Waylon Jennings - Games People Play Lyrics

Oh, the games people now
Every night and every day now
Never meanin' what they say now
Never sayin' what they mean, oh no.

Well, they wile away the hours
In their ivory towers
Till they're covered up with flowers
In the back of a black limousine, oh yeah.

Lotten da la da da da
Lotten da la a dee de dee
Talkin' bout you and me
And the games people play, oh now.

Well, we make one another cry
Break a heart then we say goodbye
Cross our hearts and we hope to die
That the other one's to blame.

But neither one will ever give in
So we gaze at an eight by ten
Thinkin' bout the things that might have been
And it's a dirty rotten shame, yes it does.

People walkin' up to ya
Shouting glory hallelujah
Well, they wanna sock it to ya
In the name of the Lord.

Gonna teach you how to meditate
Read your horoscope and cheat your fate
Furthermore to hell with hate
Come on and get on board.

Lotten da la da da da
Lotten da la a dee de dee
Talkin' bout you and me
And the games people play, oh now.

Look around and tell me what you see
What's happened to you and me
God give me the serenity
To remember who I am.

'Cause you've given up your sanity
For your pride and your vanity
Turn your back on humanity
'Cause you don't give a do de dee.

Lotten da la da da da
Lotten da la a dee de dee
Talkin' bout you and me
And the games people play, oh now...

  8. N.... A....

I love this song! This fits our society then and now! Waylon could put words in a song together because he sang about his experiences.

  9. c.... ....

I love Both....I think of different things with each song...

  10. P.... B....

Cmon Waylon at least get the words to the song you’re butchering right ?

    P.... B....

  14. S.... C....

    Love this song

  15. D.... S....

    Looove him

  16. G.... L....

Great Waylon, but over-produced before he got free. I'd shoot the 'back-up' singers. Joe South is also a hero of mine.

    G.... L....

Wasn't South a great writer? Love his work, too!

  17. B.... W....

This is a smoother, more-relaxed version of the song, but it's my second favorite. South's version is 3rd favorite. My fave is Freddy Weller. But all respect to Waylon.

  18. R.... T....

As good as South’s version. Waylon could make any song sound great. Love the rhythm.

  19. M.... D....

Check out the Tesla version of the same song.  The Tesla version of this song came out in 1994 on the Bust a Nut album.

  20. L.... ....

Two Great Ones.....Now Gone...All the Good Music is Gone Now........

  21. C.... 2....

    Show de bola está música.....

  22. J.... R....

I think Billy Joe Shavers might be helping him with this one.

  23. P.... R....

Joe South was one hell of a good writer. Shame about him. Waylon. Waylon. Still in love with ya', darlin'

  24. L.... ....

Listen to the words and tell me what the Hell has changed in 50 years since this song was written....

  25. D.... J....

Reminds me of old Jim on his porch playing

  26. M.... R....

Joe South is my favorite on ,this song Waylon J. might sing another song by Joe like Sunday morning coming down, besides Joes vesion is from my youth, and it takes me back in memories

  27. B.... M....

Hank Williams JR dose a wonderful job of the song aswell

  28. C.... ....

One of the realest humans to ever walk this earth 🌏 One good man

  29. J.... B....

I love Waylon but I generally do not enjoy his covers. There are of course exceptions like Sloop John B--which is a not exactly a cover since the Beach Boys covered it themselves (so it's not even clear that Waylon was covering the Beach Boys per se rather just singing his version of a song that has existed since the 1920s). This is not even close to Joe South's version.

  30. B.... M....

Hank Waylon and who did the original.

    Love this song,

  35. J.... C....

Waylon is the best, my wife hates his music. I know how to keep her out of the garage. Waylon helps me out. Lol

    J.... C....

I have friend who hates Waylon, not so much because of his music, but because she says he is a disgusting male chauvinist, to which I retort that he wasn't a chauvinist, he was a man's man, an alpha male who didn't put up with crap...I don't understand how any one could hate his music, but to each there own.

    J.... C....

Really cool comment. I wish I could of seen him live.

    J.... C....

I would have divorced her years ago.. You don't hate Waylon!

    J.... C....

Yea man my wife says its depressing I like to call it soul music

  36. V.... W....

Teddie488... Did you ever hear the Freddie Weller version of this from the late 60's? Was nice. Was faster and peppier.

    V.... W....

