Waylon Jennings - A Long Time Ago Lyrics
I don't look the way the average cowboy singer looks
I'll admit I've taken things I never should of took
You can read a different story in a lot of different books
But even then you won't really know
How it was a long time ago
Women have been my trouble since I found out they weren't men
In spite of that I stopped and took a wife now and then
They built their fences high but they couldn't hold me in
I was born with a fire down below
And I learned to fly a long time ago
Don't ask me about the years I spent out in the rain
About the ones I spent in love or the ones I spent insane
Don't ask me who I gave my seat to on that plane
I think you already know
Me and ol' Willie, lordy we've been sold and bought
I guess y'all heard about some kind of system that we fought
We ain't the only outlaws just the only ones they caught
They tried to run us off but Willie's slow
I quit running a long time ago

how can you comment on this mess ? he went from the best to nothing , destroyed by Willie Nelson
I believe that his peak was around in 1975, when he recorded "dreaming my dreams", but he kept class until the end.
My kids, now grown, will never know nor understand how it was a long time ago
Waylon was supposed to fly on the plane that Ritchie Valens the Big Bopper and a couple others flew on but instead of waylon going he gave his seat to the Big Bopper The plane went down in case any of you didn't know. Killing everyone aboard. Don McLean released a song dedicated to the crash called American Pie. The day the music died.
Waylon carved his mark on my soul ... at least once a day I think about him wish he woulda lived forever! RIP Hoss !!
Gotta. Luv Waylon miss him also
I'm sorry, but one has to be a dumbtard for not liking Waylon "Hoss" Jennings.
"I was born with a fire down below", absolutely Hoss, absolutely.
Wow! What a song!!! My babies ages 2 and 4 they are singing to it, and dancing... Little freaken Mexican/American country hillbilly delux. Waylon will always stick on their minds, and when they grow up, they will remember your songs, and will keep on playing your music til they get old. They make my day... Love you Waylon... Keep playing your music.
47 men sit to piss.

Don't ask me who I gave my seat to on that plane
26 people are h8ers
Love Waylon
Willie was to slow! 😂
True outlaw.just like hank 1, 2 &3, merle david, johnny and willie
Big boobs. Really big boobs.
how can a person give a thumbs down to such a song? answer: communism
@Mr.ManMakesLotsOfCan Guy my family is a family of biker we all had long hair and ling beards does that make my family liberals when they're all not(90% of my family)
@Josh Bates bruh waylon had it in the 70s tho. Very progressive and controversial, it's not about the hair, its about the clean cut conservative time period he was doing it in. So please stfu about your long hair.
@Mr.ManMakesLotsOfCan Guy c'mon there is no way , Waylon would be a left-Winger lmao. Not in today's world. Dems in the 60s were good people but 2010s totally domonic party. But whatever man I'm done talking about politics BRUH. Atleast you listen to waylon so you're still cool.
@Mr.ManMakesLotsOfCan orange man bad right? I can agree on that
LOL
@Mr.ManMakesLotsOfCan who cares. Frankly I don't give a rats furry ass if he was Republican, Democrat, or liberal that was his choice and I just like listening to his music
this song is about buddy holly
Holster_Law not just Buddy Holly, it's also talking about Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens
He actually gave his seat to the big bopper.
Well, one line is about buddy for sure...
Lol.. this song is not about buddy holly nor is there a line about him in the song
It's about his life story, buddy only 1 part, holy shit
0:51 That instrumental really flows along, he's a good picker!
Bruh I love waylons picking was always on the beat
"Don't ask me who I gave my seat to on that plane. I think you already know."
@SinkHollyWood I remember watching "Behind the Music" in 1999 "The Day the Music Died" and Waylon tells the story of Buddy learning of Waylon giving up his seat to the Big Bopper. Buddy says, "I hope your bus freezes...", and Waylon says, "Well, I hope your plane crashes!" I had chills... had never heard that story. Waylon went on to say, "It took me a LONG TIME to get over that." It's no wonder he drank and used drugs...Who wouldn't try anything to forget about the guilt?
@Hayden Salmonson nope it was the big bopper
That line gives me the chills
@Hayden Salmonson yep the big bopper.
I'm only 19 and love this more than most music today. thanks dad lol
Austin Cochran I'm 11 I listened to this form I can't remember and I love this guy
my daughter is 17 and loves Waylon because of me. her name is Lily Waylon
Gotta keep real country alive man, it's in bad shape
Damnit I love Waylon's music!
Fantastic songs,by Waylon Jennings, with good guitar, and drums, and fantastic sound system
Please, everybody, it's important that we keep the record straight. Waylon gave his seat to the Big Bopper. It's all well and accurately documented on Wiki on the Big Bopper page, on the Buddy Holley page, and on the "The Day the Music Died" page and probably other pages as well.
I was gonna say Christopher norris waylon gave his seat to big bopper not richie vallens cuz big bopper was ill buddy and richie were destined for that plane though sorry to say it was a small sacrifice because waylon proved to be one of the best of all time if it weren't for them we'd never have known the greatness of waylon
Kevin Coates that's true, but Waylon definitely had a pretty severe case of survivors guilt over that however
sorry to correct ya but Waylon gave up his seat to Ritchie Valens, because Ritchie came down with a cold so they figured it'd be better for Ritchie to get to a warm hotel in North Dakota where the next gig was. Sorry im just a huge Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Big Bopper fan.
I mean the Big Bopper got sick sorry I corrected myself.
Tommy Allsup did the coin flip with Ritchie... Waylon gave his seat to the Big Bopper.
^^This is correct.
buddy also told Waylon he hopes he freezes on the bus, and waylon told him he hopes his plane crashes....kinda fucked waylon up
Christopher Norris nope, Waylon gave up his seat to J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson because he had the flu
Ritchie Valens won a coin toss with the guitarist that was playing for Buddy Holly during that tour
what does he mean when he says "Don't ask me who I gave my seat to on that plane"
+Rasch Model Train Layouts this is wrong he gave his seat to the big bopper
He gave his seat to the Big Bopper.
he definitely gave it to buddy holly
wait I was wrong he was the bass player for buddy holly. he gave the seat to Richardson
Waylon gave his seat to JP Richardson (The Big Bopper). Buddy Holly told Waylon "i hope you freeze on that bus", Waylon replied "yeah well i hope your plane crashes". Something said in jest no doubt haunted him for years.
I heard this song in The Dukes of Hazzard episode Daisy's song
JamesimusPrime2798 he also Sang the theme from The Duke's of Hazzard, in addition to being The narrative "Balladeer"
the best
willie's slow
lol I think he wanted to say willies stoned
Y'all should check out a guy named Sturgill Simpson... Waylon reincarnated!
@Frank Wileyy thats awesome man, im gonna check out every song of them, i like this kinda music
If you like this kind of music, you will like every song.
For real. I listened to him a while back and was like this is Waylon Jennings reincarcinated.
@haden esmond reincarnated***
Sturgill is Sturgill, not Waylon but he is real good. Like Blackberry Smoke, you're never quite sure what you'll get next, but you know you will like it.
waylon jennings is the best!! hell yeah!!
Awesome song
Man!!! The dislike button should not be available on this one ... Waylon Sure is one of a kind .. I learned to fly a long time ago!!!
Mike Ward I agree. How is even possible not to love this? Waylon was the greatest!
waylon music is like no others great music
@***** yes i have to agree 100%

