Waylon Jennings - Six White Horses Lyrics

Come here and look through the window over he
Open up the shatters tell me watch you see
Was that his knock that I heard at the door
Or is it six white horses coming down the road.

Come here and touch me and say that it's all right
You know that to my eyes the days are as the the nights
Read again the letter that tells me that he's gone
To hell with the fighting I want my son home.

I taught him to fish and I taught him to be strong
Taught him that killing any man is wrong
But tomorrow in battle I'd run to where he stood
If the help of a blind man do any good.

Last night I went to this room for a while
I touched all the things that he used as a child
I rock the cradle where he used to lay
I'd found these tin soldiers and threw them away.

Come here and look through the window over he
Open up the shatters tell me watch you see
Was that his knock that I heard at the door
Or is it six white horses coming down the road...

Waylon Jennings Six White Horses Comments
  1. J.... O....

No one since or before ever came close to Waylon.
Greatest voice country music ever had.

  2. S.... A....

My favorite song of Waylon's many many great ones!

  3. t.... ....

This is Bobby Bond's BIO, he wrote this song. Read the comments (2) below from Robert Dant, as he was with Bobby Bond when he wrote this song. https://alancackett.com/bobby-bond

  4. t.... ....

People, People, this song is about the Civil War, not wars or conflicts from other countries and it's written by Bobby Bond about a blind man's struggle with the death of his son from battle in the Civil War. Bobby Bond wrote many many ballads for many of stars. He and Robert Dant worked together and had a duo at one time. Check Robert Dant's comment's below (2), as he was with Bobby Bond when he wrote this song.

    t.... ....

was it the knock on the door or was it Six White Horses coming down the road, is the question in the blind man's head. The hearse would be pulled by 6 white horses.

  5. B.... D....

Bobby Bond wrote this song + another one Waylon did called "If you're goin' girl'. a beautiful song worth your time to hear. 6 white horses is about a blind man's reflection on his son fighting in the civil war-I know this because I was with him when he wrote it!

    B.... D....

Bob that is truly amazing! To be there when he wrote this is cool. To have that connection is great. It's an amazing song! What did Bobby Bond say was Waylon's response when he brought him those songs? Any extra tidbits you can share.

    B.... D....

But tomorrow in battle I’d run to where he stood if the help of the blind man would be any good. Really good lyric,

  6. D.... H....

  8. T.... ....

I know they are getting ready to tear it up on that big stage in the sky...turn it up Hoss~!

  9. C.... M....

I love this song! It's so dynamic!I heard this song for the first time at the age of 14. Part of me was crying and the other part was defiant! I don't completely understand why, but, I am not going to try to guess what God's plan for me is!

  10. k.... h....

This is the song that made me a Waylon Jennings fan!

  11. S.... S....

    Love it!

  12. E.... N....

Well CB, it appears that you have info that I don't. All I know is that Waylon is a Force. IMO he and Willy settled this with the song "Write your own Songs." I was told that when RCA told him that he had to sing the songs they said on the album Waylon & Me, he pointed to a gold record of Willie's and said, Do you want to lose me too?

  13. J.... S....

This is my absolute favorite song I have ever listen to it reminds me of my grandpa that passed away from alteimers. He was a smart strong man and I'll always miss him.

  14. J.... ....

do you see the degenerates add hahhaha

  15. B.... D....

my dear friend ,co-writer & duo with me wrote this incredible song, about a blind man worried about his son in the civil war. bobby, if u read this PLEASE call me 931 670 6643

  16. K.... T....

This is a great song. Waylon had a wonderful voice!!!!!!!

  17. L.... R....

    What was it!?

  18. a.... w....

I love all of Waylon Jennings songs.don't care what any one says. He takes his time in singing his songs.

  19. m.... ....

I can never listen to enough of Waylon or Patsy Cline.  What voices they all have.  This is an awesome song.

  20. C.... ....

Produced by Danny Davis.  I wonder how Waylon felt about this record.  Waylon was never happy with the producers RCA was using on him post Chet, namely Danny Davis & Ronnie Light.  He felt they did not understand him and that they were using instrumentation he didn't want.  Not too mention they would not let him use his own band.  So, a record like this is very interesting in retrospect.  So many people love this record and Waylon delivers an emotional & heartfelt performance.   Would Waylon have recorded it different had he been producing himself?  No harpsichord?  There is just so much to study and try to understand with Waylon's recording career.  A recording artist of such incredible depth.  For me, the kick drum and brush work make this recording.

    C.... ....

Why would they use a harpsichord on this song anyway? Must have been in fashion at the time in the 60's in modern music. I don't mind it but I can totally see Waylon's point. It doesn't suit him or his style. Heck it didn't really match the song's subject matter either. Good point you made bringing this up by the way.

    C.... ....

Yeah, maybe it was a 60's thing. I know Chet always said they were just trying to make records that would sell. And, I guess this happened sometimes at the expense of the artists vision. I don't know. But I do like this recording a lot and the LP it came from as a whole, even if it wasn't 'outlaw'.

    C.... ....

    @CBS67
I think pretty much everything Waylon did was great. It was a great body of work really and one of the best in American music history for a solo artist.

    C.... ....

Agreed, but to hear him do Billy Joe's Old Five and Dimer is just per gold and reminds me so much of Texas.

    C.... ....

Honestly this song puts his voice on display more than any of his other songs. Short of , perhaps, 'Only Daddy That Will Walk The Line'.

