Waylon Jennings - The Devil's Right Hand Lyrics

About the time that Daddy left to fight the big war
I saw my first pistol in the general store
In the general store when I was thirteen
Thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen

l asked if I could have one someday when I grew up
Mama dropped a dozen eggs, she really blew up
Really blew up, I didn't understand
Mama said, "The pistol is the devil's right hand"

The devil's right hand
The devil's right hand
Mama said, "The pistol
Is the devil's right hand"

My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoot as fast as lightnin' but it loads a mite slow
Loads a mite slow and soon I found out
It can get you into trouble but it can't get you out

So then I went and bought myself a Colt 45
Called a Peacemaker but I never knew why
Never knew why, I didn't understand
Mama said, "The pistol is the devil's right hand"

The devil's right hand
The devil's right hand
Mama said, "The pistol
Is the devil's right hand"

The devil's right hand
The devil's right hand
Mama said, "The pistol
Is the devil's right hand"

Well I get into a card game in a company town
Caught a miner cheating, I shot the dog down
Shot the dog down, I watched the man fall
Never touched his holster, never had a chance to draw

The trial was in the morning and they [?] me out of bed
Asked me how I pleaded, "Not guilty" I said
"Not guilty", I said, you've got the wrong man
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand

The devil's right hand
The devil's right hand
Mama said, "The pistol
Is the devil's right hand"

The devil's right hand
The devil's right hand
Nothing touched the trigger
But the devil's right hand

My Mama said, "The pistol
Is the devil's right hand"

Remind me of the school shootings is that weird?

  2. G.... Y....

Waylon could take any song and make it a hit.

  4. J.... M....

steve and waylon 2 best versions.

  5. J.... B....

    Good song

  6. M.... P....

This Version is absolutly Great. I hear this song my First Time in the Movie The Betrayed. Berry nice

  7. P.... a....

Waylon should have recorded ' lord it hard to be humble""

  8. c.... w....

    AM WAYLON!

  9. G.... ....

I love Waylon's version the best. Maybe it's because I heard the song first in the movie Betrayed and it really resonated with me. Have since listened to Johnny's as well as its writer, Steve Earle's version. Gotta say, Waylon does it for me.

  10. D.... W....

The movie was where I first heard it, too, and this is the first version I heard. Loved it right away. I also love Steve Earle’s take. It’s his song.

  11. j.... ....

Good song but I support the right to keep and bear arms shall not me infringed

  12. D.... W....

    Highwaymen are better.

  13. A.... .....

I like the original better Steve Earle

  14. L.... B....

    Wat ever

  15. j.... ....

Always know and appreciate that Original is Original, I hate covers. Took me time to find this. Google always misleads.

    j.... ....

This is not the original, it is a cover. Steve Earle wrote and recorded it first, though Waylon's was the first to be widely released. (Earle re-released it later.)

  16. E.... P....

I heard this song on the movie betrayed love waylon

    E.... P....

    great film, Betrayed.

  17. J.... S....

Waylon is still the fukin man. Hello from montana.

    J.... S....

    Pure badassery

  18. W.... D....

This is version is best of all

  19. A.... ....

    Johnny cash?

  20. N.... L....

    anti Z.O.G.

  21. d.... h....

Waylon don't need any help. Steve earl is a traitor. Betrayed USA with his taliban song, betrayed Dixie with his "it's time to take it down song". Waylon is the man.

    d.... h....

Brandon Holtzclaw I got your moron right here princess. The little traitor sung a song supporting the taliban and even made some donations. Either read up or shut up.

    d.... h....

Waylon was almost as far to the left as Steve, so you might want to start listening better. And Steve never made any song "supporting the Taliban", and certainly never contributed money to them. He did write a song trying to understand a confused American kid who got peripherally involved with the Taliban, but it was not in support of their ideals.

    d.... h....

darlincommitme Nice try commie...keep googling and try to educate yourself.

    d.... h....

You're right,dw.As a Canuck,I can tell you we have the same problem.Third World types have no respect for our founding fathers' culture.Damn 'em to hell!

    d.... h....

Lmao shut up boomer. Its gonna be funny when u find out waylon was probably the most liberal country singer of all time next to kristofferson

  22. J.... B....

No way, Cash's version is much better.

  23. C.... H....

    Love it

  24. l.... s....

The best version without a doubt

  25. m.... ....

love this song,, words are so true with so many die at the end of the gun,,

  26. D.... B....

I love Waylon so much I named my favorite Hound dog WAYLON!!!!! I miss the Outlaw

  27. c.... ....

I like it better than the Steve Earle version.

  28. A.... ....

I love Johnny Cash. And I love "Copperhead Road" by Steve Earle. But THIS is my favorite version of "The Devil's Right Hand," hands down!

