought it was the greatest shit ever taken.

  67. c.... ....

i kind of know what you mean, but i recommend a few listens. the problem is, most people parrot the song almost note for note like the original.
this is the most interpretive of the versions i've heard.

  68. M.... H....

looking for someone to capture the song fully, to love it, to believe it, to want to jump the jet plane

  69. M.... D....

    I love this version

  70. j.... ....

He`s neck looks like Mike Tyson`s in that photo!!!

  71. r.... ....

Paul Weller you are fucking BRILLIANT