1969 hit #2 on the Country charts, Freddy's 1st and biggest Country hit !!! Interesting note bot Freddy and Joe South grew up in Atlanta, GA. They were part of The Lowery Group and an huge musical influence that came out of Atlanta during the 60's and 70's. Mac Davis was also part of this group from Atlanta. According to Mac Davis, Freddy Weller played him a guitar riff that Joe South had shown him that helped him finish writing In The Ghetto for Elvis. (other sources confirm the story and the riff was a slowed down version one from Joe's song Children... Take a listen) If you like Joe's work check out the FB page Joe South - I knew You When

  37. G.... M....

This song sums up politicians to a T, they speak with forked tongue.

  38. T.... S....

Joe South was an awesome songwriter... a DJ in Atlanta... thanks for sharing this

  39. P.... A....

    love this version

  40. S.... P....

40 years of Waylon is never enough, from one cowboy to another he is the best.

    S.... P....

    S.... P....

  41. W.... I....

He is the greatest, no question!!

  42. J.... B....

Tesla did a really good version in 94.

  43. J.... J....

I just listened to both. This one for the firs time. It's hard to pick . Both are outstanding .

  44. D.... ....

  50. D.... D....

The. Games. People. Play. So. True.

    D.... D....

yes the games people play is very true and it often hurts and and hard to get over some you always have close to mind

  51. D.... K....

Why make up your mind - enjoy them both!  They're both Great!

    D.... K....

DimensionX Kitty belive me i do enjoy both versions. With a glass of Jim and a smoke. Have a wonderful day dimension Kitty. And a better weekend

    D.... K....

There's so many good versions, I won't try to list them all. Just search the song title alone when you have an hour or so to listen to them all. A song so good, it's hard to do it wrong. :)

  52. J.... C....

Waylon rocked it. - he's my fav. But. The other is god too

    J.... C....

Brlieve me the OTHER sure as hell ant no GOD!! He may think so LMAOFFffff 👋 👋

  53. T.... ....

I don't know, but I don't believe Waylon was around when some 'producer' added those appalling back-up singers. Ruined an otherwise fine track. Money for Joe though. He was runnin' wild in Nashville before Waylon and wrote and sang some great songs. Also handy with an in-door motorbike (allegedly)

    T.... ....

    Joe South..haven't heard better

  54. g.... ....

    Games, indeed.

  55. d.... ....

II'm sorry but I prefer Waylon's version; he puts in more feelings like he does with all of his songs. He is the best. The other one is also good but this is for me. What a great voice. He was truly blessed with an excellent voice, what a talent. Lucky Jessi! He loved her dearly you could tell.

  56. a.... ....

This version has a lot more emotion than the South version, I like them both and the song is amazing.

  57. s.... c....

First time heard this song by Waylon, very nice I like this version as well as Joe South's

  58. 1.... ....

Ohh, what true words!! Joe South really got it right in this song!!

  59. T.... ....

Great song, thanks Waylon, thanks joe

  60. J.... r....

Anything he ever did seemed to undo anything anyone else did. I liked the original too but oh well, now there is Waylon. He was simply the best. Miss you Hoss.

  61. k.... ....

Waylon and Tesla Are both good, but I think The Georgia Satellite is better.

  62. J.... C....

This is nice. Very nice. The fact I've heard the Great Joe South sing this his way about a trillion times before hearing this today really weighs his version in my favor. Nonetheless, Waylon really nails this.

  63. M.... H....

    Great version!

  64. s.... ....

@83JD4850 I agree with ya.....Joe South's rendition not even him singing it but the music is sadder unlike waylon's which is more like get up and dance saying people play so might as well go on and be happy, where joe south is like its sad to see people playin the games. I like how you compare it you were always on my mind....cuz myself being an Elvis fan, Elvis's version doesnt even match Willie Nelson.

  65. Z.... W....

Check out the King Curtis and Duane Allman instrumental version!

  66. M.... T....

    House brought me there! :P

  67. v.... ....

    beautiful

  68. B.... ....

God Bless Waylon Jennings....he is sorely missed. He had one of the best voices in all of country music history.

  69. c.... ....

    "Serenitry" [sic]?!!

  70. K.... S....

Whoop whoop !! If Waylon took the time to record it, play it live or sing it on TV it was/is always worth my time. Shore miss ya hoss.

  71. r.... c....

Waylon was the greatest altough Robert Plant Is our local singer and the late john Bonham was a friend old waymore was KING

  72. s.... ....

Waylon could sing a parking ticket and make it sound great.

  73. J.... B....
