Welch, Gillian - The Way The Whole Thing Ends Lyrics

Say you wanna see my garden
And you wanna make it shine
Say you wanna see my blue jeans
Hanging on your old clothesline
Standing in the backdoor crying
Now you wanna be my friend
That's the way the cornbread crumbles
That's the way the whole thing ends

Now what's a little baby doing
Dressing up in banker's clothes?
What's a little sweetheart like you
Doing with a bloody nose?
Standing in the backdoor crying
Now you're gonna need a friend
That's the way the cornbread crumbles
That's the way the whole thing ends

Now once you had a hook and ladder
Up into the headless night
And once you had a motorcycle
But you couldn't ride it right
Standing in the doorway crying
Now you're gonna need a friend
That's the way the cornbread crumbles
That's the way the whole thing ends

Someone said something one time
But Daddy didn't talk too loud
People oughta stick together
That's the way to make a crowd
But here you come alone and crying
Now you wanna be my friend
That's the way the cornbread crumbles
That's the way the whole thing ends

Momma's in the beauty parlor
And Daddy's in the baseball pool
Sister's in the drive-in movie
Brother's in the old high school
Now here you come alone and crying
Once, you know, you were my friend
That's the way the cornbread crumbles
That's the way the whole thing ends

Standing in the backdoor crying
Now you wanna be my friend
That's the way the cornbread crumbles
That's the way the whole things ends

  7. C.... G....

  8. E.... S....

Is there no end to this girl's talent? Again thank you Gillian

  9. A.... G....

I've never heard of this track or this Artist before and just played it by chance not knowing what to expect and was utterly captivate within the space of a few chords. I love this track so much that I've had it on repeat over and over for 45 mins without a break, and will defintly be checking out more of Gillian Welch's songs - Thanks so much for sharing this track Hans and thanks, Youtube for being there - Music helps make the World a better place - have liked and subscribed, thanks again.

Gillian and Dave make some of the most remarkable music ever recorded, with their minimalist approach. It's hard to say enough about them and their art. When I think of other artists to compare them to in terms of pure excellence, Alison Kraus and Union Station come to mind. Thanks so much to the both of you!

  11. J.... ....

Her voice is similar to Lisa Marie Presley's.

Thank you so much for posting the lyrics! Do you happen to have the lyrics for "Lawman"?

  14. I.... E....

hardly strictly bluegrass in Golden Gate park brought me here!

    I.... E....

I was there. It was windy.

  15. C.... R....

Love it. " People ought to stick together, that's the way to make a crowd."

  16. R.... H....

I saw Gillian and Dave a coupla years ago. That concert was one of the most  eloquently beautiful things I have ever witnessed. You could hear a pin drop in that room...people were so transfixed.

    R.... H....

I agree, every performance of Gillian and Dave remind me why I love music. So talented! Dave is an incredible guitarist!

    R.... H....

yah. she has been in Minnesota-several times.

    R.... H....

A truly metaphysical experience. Lucinda Williams explains it as the reason as to what the songs are all about. To get us back there, wherever it is.

    R.... H....

listen to my morphine. maybe Gillians best. stears in my ice,

  17. B.... W....

Does anybody understand the words to this song? If anybody can explain it to me, I would be grateful. Love the music.

    B.... W....

I was an English major, so I'll give it a try. It's from the POV of a woman who has wised up and is saying "no deal" to the entreaty of a former lover. The early verses retrace his selfish and irresponsible behavior on the way up and out of her life, and the later verses are about his fall and plea for acceptance and readmission to her life. The chorus lyric progresses from "Now you're going to need a friend" to "Once you know you were my friend" to "Now you want to be my friend." That's essentially the timeline of the story. She engages in some mild surrealism and a little deadpan humor. what's a little sweetheart like you / doing with a bloody nose? That's what it looks like to me, anyway.

    B.... W....

If you dont understand, maybe you should listen again

    B.... W....

@Harold Fethe somewhat the way I read it, genders reversed - "little sweetheart" and "just want to be friends" are not really male attributes are they.

  18. H.... ....

    Just did

  19. J.... C....

A definite Tom Waits influence here That's the way the stomach rumbles
That's the way the bee bumbles and everybody wants to know how is it gonna end

    J.... C....

    Joe Caissy meh debatable

  20. h.... ....

    lovely lovely I love it.

  21. b.... ....

One poor soul must be shaking after a night of drinking and acidently hit the wrong button

  22. M.... C....
