Watson, Gene - Paper Rosie Lyrics

The sun goes down in Calvin county
Neon lights from an old beer sign
Shown through the window out on the sidewalk
As I walked in to pass the time
I looked around, sat down at a table
Ordered beef on rye and a glass of wine
And through the door came a little old lady
She was selling paper roses and they only cost a dime

Paper Rosie, paper Rosie
She sold you paper Roses
But they only cost a dime

Silver hair that's lost its' gold
Trembling hand as she passed the rose
Red Crepe paper, made nature's bouquet
Help a little old lady buy a rose today
I took the rose from her trembling hand
With eyes of age, she smiled and walked away
Like a breath of spring I could smell the rose
It came alive and I heard her say

Buy my Roses, pretty roses
They're only made of paper
But they only cost a dime

I went to look for her outside
A spray of roses lay by her side
The sky lit up and the choir sang
A thousand voices as the church bells rang

They sang Rosie (Rosie), paper Rosie (Rosie)
She sold you paper Roses
But they only cost a dime

Paper Rosie (Rosie), paper Rosie (Rosie)
She sold you paper roses
But they only cost a dime

  16. Mosthonest1 Jones

I love this song. It reminds me of my Mom. When I was a kid, my Mom made crate paper roses and made sprays to sell for Graves for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. She took orders for the Srays and Wreaths and all of us kids helped, 9 of us kids during WWll. She also went and stood outside the Beer Joints and sold roses to guys before they went in and when they came out. Mom sold her roses for a nickel each. They didn't have Plastic Roses back then, and Silk Roses were expensive. You couldn't buy the Sprays and Wreaths either. Mom made the Roses out of Crate Paper and dipped them in hot wax, shook the wax off, and stood them up in a large can to dry. She made all colors, and she made Daisy's also.

My grandfather was always my faverite person and he really loved these old songs. By the time I was five, I could sing 'em without breaking a sweat. I just recently found this song again and damn. If I wouldn't give it all to be sitting with him singing this song again. I've found out that it's the same way for many people. And for my friend, it's Linkin Park. But everyone has that one song that could make them cry. Never be to fast to diss someone's taste in music.

Here is a wild shot in the dark: back in 1981 I heard a song on the radio and all I can remember is part of a line from it. It goes like this "You're gonna need a big old broom to cover up your cheatin tracks, alcohol and a place to ball when she won't take you back" I've searched high and low on the internet: nothing. But I know there are probably 10 000 000 people with the answer. If you're one of them, fill me in please.

I've been reading the comments regarding Gene and the Country Music Hall of Fame. This goes for all entertainers that should be there and aren't from all those years ago when Country wasn't cool so to speak. The board of directors for the GOO, we used to call it had this blasted burr under their saddles, and the rules were the rules. Apparently they still stand. Gene and many more will finally get inducted. The same rules were against females and also Bluegrass females to even be recorded by a label. Keep in mind how long it took for Allison Krauss to break that bluegrass mold... I was very fortunate to interview Gene Watson when he was with Step One Records. I followed his career since his beginning. The man is incredible.

  75. Mookie Spindlehurst

Don't know how I missed out on this gem. Thanks for providing the name of the songwriter, Dallas Harms.
[I think the point of the lyric: She's selling paper roses but they only cost a dime would be better served and stated as....
....AND they only cost a dime, as the conjunction
BUT connotes contrast and a shade of negativity between the two sentences, whereas the conjunction AND connotes
    agreement and optimism.]

    Ruth Boykin

I loved the song , always have...couldn't care less about grammar, LOL

  76. William Odom

    Super original voice. 100.

I get so upset knowing Gene Watson is still not in the Country Music Hall of Fame. What a shame to country music and all the country musicians out there Each one should be ashamed for not fighting to get Gene in. We all know he has paid his dues and is totally one of the best country music performers and flawless singers there ever has been in Country music. He is long long overdue for this award.