Sturgill Simpson reminds me of Waylon. I'll start listen to sturgill and will always end up here. God bless Waylon and Buddy
@Elias Ferguson nice
You made a difference Hoss ... R.I.P. !!!
people hitting "dislike" better have clicked it on accident...
johnny hirt ive done that
Like my pipe fitter always said.. "Anybody that don't like that can suck a dick.."
I've done that to.
Don't AK me who I gave my seat up to on that plane. I think you already know. I told you that a long time ago
Richardson
"I was born with a fire down below"...he didn't have to explain what he meant by that! :)
"Women have been my trouble since I found out they weren't men"...
I think Tompall Glaser was another one. Probably Guy Clark, Johnny Paycheck, Ray Wily Hubbard, too.
Late 70's. The cocaine years. Look at his eyes. Still my favorite C&W artist.
So true, he is saying hell, i had sex with your wife while I was high as a kite. But he is polite about it.
Hell yeah to that one
what did willie and waylon get caught doing and who are the other outlaws that didnt get caught cash kristofferson
FeiXenogears hank Williams jr, Johnny paycheck, George Jones, and lots of others. They started a movement against what was called the Nashville sound
"They tried to run us off but Willies slow", how do you not love that!
@TheGrandCapt ???
2 people must be Big Bopper fans.
@TheGrandCapt wtf
Waylon is awesome! Great song
the best parts of this song are the two lines:
Women been my trouble since i found out they weren't men
and They tried to run us off, but willies slow.
They bring humor yet reflection to the song that few artist could pull off.
"don't ask me who i gave my seat to on that plane".....
I wonder if you have Waylon's version of "The Days Of Sand And Shovels", from 1969?? If you've got it, see if you can post it.
One of his best thanks for adding this one!
i admitt that i have taken things that i ve never should have took,,, i like this one,, but this "things" he took, sure were worth the trip,, i understand what you ment waylon,, at least i think to understand... well what ever,, like this little things he kind of hides in his lyrics..
