Warwick, Dionne - The Windows Of The World Lyrics

The windows of the world are covered with rain
Where is the sunshine we once knew?
Ev'rybody knows when little children play
They need a sunny day to grow straight and tall
Let the sun shine through

The windows of the world are covered with rain
When will those black skies turn to blue?
Ev'rybody knows when boys grow into men
They start to wonder when their country will call
Let the sun shine through

The windows of the world are covered with rain
What is the whole world coming to?
Ev'rybody knows when men can not be friends
Their quarrel often ends where some have to die
Let the sun shine through

The windows of the world are covered with rain
There must be something we can do
Ev'rybody knows whenever rain appears
It's really angel tears
How long must they cry?
Let the sun shine through

    Genious, Dione e Barcarah.

  2. H.... ....

Sad song. I have always heard this song but never knew what it meant as a teenager. I then read about the Vietnam War in details and then read that the song was written during the war era. So so sad! Christ! War really destroys everything. Why O why?

  3. S.... M....

When all is negative let the sunshine through.

    So True!!

  5. I.... G....

This song was recorded in 1967, not between 1979 and 1990.

This song is too beautiful ,far too beautiful. Let freedom and love reign
    In this world🇯🇲♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🇯🇲

  7. X.... G....

To me it is of little use to compare one artist to another--what is the point of saying songwriter X is better than songwriter Y, or this songwriter is the best ever? I just want to appreciate them all. Bacharach/David is one of my favorite songwriting teams. So much good music over the years.

  8. b.... ....

9/11 brought me here and a story of the "Falling Man"...identity unknown, but some say he was an employee of the Windows Of The World restaurant

  9. D.... B....

To all of Dionne fans who do not know this was Ms.Warwicks personal favorite.

  10. j.... e....

    spirit. i quite agree. wolfen

  11. j.... e....

    dionne's classic. black beauty.

  12. H.... ....

I only read the details of the Vietnam war a few days ago and I went to bed really sad. From the 50s to the 70s. For what? People want control of other people's lives. Can you imagine? What about the massacre of the village of My Lai? There were only women, children, and old men there. The American soldiers were responsible for the destruction of the village. 400 people died that day. Lord have mercy! That is the reason for this song.

  13. C.... B....

OMG! My father used to sing this all the time. I never knew who recorded it. I love you Dad. RIP

  19. E.... S....

The sun must shine through. The good will somehow prevail even though there are so many evil people who want to hurt.

  20. j.... w....

This song breaks my heart every time I hear it, it reminds me of the World Trade Center on that tragic September 11, 2001. That was the day that the world changed in an Instant.

  21. D.... F....

    2010! My b-day

  22. D.... M....

Gosh! I remember playing this song so many, many years ago. I loved it then and I still do in 2019. The way the world is today, perhaps it should be given some air time?. Thank you Mr Bacharach and Mr David for writing wonderful songs such as this and thank you Ms Warwick for singing this and other B & D numbers so wonderfully.

  23. P.... M....

    I learned this in school

  24. N.... ....

, was this song written with inspiration from the actual restaurant? Or is it unrelated and the title of the song is simply a coincidence?

    N.... ....

NeoGeo64 this song was written in 1967. Read above comments

It was written for Vietnam War

  31. b.... d....

Stunning...can't hear/see it...in that vacuous brain? Mine just grew another new-ron (sic)

  32. J.... E....

What a talent. What a gem of a lady.

  33. E.... S....

Who ever thought Bacharach/David would write an anti-war song? Gorgeous and heartbreaking.

  34. S.... o....

This was a protest song to the Vietnam war, but certainly is appropriate for the world today.

  35. r.... m....

Thanks for the invention of records. We can walk down memory lane. There is nothing like this anymore.

  36. 4.... a....

This was my first tape i was 16 years old ,

  37. I.... C....

Como amo essa voz...minha adolescencia quantos sonhos! Saudades.

  38. G.... K....

One of the best artists of that era and IMO under-rated in music history. Her voice was the perfect pairing with his music. Brilliant

  39. a.... m....