  29. p.... p....

how sad to reflect as we travel through life, our lives are enriched by performers like Waylon, Cash etc , only to find one day that they have gone for ever. Thank the lord that we have the technology to enjoy their legacy beyond their time on earth. RIP

  30. R.... ....

THIS is the BEST version !

  31. M.... S....

I don't think any country singer had more feeling than Waylon. He was the best.

  32. O.... ....

I actually like this more than the original by Johnny Cash. I like the beat a bit better as well as Jennings' vocals. And it also helps that the song was featured in the solid 1988 drama, Betrayed and that's where I first heard it and it has left an impact on me ever since.

    O.... ....

Cash's version is not the original. In fact it was released 17 years after Waylon's. The song was written by Steve Earle, and he recorded a version on his first album, but that album was never released and his label dropped him. Waylon heard the demo and liked it, and then recorded and released it in 1986. By then Earle had a new label, and had success with Guitar Town. Earle then re-recorded it and released it in 1988. Cash's version was released in 2003, after his death, although the Highwaymen recorded a version in the 90s. (It was one of several songs Cash recorded in the 90s which were released after his death.)

    O.... ....

    darlincommitme

I knew Steve's was the original, but I did not know the rest. Thanks.

  33. P.... a....

Compared to Waylon's version, John cash stunk up the joint!

  34. c.... ....

I always have "the devil's right hand" withe me , concealed of course.

  35. C.... ....

Yes, it was in Betrayed I love this song he was such a kind man he used to call my grandpa "The Doc" when I was little. My sister and I were so excited to meet him because he sang the Duke Boys Theme! lol

  36. k.... o....

this is the first time i heard this song in like 6 years ( im 10)

  37. J.... D....

    Waylon was the man
    Is the man
And will always be the man
    Forever with me wherever I
    May go

    J.... D....

    mine too hoss

    J.... D....

    I agree wholeheartedly!!

  38. D.... N....

Good Version but still prefer the original from Steve Earle

    D.... N....

    WHAT ?=LOL

    D.... N....

    420 K-I-A PRODUCTIONS

    Steve wrote it though

  39. g.... h....

    love this song

  40. a.... ....

Way better than the Johnny Cash version.

  41. C.... R....

Is there were a concert version of this impeccable song? Love my Waylon, but also bow down to Steve Earle, writer of this song with such a TREMENDOUSLY lovely swing to it... please... more...

  42. J.... G....

The Highwaymen do a good job on this song and you get 4 great artists on one song!

  43. K.... P....

This is my least favorite version because the guitar sounds annoying especially if you have it a bit loud. Waylon's voice sounds great tho. Cash's version is my favorite. It's dirty and raw like it should be.

    K.... P....

Agreed. Cash version is best. Not even a contest in my opinion.

  44. L.... S....

Now check out the version by the infamous UK rocker Ian Stuart...

  45. W.... D....

Waylon has a left and right that would scare the devil. One man I would never want to get into a barroom fight with, although I reckon we'd have nothing to fight over. At least I hope so.

    W.... D....

I'd be more worried about his grandson.

    W.... D....

If you really knew the man personally, you would know that Waylon was actually a very level headed, kind person who would rather settle ANY argument by talking and NOT fighting.

  46. .... ....

    Betrayed!

    .... ....

    Love that movie.

    .... ....

@abbagil - Love that movie and Debra Winger's butt too.

  47. W.... C....

steve earle deserves an Oscar for this song

    W.... C....

+Wilbur Cleaves It's a good song.I'm not for gun control but i still love the song.

    W.... C....

    +vicki sloane me too

    W.... C....

    Love Waylon

    W.... C....

Isn't an oscar for movies? Lol

  48. B.... S....

ok ive never commented on any of this but waylon is the man cash sucked on this one

    B.... S....

+Brad Smith lol I know! I just heard his version. He didnt put any feeling into it or something, It was dull. Waylon has the best version.

    B.... S....

even tho we have the same first name you're wrong

    B.... S....

Really? I thought Cash was way better on this song.

    B.... S....

Brad Smith This is my favorite too but Cash did a better job on it than Steve Earle.

    B.... S....

Waylon is awesome but c'mon Johnny's version is by far the best. Raw energy.

  49. G.... N....

It's a great song. Written by Steve Earle [if my memory serves me correctly]. I do like this version but in my opinion, Johnny Cash nails it. His voice and delivery is just so menacingly compelling. Right from the start youu know it's gonna end up bad for someone. Great story.

  50. B.... M....

OR IT CAN BE THE LEFT HAND OF GOD!!!!

    B.... M....

That mean the devil and god are holding hands? that's pretty gay.

    B.... M....

