Warwick, Dionne - A House Is Not A Home Lyrics

A chair is still a chair
Even when there's no-one sitting there
But a chair is not a house
And a house is not a home
When there's no-one there to hold you tight
And no-one there you can kiss goodnight

A room is still a room
Even though there's nothing there but gloom
But a room is not a house
And a house is not a home
When the two of us are far apart
And one of us has a broken heart

Now and then I call your name
And suddenly your face appears
But it's just a crazy game
When it ends, it ends in tears

Darling, have a heart
Don't let one mistake keep us apart
I'm not meant to live alone
Turn this house into a home
When I climb the stairs
And turn the key
Oh, please be there
Still in love with me

I'm not meant to live alone
Turn this house into a home
When I climb the stairs
And turn the key
Oh, please be there
Still in love with me

  16. n.... ....

Wow! I never knew she sang this song first. I would have sworn that it was a Luther Vandross original.

  17. s.... ....

My first date was taking a neighborhood girl to see Dionne Warwick at Blinstrub’s nightclub in Boston, December 1966. I was only 13. Sat ringside, and we got to meet her backstage after the show.
A Memorable night to cherish always.

  18. B.... B....

You can tell where Whitney Houston got her stage presence and class from in the beginning of her career.

  19. D.... ....

That's Whitney's birth mom don't care who disagrees. 3rd cousins don't share tha much resemblance cuz the bloodline is well diluted and mixed by that by that realm. I would understand if they were even 1st cousins for that matter cuz thats closest to brother and sister. I believe she had an affair with Cissy's husband and got pregnant and Cissy raised her. This was very common in those days. Whitney bares absolutely no resemblance to her mom in any way! I searched for all young pics of Cissy and footage and found no similarities. But in her brothers, I see the resemblance to Cissy. It does happen where your genes totally skips a generation but I doubt this was one of them. They even make identical facial expressions when they hit certain notes. And listen closely to the vibrato too😉

  20. L.... C....

This woman sings so beautiful. still listening over 50 yrs.later.

  21. T.... G....

    Luther made dionne some money

  22. n.... ....

    She's so stunning.

  23. J.... M....

it's cute! Never knew she sang this! She sang it pretty!

  24. m.... m....

ALL OVER THE WORLD IN THE PAST 60 YEARS...NO ONE CAN BEAT BLACK SINGERS IN THE EMOTIONS THEY CONVEYED IN THEIR MUSIC...THEY PRACTICALLY WEAR THEIR HEART & SOUL ON THEIR SLEEVES...

  25. k.... ....

Gave me the chills. Dionne made it sound easy which really showcased her superb singing and delivery. Sure other singers sang the same song but I feel like others oversang it as if trying too hard to show off their technical abilities and didn't sing from the heart.

  26. P.... J....

What a good time, we had peace, we believed in life, peace and happiness, there was no violence and the world exuded hope and love.

  27. E.... C....

    Professional singer

  28. M.... G....

Luther really took this song , to a magic moment she originated it but they are still the best , they should've did a duet but unfortunately Luther is gone

  29. c.... ....

I didn't know Dionne did this wow.

  30. F.... B....

The phrase at 1:50 puts me away! When she tucks “Keep” up into her head voice - brilliant choice.

  31. M.... H....

Diva mil vezes Diva com D maiúsculo!!!

  32. U.... D....

*sincere and pure vocal performance from real singer, absolutely free of prerecorded dubbed vocals*

  33. C.... I....

Who was the guy kissed her hand in first second?

  37. v.... b....

I love this song with Dionne Warwick!

  38. C.... B....

I was born at the right time. I grew up in the 60s and 70s. Best music ever. I'd turn on the avocado green GE clock radio and on the same station mind you, I'd hear Dionne, Elvis, Temptations, The Who, Beatles, Sly and the Family Stone, Delfonics, Led Zepplin, Johnny Cash, and much more. I love all music except that cloud rapper crap.

  39. d.... V....

The world is over. All good artists are dying without replacement. So little left.

  40. J.... H....

  44. h.... ....

Wasn't this really Dusty Springfield's song first?

  45. G.... S....

legend. its sad there's hardly any singers that can perform like this anymore. no need for grand props or stage production. sometimes simplicity is key

  46. D.... L....

Love Dionne she's brilliant, but this song isn't for her.

  47. W.... V....

If Dionne was a portrait she would be a masterpiece.

  48. B.... M....

    Life was so good then.

  49. b.... k....

I love this song..so real unlike songs of today

  50. S.... V....

I had no idea she did this song first. I always heard the Luther Vandross version because my Mom is a BIG Fan of his!

Not bad though, it's my first time hearing the original. Nice, very nice, and Luther Vandross served this song justice!

  51. M.... A....

    Beautiful music.amazing voice.love it.

  52. m.... m....

The voice that defines an era before the British Invasion. An era that conveys the passing of the Baby Boom generation. Those who experienced the trauma of the Second World War were about to confront a new musical genre that brought us Flower Power of the mid to late 60s.

  53. k.... ....

You can park a semi sideways in each of her nostrils

  54. F.... T....

lyrics by Hal David, Bacharach was nothing without David

  59. P.... L....

    Sister pabts

  60. K.... D....

Just want to add a big thumbs up to the accompaniment. The sax solos especially at the beginning and end contribute significantly to make this the classy song many have described it as here.

  61. n.... a....

That back is elongated, Dionne had a tall Eartha/Teyana Taylor vibe with her ball gown.

  62. M.... M....

I saw Dionne Warwick & Burt Bacharach in concert in Florida with my mom..rest her soul..in the early 90's...Dionne killed💝💝💝💝🎁🎁🎁🎈

  63. A.... L....

Hearing this song makes me want to get my "ish" together, put all these random women aside, fall in love with a good woman and turn my house into a home. 💏

A house is not a home. Neither is an apartment a home, when you can't afford to rent one in spite of earning 2 college degrees and working hard for decades. I love Dionne.
I hate GREED. The GREED is committing genocide of 90% of us.

  81. L.... K....

I first heard the Marbles version which is fabulous. This original is good too, but am I hearing out-of-tune singing on 1:26? Not flawless, as some comments here say.

  82. N.... N....

    Dedicated to M...

  83. T.... S....

There will never be another Dionne! So exotic, beautiful and statuesque, and that uniquely haunting voice could never be duplicated
