Waterboys, The - Custer's Blues Lyrics

Well you look just like General Custer
On the day of his last stand
Heading up proud and glorious
Singing "this land is my land"
Sword it by your side
And map in your hand
Heading up into the rain
Singing "this land is my land"

Now I've seen your dust arising
Lord, your horses smell
I've seen you crossing across the bad lands
And I've seen you towing your line as well
I've watched you when you're sleeping
I've seen you filling up your can
Singing as you work
That this land is my land

You're busting into my country
Messing up my fields
Playing games in my holy places
Tearing the earth with your wheels
right now your star is ascending
And your head is busting with pride
But I wonder if Custer was still singing
"This land is my land" when he died

Was he still singing "It's is my land" when he died?
Was he singing when he died?

    Wow what a song.

Red Cloud would have loved this song.

  3. t.... t....

I can really relate to this song because there is nothing I like more than Rhubarb pie and custard. Mike captures that very well in this song.

    Custer's defeat.

He was a very bad man, but they got him in the end.  Hate to say it, but he deserved it.  Wonder what his last thoughts were; did he 'see the light' perhaps?

Love the Waterboys; such clever musicians.

  5. e.... ....

After the revolution Mike Scott is all over the radio.

  6. S.... ....

Reggae/folk/blues.  Some mix, to my ears anyway.   Cool.

@MURFSWORLD If you like the bluesy edge you'll love a solo Mike Scott song called 'Two Great Waves' - some proper growling on that tune.

wow..this is a first-time listening for me. Coincedently when I met the Waterboys Mike and Steve in 1986 (at Pinkpop, Holland) I had a partition to be signed in name of the American Indian Movement...and yeah..Mike and Steve were happy to sign their name supporting the good cause! namely...avoiding the Govt. of taking their precious land!! so uh...mista custer...can you read me?? teehee of course not! nice story Mike........p.s. do you have any video where-on you cover B.Dylan?

This song has a great feel to it, very offbeat, n Mike Scott does a great whispery/raspy vocal. Love it.

The Waterboys / Mike Scott have been down so many musical roads and still maintain a very unique style. LOVE this song and its strange funky guitar Almost has something of old Springsteen / Asbury Park feel to it).
MIKE SCOTT ROCKS! Always has, always will!