Reminds me of the Ray Bradbury story "All Summer in a Day". Freaked me out as a kid.

  40. f.... ....

Beautiful, albeit it somewhat haunting and painful song to listen to at the same time. That's sadly the case with it being a harsh reminder of 9/11, along with what happened that horrible day. :(

  41. S.... W....

This song has stayed in my mind for long time.. first heard it while looking at the beach.. bitter sweet

  42. B.... R....

  43. C.... B....

    I love her

  44. E.... P....

    amo essa voz

  45. A.... S....

I remember all Dionne and Burts songs. All were wonderful and very special,

  46. C.... L....

as an ex airline employee. it's like this song was written for 9/11 very sad

    C.... L....

I guess it can be applied for all wars.

  47. S.... S....

As i gotten older i can appreciate the lyrics and they way Dionne compliments this the writers heart. Simply beautiful

  48. M.... R....

This song is so eerie, made in 1967 when the World Trade Center was built, the Windows of the World was the restaurant on top of the tower, all there died, not instantly but they all died that day. The skies were famously blue and bright but filled with black smoke... it lead to wars. Who wrote this song? I feel like an Angel must have wrote these words and sent them to Earth as a foreshadowing! :(

    M.... R....

BananaMilkshake Hal David wrote it for his son whom was shipping out to Vietnam. I left in December 67, at the height of this beautiful ballad.

    M.... R....

Misses Robot Burt Bacharach - music and Hal David -Lyrics. They were one if the greatest song writing teams of the 20th century

  49. S.... T....

I saw her with Johnny Mathis when Desert Storm started. I had never heard that song before. Beautiful...

  51. P.... M....

Have you heard Scott Walker's version?

  52. A.... B....

    This is a true classic!

  53. d.... ....

so brilliant and understated... what a treasure.. a true original..

  54. a.... ....

This song is so apropos to today's state of affairs. People should be singing this and asking themselves what they can do to bring back world peace.

    a.... ....

    bring back world peace??????

    a.... ....

There was peace in the world in the beginning before mankind succumbed to evil and there will be peace once again. The Prince of Peace will bring it in His appointed time.

    a.... ....

    AMEN! Soon and very soon!

    a.... ....

To have world peace, we must respect each other's differences and ALWAYS act civilly toward each other.

    a.... ....

"what they can do to bring back world peace."
Never. "Peace" can only be 'maintained' by those willing to resist Evil, which has a VERY fluid definition depending on one's POV and level of perception.
I know what Evil is. Do you?

  55. v.... ....

One of the five or so prettiest of all xillion Bacharach tunes; Ave Maria pretty.

  56. A.... K....

    THE GREATEST VOICE EVER
    MS. WARWICK................

  57. L.... M....

The best composer with the best voice.

    L.... M....

Composers. It was Hal and Burt.

  58. C.... ....

This should be Earth's swan song - it sums up what is going on today on our planet - it is indeed covered in darkness!
"What is this whole world coming to?". "There must be something we can do."

    C.... ....

We can do our not in our little corner. We can think positively. And meditate.

  59. O.... L....

Out of all the great singles this lovely lady released, this one--from the Golden Summer of 1967--was always my favorite. I always thought it never got the recognition or accolades it deserved. So haunting and beautiful.

    O.... L....

@Olias Lives I agree.....it was a constant play in my house as a child. When it was time for me to take a nap and calm down, this was my mom's song to get me to come down. lol

    O.... L....

    Olias Lives....it's Dionne's favourite recording.

    O.... L....

Olias Lives It was Hal David's attempt t

    O.... L....

DaOrigTruthSeeker you are everywhere on YouTube. True music lover, eh?

    O.... L....

Olias Lives It was Hal David's anti war effort. Dionne sings it so strong.

  60. f.... ....

Such thoughtful interpretation of these hopeful lyrics. And, yes, let's not forget, please, that it's Burt Bacharach, music, and Hal David, lyrics. Burt & Hal were a team.

