Waylon Jennings - People Up In Texas Lyrics

To the people up in Texas
It's the nearest thing to heaven here on earth
The lifestyle up in Texas
Is just go on out and live for all it's worth.

Where the men are all men
And the ladies there are born with ways to please
And the people up in Texas
Think that the rest of all the world is over seas.

You don't need no one to tell you
When you cross that Texas line
The air starts smellin' sweeter
And the water tastes like wine.

The sun is always shining
So it's seldom ever cold
People just grow up there
Never old.

You don't need no one to tell you
When you cross that Texas line
The air starts smellin' sweeter
And the water tastes like wine.

The sun is always shining
So it's seldom ever cold
People just grow up there
Never old.

The people up in Texas
It's the nearest thing to heaven here on earth
The lifestyle up in Texas
Is just go on out and live for all it's worth.

Where the men are all men
And the ladies there are born with ways to please
And the people up in Texas
Think that the rest of all the world is over seas.

Yeah, the people up in Texas
Think that the rest of all the world is over seas...

Why did he write the lyric as "up" in Texas? Was he in Mexico when he wrote the song? I don't get it, and I was born in Texas. If he were in one of the contiguous states, I suppose he could use the term but it would only make sense as "over" in Texas...pretty difficult to be south of Texas in the U.S. unless you're in southern Florida. I searched for an answer in his Wikipedia bio as well as just Googling in general, to no avail.

    I have no idea.

People from Texas usually place Texas next to heaven, heaven is UP so I bet that's why he says up in Texas.

    K.... N....

Northern Texas, which is where he was born.

Well sir I commend you on having a great taste in Old American Country music! Waylon Jennings was the boss in cuntry in his time. I have heard that Old country has a place in W Europe in places like Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweeden, and Norway. That's great news. Modern day country in America is a sad joke now. It's too pop! The embodiment of true country soul has been sold for profit.