@9v9 only if u picture it my nigga

  51. u.... s....

hi waylon , it is a super song,,,

  52. M.... F....

Too bad Waylon and Steve never sang it together

    M.... F....

    I love this song.

    M.... F....

    Hell yeah.

  53. M.... ....

Heard it for the first time in 1987(?) in the movie,-"Betrayed" with Tom Berenger and Debra Winger. (by Steve Earle?) A good movie, with a great song!! Stein (Stone) from Norway....

    M.... ....

    Mr1964Stone
    I believe that was Waylon

    M.... ....

    It was waylons version

  54. J.... W....

This version (the best of all) was used in the movie "Betrayed" during closing credits I believe.
Not a country fan but Waylon Jennings was a true master.

    J.... W....

    The Best

    J.... W....

The feel this song delivered with the scene was amazing..

    J.... W....

Jim Weygandt Johnny cash has a better version

    J.... W....

@Jim Weygandt - that's right. I found out about this great song when watching the movie "Betrayed". Since then, listening the song I also see the Debra Winger's GREAT ass.

    J.... W....

yes thom Berringer and Deborah winger

  55. P.... M....

I like both of Steve Earle's and Waylon's version.

    P.... M....

@Pete Marshall I agree, Stein (Stone) from Norway.....

  56. J.... N....

Bob Seger has a version of Devils Right Hand on his new Ride Out album....very much like Waylon's version here....loving it!

  57. j.... k....

what if your left-handed!i,m good, but this song is awesome.we have the same name.WAYLON.

    j.... k....

this song is what is now called "micro aggression" against lefty's. lol

    j.... k....

+tomkat898 How do you figure? The lyrics certainly read like a justification for gun control. Steve Earle said during a performance that it was not written as a gun control song, but he now sings it as one.

  58. j.... k....

Waylon does this song justice.JUSTICE,WHAT A F ING JOKE!!!LOVE IT...

  59. S.... C....

Waylon does it  good but steve earle does it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better I think

    S.... C....

    allways late

    S.... C....

    Steven Carrier
I like the Cash version but its a great song always

    S.... C....

Steven Carrier ARE YOU nuts nuf said

    S.... C....

    compared to who?

    S.... C....

steve earle ROCKS THIS SONG ....WAY BETTER THAN ANY OTHER VERSION

  60. R.... C....

Who the hell ever said Jennings did western swing? Schmuck!

  61. D.... ....

Thanks for sharing, good times to thee!

  62. t.... ....

It's kind of funny and odd. Waylon said he really didn't like some of the songs and how they were put together for the "Will The Wolf Survive" album. It was his first venture with MCA after having departed with RCA. He rarely played these songs live later in life. It's the same with Johnny Cougar (Mellencamp). He has stated that he thought his first few albums were full of a lot of fluff and silly. How ironic that it is these albums and songs that we all love to listen to.

  63. k.... ....

Best version I've ever heard! I'm a big Waylon fan so I may be a little biased!

    k.... ....

Well I'm not a Waylon fan. I'm a Rock/Metal fan. But I can say this is one of the best covers I've ever heard. Makes the original sound so lifeless

    k.... ....

I've heard several versions, including Steve Earle's and Bob Segar's, and this is my favorite, too.

    k.... ....

    hands down best version!!!

    k.... ....

I like the johnny cash version better both are great though

  64. N.... D....

love steve earls version best...the bass and all!he performed it in sudbury 2 years ago too!!

  65. T.... ....

RARELY do I like re-makes - I knew of Steve Earl's version first on the Copperhead Road album, and stumbled on Waylon's version quite by accident (saw it in a movie about a female undercover agent) - and just loved immediately how Waylon did this........I'm honestly in a quandary which version I love most, as I wore out the Copperhead road album.

    T.... ....

I was trying to remember the name of the movie that your mentioned about a female FBI agent starring Debra Winger back in the late 1980s...but yes, they played this song at the end of the movie...this is the version I like the best too.

    T.... ....

Yup, you have the correct movie - wish I could remember the name of it. Debra Winger....and what's the actor's name? He played in The Big Chill and was Uncle Jim Vance in the History Channel's Hattfields and McCoys.....

    T.... ....

@TheBunnyist I think the movie you are trying to remember is Betrayed

    T.... ....

The Highwaymen did a great cover of it good too.

  66. d.... ....

I love Waylon... but Ray Benson/Asleep at the Wheel rule Western swing.

  67. t.... ....

    best version ever!!!

  68. L.... R....

    i love this one!

  69. d.... ....

Made BY Earle, so yeah, written for himself to perform.

  70. l.... c....

hm i could see earl singin this now that i read the description. almost like it was made for him......

  71. 3.... ....

  73. j.... w....
