Waylon Jennings - Love Of The Common People Lyrics
Livin' on free food, tickets
Water in the milk from the hole in the roof
Where the rain came through
What can you do? hmm
'Cause she doesn't have a dress without a patch
For the party to go
Oh, but you know she'll get by.
She is livin' in the love of the common people
Smiles from the heart of the family man
Daddy's gonna buy her a dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love her just as much as she can, she can.
It's a good thing you don't have the bus fare
And you'd lose it in the snow on the ground
A walking to town to find a job.
Trying to keep your hands warm
But the hole in your shoe let the snow come through
And it chills to the bone, boy
You'd better go home where it's warm.
Where you can live in the love of the common people
Smiles from the heart of the family man
Daddy's gonna buy her a dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love her just as much as she can, she can.
Livin' on dreams ain't easy
But the closer the knit the tighter the fit
And the chills stay away
You take 'em in stride family pride.
You know that faith is your foundation
And with a whole lotta love and a warm conversation
And plenty of prayer
Making you strong where you belong.
Where you can live in the love of the common people
Smiles from the heart of the family man
Daddy's gonna buy her a dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love her just as much as she can, she can...

Waylon Jennings Love Of The Common People Comments
My birthday 🎂. July 27.
My wife and I must have danced to this song over 100 times. Love Waylon's music so easy to dance to, great beat and feel. This song has key changes that are awesome. Just love listening to it. I have a grandson who plays guitar, I asked him to learn this song. He said Waylon had so much talent and was so good he had cords that hardly no can play. Waylon was so good! Thanks, Waylon for the great music!
waylon did better than anyone
Epic :')

Water in the milk
From a hole in the roof
Where the rain came through
What can you do, hmmm?
Tears from your little sister
Crying because she doesn't have
A dress without a patch
For the party to go
But you know she'll get by
'Cause she's living in
The love of the common people
Smiles from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
And she can
It's a good thing
You don't have a bus fare
It would fall through the hole
In your pocket and you'd lose it
In the snow on the ground
You got to walk into town
To find a job
Tryin' to keep your hands warm
When the hole in your shoe
Let the snow come through
And chill you to the bone
Somehow you'd better go home
Where it's warm
Where you can live in
The love of the common people
Smile from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
And she can
Living on a dream ain't easy
But the closer the knit
The tighter the fit
And the chills stay away
'Cause we take 'em in stride
For family pride
You know that faith
Is in your foundation
With a whole lot of love
And a warm conversation
But don't forget to pray
It's makin' it strong
Where you belong
And we're living in
The love of the common people
Smiles from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
And she can
Yes, we're living in
the love of the common people
smile's from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
Living in
The love of the common people
Smiles from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
Living in
The love of the common people
smile's really hard
On a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
And she can
Waylon is a good singer he has sung it very good but to be honest I prefer the cover of Paul Young, I didn't know that the song of Paul Young was a cover. I grew up with the cover of Paul Young.
I love this version, but then it was the first version I'd heard.
the Navajo loved it
Really good songs will often sound good recorded in many different genres. To me, Paul Young's version sounds like a fusion between this and Nicky Thomas's 1970 reggae version, which was a big hit in the UK. Stiff Little Fingers' 1982 punk version is also good.
What a disappointment - for 34 years I thought it was a Paul Young original.
I don't know what to think now.
I'm really duzzeled.
Jack the Thriller What difference does it make? Enjoy both versions. Paul is a gifted songwriter who has written other great material.
my dad worked for his niece who owned a grocery store/bar with her rancher husband n the late evenings while I hung out n the bar area shooting pool with the cowboys til closing time on weekends. Every weekend the cowboys would descend upon the bar which was very popular. Around 10pm, with everyone drunk, sum one would play this song on the jukebox & it never failed. Ppl would rush to the dance floor and a fight would break out. Before u knew it fists and boots would b flying inside & outside. While n a faraway place no one knew called VietNam our young men & women were dying. 🇺🇸
beautiful ♥
Listening to my parents' records when I was a child in the 70s. This was one of my favorites.
Wow does this song bring back memories! First time I remember hearing it was in 1969 by Ed Ames. I liked it so much that I went to the nearest record store and purchased his RCA Victor LP album titled by this same song.
Ed may be Native American but not sure about that. He did an excellent job playing the part of Mingo on the Daniel Boone TV series and had a wonderfully rich singing voice. I really like Waylon's version too.
first time i heard this was by the collins kid when i was in Tiawan in 1969
A native from NM told me it was the national anthem of the Navajo people so I guess u could call it the Love of the Navajo People too
The word Navajo actually means common person.
Love this song by him.
pure legend
love this song!
Those that love you.
In 1967 I had met Waylon in a few night clubs In Phx. where he was very popular. I was working for U-Haul rentals and he had bought a horse trailer from us. (because of all the locking compartments) and was on his way to Nashville, TN . to see if he could make it with the big boys.(and did he) I hooked the trailer up to his station wagon I think It was an olds or Buick. Anyway he needed two side mirrors and I told him that would be another $120. plus tax. By now he was counting pennies plus he hd a long way to go. I said hell you just spent $1600 with us you can have the mirrors. and of he and his men went. Then one day I have the radio on and they say now we have Waylon Jennings from Phx.AX. Doing Love of the common people. May the man rest in peace.

