Waylon Jennings - Lorena Lyrics
The years creep slowly by, Lorena
The snow is on the grass again
The sun's low down the sky, Lorena
The frost gleams where the flowers have been
But the heart throbs on as warmly now
Oh, the sun can never dip so low
A-down affection's cloudless sky.
A hundred months have passed, Lorena
Since last I held that hand in mine
And felt the pulse beat fast, Lorena
Though mine beat faster far than thine
A hundred months...'twas flowery May
When up the hilly slope we climbed
To watch the dying of the day
We loved each other then, Lorena
More than we ever dared to tell
And what we might have been, Lorena
Had but our loving prospered well
But then, 'tis past, the years have gone
I'll not call up their shadowy forms
I'll say to them, "Lost years, sleep on
Sleep on, nor heed life's pelting storms."
The story of the past, Lorena
Alas! I care not to repeat
The hopes that could not last, Lorena
They lived, but only lived to cheat
I would not cause e'en one regret
To rankle in your bosom now
"For if we try we may forget"
Were words of thine long years ago.
Yes, these were words of thine, Lorena
They are within my memory yet
They touched some tender chords, Lorena
Which thrill and tremble with regret
'Twas not the woman's heart which spoke
Thy heart was always true to me
A duty stern and piercing broke
The tie which linked my soul with thee.
It matters little now, Lorena
The past is in the eternal past
Our hearts will soon lie low, Lorena
Life's tide is ebbing out so fast
There is a future, oh, thank God!
Of life this is so small a part
'Tis dust to dust beneath the sod
But there, up there, 'tis heart to heart.

One of the better versions Waylon had one hell of a voice
My grandmother's name was Lorena. I believe she was named after this song. Waylon does a beautiful job singing it.
History states that Lorena was banned by leaders on both sides because, upon hearing it, the soldiers would abandon their weapons and return home.
There are many versions, all of them simply beautiful. Waylon does it well, as does Johnny Cash.
Could listen to this every night. Beautiful way to close the day
Bed -rock country. 1858. Most loved song of the civil war along with "Home Sweet Home. Waylon captures the sadness.
Beautiful song sung by a great singer.I've followed Waylons career ever since his Buddy Holly days...old friend(s) we sure do miss you,but you ain't missed a thing.
Certainly beautiful. Thanks Waylon.

True, but like he says in the beginning he doesn't know it, nice picking though.
Love this song. You can find this song on his CD #1 Nashville Outlaw
The CD that this recordings is off is called " The Restless Kid-Live at JD's and is an absolute gem. Waylon was and is the best. Cheers, John C.
I have always been a fan of Waylon and this has to be the most beautiful version of this lovely song. Thank you so much.
countryfan.
Written in the 1850's by a spurned lover it became the # 1 hit in the civil war.. It got so the reb officers banned it cause the troops would get so homesick they'd desert. Waylon does it with real feeling, good slow tempo and a great voice!

As far as I know, Hank Williams is credited with the new lyrics (at least it says so on my Early Waylon cd) Anyone know if Hank recorded it himself??