  21. S.... F....

This is such a memorable song, delivered with great depth of feeling and understanding by this superb singer. I guess that the song refers directly to the American civil war; but it has a universal application so that it speaks to everyone everywhere and all times whose sons have gone out to war and also to those of us who have sons and can only imagine what it might be like for the blind father in the song who knows not what may have happened to his son and feels anxious, angry and helpless.
There is another version of this song by a little known though great group from the 1960's called Hearts and Flowers which is also really excellent. It is available on an album called 'The Complete Hearts and Flowers' and is worth hearing. I don't know who wrote the song, though. Correct me if I am wrong,  I don't think that it was either Waylon or the guys from Hearts and Flowers.

  22. 9.... ....

Anyone else find it odd that the son's room would still have a cradle and tin soldiers in it, if he is old enough to be in the army?

    9.... ....

    +9401productions
not really, limited space combined with not getting rid of perfectly good stuff that could go to use for the grandkid if one happens, and not having a storage space = a childs room retaining items from younger days as the child grows and even leaves home

  23. p.... ....

    Waylon Remember...

  24. T.... ....

God just leaned back in that big ole chair and said, " Waylon play it for me one more time"!

  25. K.... ....

Well look at how the government keeps the schools down and force "In the Box" thinking, best way to keep a country under thumb is by keeping the masses ignorant.

  26. C.... S....

Thank you samhain. Finally, someone is telling the public the truth! If only they will listen.

  27. T.... P....

Waylon was a true original. They don't make 'em like him and Willie anymore!

  28. C.... ....

    I'm thankful for your son.

  29. b.... b....

son is 2 months into his second deployment to afghanistan.. want him home.. this song is spot on with the emotions that go with this.. miss my son

  30. j.... ....

That song is right on the mark, 45 years after it was recorded. Thanks for posting it, the words give me chills.

  31. j.... a....

I KIND OF AGREE WITH U SAMHAIN 1967 COOL NAME BY THE WAY HOW CAN U FIGHT A RELIGON THE ONLY THING THAT HAPPENS IS THEY JUST GET MORE RESOLVE TO FIGHT FOR THEIR GOD OR GODS IT WILL NEVER END

  32. b.... s....

    WELL SAID!

  33. L.... ....

We've been saying that in Canada for years lol

  34. O.... T....

    Thanks alot, wow.

  35. C.... D....

I love this song. Thanks for posting. Actually samhain it is about the flag. As the flag stands so stands this Country. However, the wars in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan iwere not about freedom for America. There were about sticking our noses is others fight for freedom. We should not have ever interfered and now we have lost thousands of our own for nothing except to do what a certain president wanted.

    C.... D....

Actually it's about the Civil War. The hearse would be pulled by 6 white horses. I was With Bobby Bond when he wrote it.

  36. s.... ....

Oh a retarded jarhead... I should've known... what's wrong, did you suffer from DU poisoning or something? Killing Iraqi's, Afghani's or whatever is not providing freedom to any American... what you're doing is murdering and subjugating other peoples because you're too goddamned stupid to educate yourself. I hope you meet an IED because in these times, America can't afford to have losers like you running around.

    s.... ....

samhain1967 your a piece of shit at least he was brave enough to fight for our country. How about you go and fight you fucking coward little bitch you can't you would probably piss your pants you little bitch

    s.... ....

samhain1967 I sincerely hope that after 7 years you could possibly go back and reflect on this comment, and realize how wrong this statement was!

  37. s.... ....

Really? Are you that retarded? The Pledge of Allegiance is based in nationalism, not patriotism. Nationalists is what the Nazi's were and seems so are some foolish Americans like yourself. A patriot is someone who has the guts to stand up fight for right, truth, and justice... even if it's against their own government. America is founded on ideals, not a fucking pledge to a flag, you dope.

  38. B.... M....

AS our parents did for us ........Freedom is not free , it takes a chosen few to fight for us and God help those that have been chosen,my son ,your son our sons they chose and we chose and God will choose,my belief in him the Corp and my guide will see them through.I begrudge no man for his lack of faith ,mine is strong in The Father and MY Corp..

  39. B.... M....

I pledge allegiance to the flag !!!!! Tis ours not to reason why,but to do........

  40. d.... ....

The Gov't is trying to bring in the New world Order real hard. They are using the U.S. troops to fight afar to kick ass and humble those people down. Meanwhile they will use the U.N. troops to take our guns and humble us down so they can take all of our rights away and have total controll over the whole world.Wake Up and See what is going on.

  41. s.... ....

I to served in the US Army back in the 80's but seeing what has gone on since then, I wouldn't allow my children to serve. If I happened to be in the Army today, I'd be serving my time at Ft. Leavenworth breaking big rocks into little rocks because what our country does today is wrong. Remember the words of James Madison...If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy. Today service men and women need to refuse to fight illegal and immoral wars.

  42. F.... ....

That is a family to be proud of. I thank you and your children for your service to our country and pray for their safe return. And to all the active and veteran soldiers I would like to thank you all as well. God bless you, your families and our country.

  43. b.... b....

Just got word my son will deploy again to Afghanistan... I want this war over.. To hell with the fighting I want my son home.. Pray for our troops and that God will bring them home soon..

  44. T.... ....

In 2005/2006...all 4 of us were on Active Duty and in Iraq....that was a long deployment...I was in Fallujah, one was in Tal-afar, one on border out to the northwest....one in Mosul....well that was then and this is now...Thank God for all our safe return...now they are out there doing what we do best...giving it their all...

  45. b.... b....

I also have 2 sons active duty.. army and marines... both went to afghanistan. This song definatley tugs at the heart... I can feel and relate to his anxiety and fear.

  46. T.... ....

This song will rip your heart out...30 years in the Marine Corps, with 2 sons in Army and daughter in Air Force and they all have deployed to Iraq and A-stan...set here at the house many a night with a beer in hand listening to this song...praying for one thing - Please God bring my children home...

    T.... ....

TEXASGUNFIGHTER all our Nation salute all our braves who fought and still fight for our Beloved America....
    Howdy......
