Warwick, Dionne - What's Good About Goodbye Lyrics

What's good about goodbye?
Fair about farewell
You know a broken heart
Can come from such a broken spell

Your love could bring eternal spring
Your kiss could be a magic thing
Your smile could be a shining light
Burning from day to day
More lovely from night to night

But if you should go away
Our dream would go astray
Our soul would be a sigh
Say you're mine forever
Say you're mine but never
Say goodbye

I'll have to stick with Margaret Whiting's rendition of this song as my favorite. Maybe it's this arrangement with the tempo "dragging." I guess all in all, the song to me, with the melody and the lyrics, doesn't lend itself to an improv-type rendition.

Margaret Whiting? Never heard of her. I love this recording, especially on the original vinyl.

    M.... ....

Her father was Richard Whiting who was a well-known song writer as early as the 1920's. If you've ever heard the song "She's Funny That Way" (June Christy revived it with Stan Kenton's band in 1946 as "He's Funny That Way"), the words to it were written by Richard Whiting. Margaret's recording of this song is also posted on the Tube. So is the clip from the flick "Casbah" in which Tony Martin introduced the song.

No MrManorAvenue. Ms Whiting's '48 recording is "nice", but forgettable and bloodless. Ms Warwick's rendition conveys a real meaning--and leaves the listener with an emotional experience and not merely a sense of, " that was nice; what's the next cute tune." And the tempo is not "dragging", it is integral to the sense of poignant distress of a failing love relationship. That, and her delivery style, should stir reminiscence in any listener who has ever loved.
