Waters, Roger - Flickering Flame Lyrics
When my neurons conspire
to direct my thoughts
Away from divorce
And competitive sports
Back to the place
then I
I shall be free
I shall be free
On a seesaw
In a strange land
The jackdaw sat
On the carindals hand
And the fiddlers played
And the planners planned
On a backseat
In a courtroom
Molly Malone sat with
Leopold bloom
'Till the police came down
With a new broom
And swept them clean
[Chorus]
Like Geronimo
Like Quinn the Eskimo
Like the Blackfoot
And Like the Arapaho,
Like Crazy Horse
I'll be the last one
To lay down my gun
And when the bell sounds for that final round
I'll be there
On the open road
In a bar room
A pickup band plays a new tune
When the coloured girl sings
I feel my heart boom
When a new song
Strikes the right note
When a clearing sky
Saves an old boat
When an insight
Strikes the mote
From mine own eye
[Chorus]
Just out of sight
Beyond the next range
I feel the heat
Of a flickering flame
On an African plain
By a thorn tree
My old friend Philippe
Is waiting for me
Que ce passe se passe
Whatever will be
WILL be
When a friend dies
And the tears rise
From that deep well
That never runs dry
And the women break their bracelets
And the men take their whiskey outside
In a petit theatre
on the rue St. Denis
The red velvet curtain
Draws back to reveal
The place where the dark side
Meets the angel and me
The angel in me
When my synapses pause
In thier quest for applause
When my ego lets go
Of my end of the bone
To focus instead
On the love that is precious to me
Then
I shall be free
I shall be free

I just got the CD "Flickering Flame" in the mail today. There where no lyrics so I found the song here w/lyrics first. I am flabbergasted. I cant believe with all the music of his that I know completely, I had never heard this song. Its one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Bravo, Roger.
demo 2001
You can feel his Levon Helm inspiration here. Love Waters and his brass balls. Fearless artist.
we shall be free

raşit sen misin?
We love you Dylan ! 🌹💙 #trueblue
Rip in paradise Dylan Rieder❤️
A lot of people mentioning Bob Dylan, but I think this sounds more like John Prine.
I think it sounds like classic Roger Waters.
Kyle Shumaker i agree
Love this Rog, a truely underated piece. Shine on old fella ;)
What real music is :)
Ben Culture,, your so right. That's why it made it so magical. I appreciated it for what it was. We all grow and evolve eh ( yeah, Sunday night I'm up still being stupid at 40 but you get my point) can you imagian how I'd of felt if he'd of been a c**t to me?? All those years of thinking he was the dogs bollocks wasted?? Ha. Anyway,, he was the dogs,,, completely. Remember hitting the phone box (no mobile was 2002) ringing my big brother who's responsible for my roger waters addiction, in Auzz and getting him out of bed. Call me a sad arse but when my body gives up and I'm laying in bed thinking of my happy days,, that day shall be there,,,shining.
muito bom, o cara é um mito
I love Roger's music, and will unquestionably buy his next album the day it is released. But I do not care for this song at all. I'm glad it's just a demo. I don't like Bob-Dylan-esque (or Leonard-Cohen-like) songs with just the three main chords. It doesn't matter how great the lyrics are, if all we hear are C, F, and G in first position. Likewise, even the best lyrics need a singable melody. I hope he and his band will rework the arrangement significantly.
+Ben Culture I don't know this sounds like a guy just showing himself with his words in the end that's what a lyricists does, happy, angry or what ever maybe it brings some peace to himself anyway I'm one who enjoyed I guess that's enough for me.
I completely disagree. I've always loved the simplest songs. The kind you can play sitting on the porch with just a guitar. Buy hey, that's just me.
Ben Culture
Agreed.
Except Bob Dylan has had some really memorable tunes. Blowing In The Wind, Tambourine Man, Like A Rolling Stone, to speak of a few.
A timeless masterpiece this is.
Yoda has wonderful musical tastes. :v
Remember seeing him play this at the Albert hall..about 2002..(maybe 2003)..then had the pleasure of meeting him after. You worry that if you ever get to talk to the person you've followed and admired all your teenage and adult life, they might actually turn out to be a prick ..he wasn't..he was a gentleman .
Lucky you!!!! :3
LUCKY YOU, indeed!
You probably would have gotten a different impression of Roger if you'd met him thirty, or even twenty, years earlier. As he himself said in 1980, " I don't like strangers coming up, like they know me -- I don't want to talk to strangers. When they do come up, my vibes say 'I don't want you around', so they don't over-stay their welcome."
The man seems to have changed completely. He has found a way to make a meaningful connection with a large audience. More importantly, he's grateful for his fans. For the first time in his career, he appears to relish performing onstage. The most obvious indication is how often he smiles and laughs in interviews nowadays. (And in and odd twist of fate, David Gilmour has somehow become the scowly one.)
Leaving Pink Floyd was the healthiest thing Roger Waters could have ever done for himself.
a loving light a flames our day the rush came over the oneness we all cant explain a mystery with a refridgerated unit we go thru changes with a cycle to breaking down liting up being a harmonised with pain and love is hard but a mans job to see help is always needed . Some where we have been just put out as hearts that once unified agains terror and became the rising suns of love ...s power ..
Yup, still really love this song: always will : )
yup all the bubblegum crap
I love this song so much. Quite easy to play the acoustic guitar too. Sounds to me like he says,'Feel my heart bloom' - like a flower : )
I feel my heart boom.....
I found this song reading a book "Pigs might fly:The Inside Story of Pink Floyd"by Mark Blake.Great stuff.
Same here, seriously. In a real way, I am glad this song is relatively unknown. It gives me a real sense of peace to listen to it and it would lose something to me if it were all over the place, ha.
I don't know about all you guys but I listen to this like everyday.
... WOW .. x
@benjinlocke I totally agree!
One of his best songs!
It is "Petit théâtre" (a little theatre) not "pied-à-terre" (foot on ground = small house or flat in town), hence the reference to the theatre curtain.
uaauuuu!!!! beautiful song...
Roger Waters channels Bob Dylan ???? interesting...
What really makes me sad is that this video hasn't blown up with views. sigh...Which gangster rapper shot the appreciation for great music to death?
Roger Waters is amazing, I love his solos. Wow this song and specially the guitar solo following the chorus makes me orgasm. ( in my ear and I'm not exaggeratin)