  61. A.... L....

    Lovely

Pres. Obama does not want to kill our troops; that is why we are in the air .i'm a History teacher black& female. you see we know about war right here in the U.S. whites KILLING OUR BLACK BOYS.... but when our country call we BLACKS  are ready to defend THE VERY WHITE FOLKS THAT HATE US IN THE U.S....FUNNY RIGHT?  STOP RACISM!!!!!!

    t.... ....

@taliba1951 Odd that you would pick this song posting to talk about politics, but since you have, ask yourself a few questions. "How many Union soldiers do you think died between 1861-1865 fighting for YOUR freedom"? "How many white people voted (twice!) to elect the first black President"? "Do you think he would be President if only black people voted for him"? I'm a white person who was listening to Dionne Warwick songs when I happened upon your silly posting. I hope you are not teaching in my school district.

  67. D.... ....

This is very beautiful and relaxing.

  68. D.... ....

Her voice was so pretty and peaceful. I love listening to her.....i take flight in my mind when she sings.

  69. J.... M....

there aren't a lot of people who could sing this.

  70. l.... c....

    l.... c....

lola cee tearof joy sis' !

    l.... c....

lola cee it is like a release of something precious inside like cleansing tears. The beauty, and longing for peace and beauty and love gets to be expressed and released.........

  71. l.... c....

should one person sound this so good

  72. 1.... ....

I agree with you.. I'm so proud that she decided to live in Brazil -- my country--and she appears on TV now and then. I also agree that she should be more valued in America... it seems that people have already forgotten her contribution to the American music history ... so sad...

  73. p.... ....

I read somewhere That this was her favourite song to sing of the many good ones that she sang

  74. L.... C....

My friend - kitkatism1 - I agree with you! Very beautiful song! Dionne's magical voice!

  75. K.... ....

    Don't worry, we see her!

  76. b.... ....

Pretty good version but The Free Design did a better soulful job of it, in my opinion.

  77. R.... F....

a very soulful song which brings me to tears

  78. E.... L....

I am more of a Dionne fan vs. Whitney

  79. S.... C....

And sad at the same time. I love it though.

  80. S.... C....

    This song is so calming..

  81. D.... T....

  82. R.... F....

    TRUE!!!

  83. D.... ....

I respect Dionne so much for being such a great cousin to Whitney. She really loved Whitney a lot,it was clear to see. RIP Whitney...you and Dionne gave this world some of the best music we will ever know.

  84. m.... ....

Ironic since this is an anti-war song and 9/11 was used to justify wars in countries that had no involvement with 9/11.

    m.... ....

mynameis677 The restaurant on the top floor was called windows on the world.

    m.... ....

    Yes the restaurant 😩

afffff esse video é muito chatooo feio afff

  89. K.... ....

R.A. the Rugged Man sent me here. I like this song too.

  90. w.... ....

Absolutely. However, that's like saying Karen would have been nothing without Richard Carpenter.

  91. L.... K....

Let's not forget the geniuses who actually WROTE this song, Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics). Without them, Dionne wouldn't be who she is today.

  92. D.... ....

Was this the theme to a film or is sole ownership of this one to Dionne's discography only?

  93. s.... ....

    Soooo beautiful!!!

  94. T.... S....

tspeirs100 Dionne Warwick should definitely be celebrated as one of the top female singers of her's and my generation. I always thought her niece Witney Huston also had one of the great voice sounds I have ever heard but thanks to BB she lost a lot of it. Hope she can come back. Love both of them.

  95. T.... S....

Dionne Warwick with Burt Bacharach are definitely part of the rock and roll era.

Beautiful words especially to hear more than once.

    Staber 44

  96. J.... K....

The Free Design (with a stunning lead vocal by Sandy Dedrick) recorded my absolutely favorite version of this.

  97. C.... M....

Thank you very much for posting this song - it was from 1967...

  98. M.... M....

@ramona2400 The lyrics get to me too . . . and yep, a few tears too.