BLESS U RONALD !!!!
I live for these stories! 23 years old and a lifetime left to love Waylon
Waylon. His music got me out of some big depressive mode when EPA entered my life and screwed up this family with news that we were living in a highly toxic hazardous waste area where my kids shouldn't be playing. I got my balls on and fought like hell to get my family the hell outta there and I did it. Twenty one years living there then twenty one months later I got us moved out of the toxicity environment to ten miles in the opposite wind direction. Waylon brought a steady calm, when I needed solace and strength to go forward.
Music. The man. Waylon. Thank you ... Now rest in peace forever.
Waylon is buried in the Mesa City Cemetary….I just saw Jessi perform again today. Sweet lady.
I had no idea the Paul Young song was a cover. Brilliant!
it's weird to realise all of his songs were.
yollam Nicky Thomas too
No contest though is it?
yollam even me
Wow! Great!
Photo is what he looked like when I went to ASU and he played 5 nights a week at JDs on Rural Rd--$1 cover and there was a rock band in the basement.
.
Go home? Where it's warm and they love you? What is that...
Hear the Greatest rendition of this song by Joe Dolan, on You Tube!
I grew up with this one
Great song a fav of the Navajo
You got it right😂
Good song Waylon sing it so good
no he didn't crystal you were lied to lol "Love of the Common People" is a folk ballad written and composed by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins
My cousin David Riley wrote this song. He will sing it today at family gatherings
I played drums for David Riley and the Western Hearts in the early 70's. Pleasanton, TX., Jourdanton, TX. Uvalde, TX. Poteet, TX. Los Angeles, TX. Carrizo Springs, TX. Pearsall, TX. and on and on. We played a lot of early Waylon Jennings songs. The song that I remember David writing was "Put the Bottle on the Table".
I still have one of his records w that song on it
A family member told me he wrote this song. So that's what I was going by. He still sings some w his daughter. But not like he use to.
I was privileged to be present in Gallup Cathedral High School Gym, a guest of Father Dunstan, back in the early 70s, to hear Waylon sing this to a Navajo gathering. They do not clap as we do, but you could have heard a pin drop. I, a Limey, was in tears.
Geoffrey Lane and he loved the Indians and they still adore him. Today its George Strait. Ask any Indian gal who is her fav country singer
and she'll inevitably will say George Strait
Waylon Jennings was #1 to the Navajos way back when. still love his songs , brings back lots if good memories.
Kevin bloody wilson
There's a old reggae version by Nicky Thomas. I wonder if the Navajo would dig that version too.
I was there at Cathedral for all his concerts as a younger teenager
Great song by ol Waylon and the boys!

As a punk rocker in the '80s I loved this song by Stiff Little Fingers. Didn't know then where it came from. Awesome song and love that it's been picked up by so many other musicians over the years.
me to didn´t know, first i listen the paul young version then stiff little fingers and the last one with joe strummer and the mezcaleros.
When I was a boy,I lived the part about "water in the milk where the hole in the roof let the rain get through." Recently, I was asked to sing a song as part of a charity talent show. I chose this one because of its message.
FANTASTIC SONG!!
love me some Waylon!!
This song was my first introduction to Waylon Jennings, back in the 60's.
