Warren Zevon - Jeannie Needs A Shooter Lyrics

I was born down by the river where the dirty water flows
And the cold wind cut through me, it cut right through my clothes
And the anger and the yearning, like fever in my veins
Set the fire burning

She came down from Knightstown with her hands hard from the line
From the first time I laid eyes on her
I knew that she'd be mine
Her father was a lawman, he swore he'd shoot me dead
'Cause he knew I wanted Jeannie and I'd have her like I said

Jeannie needs a shooter
Shooter like me
Jeannie needs a shooter
Shooter on her side
Jeannie needs a shooter

We met down by the river, on the final day in May
And when I leaned down to kiss her, she did not turn away
I drew out all my money and together we did vow
To leave that very evening and get away somehow

Jeannie needs a shooter
Shooter like me
Jeannie needs a shooter
Shooter on her side
Jeannie needs a shooter

The night was cold and rainy down by the riverside
I was riding hard to meet her when a shot rang out behind
As I lay there in the darkness with a pistol by my side
Jeannie and her father rode off into the night

Jeannie needs a shooter

Warren Zevon Jeannie Needs A Shooter Comments
  1. T.... I....

Stravinsky was astonished by his talent when Zevon was a young boy.
    That says it all.

  2. m.... ....

I can think of only one guy who mentions gun(s) and shooting as much as Warren in his songs, and that guy is Marty Robbins. This concert is about 3 months from the genius, Marty Robbins' death. RIP to Warren and Marty - you don't know how much you are missed.

  3. K.... C....

Springsteen would have given his ball to sound like this.

  4. D.... C....

Spend the day listening to this on repeat

  5. M.... E....

Play at 1.25 speed for a sweet alternate version

  6. P.... C....

damn straight lady but this gotta be top 40 X

  7. D.... ....

What's the story here? He's in love with a drug addict and she turned on him?

  8. b.... ....

A lovely cover version of Bruce Springsteen's original.

    b.... ....

No it isn't. Zevon wrote this.

    b.... ....

@WILLIAM BEMENT I think it's a take on the same concept. But it's so different that I can hardly see any resemblance between the two songs.

    b.... ....

You mean Janey Needs a Shooter? Not the same song. The title did inspire WZ however, and BS helped him write Jeannie. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/15-insanely-great-bruce-springsteen-songs-youve-never-heard-17760/janey-needs-a-shooter-1978-13491/

    b.... ....

@WILLIAM BEMENT "All right, now you probably know that I wrote this song with a friend of mine. I've been very fortunate in life with friends , I got a lot of good friends, good people. Ok, you probably know this story, we both wrote this song. And I'll tell you it's true....God created the world and the earth, the sky, the heavens and the creatures and the snakes and the seas and everything in six days, and on the seventh day he rested, but he got out for a little while in the afternoon. And he said "because I love these people SO much, I'm gonna give them one Bruce Springsteen. "
    Now, Jeannie Needs A Shooter!"

  12. K.... M....

I saw Warren zevon live over seventy times and met him over 12 times.

  13. d.... ....

Hotline Bling has about ten million likes, this has 151. The world I live in doesn't make sense to me anymore. One thing is for sure, I got into Zevon too late. This guy was legendary.

  14. D.... E....

    Fucking Beautiful!!!!!

  15. S.... R....

It is impossible to pick a fave Zevon song. They are all good.

  16. R.... L....

    REAL rAND r:THANKS WARREN

  17. T.... Y....

:46 he forgets the lyrics lol

    T.... Y....

No he didn't. That's how the song goes.

    T.... Y....

Lyrics, like the key signature, are merely a suggestion!

  18. R.... W....

How he hasn't even been nominated for the Rock Hall is beyond any words.

    R.... W....

Well yes... but I think I'd nominate Paul Rogers and Bob Seger before Warren... as much as I love him... Paul 'FREE/BAD COMPANY' Rogers is not an inductee in the RNR HALL OF FAME!?! or Bob Seger????

    R.... W....

The same way 100 year cognac isn't for the average palate, Warren isn't for everybody. Just everybody that understands nuanced songwriting..

    R.... W....

    or J. Geils!!

    R.... W....

@Craig Wilkins Is Free in the HOF? I'm too lazy to google it. Probably Bad Company is.

    Ross Warner

Really good article... I enjoyed the read.

Also just finished “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.”
A pretty raw and shocking account of a musician I knew little about besides his music.

I remember I used to cover “lawyers, guns and money.” at open mic nights...

    Most people were moderately amused...
But the hard core musicians and songwriters would go ape shit and sing along enthusiastically.

    Warren was a musicians musician...
    And a songwriters songwriter.

You either got him... or you didn’t.
I’m afraid the Rock and roll hof is one of the later.🙄👍💪🎸

  19. J.... H....

Love the tune. The guy playing the old Led Paul Junior is quite possibly the best player I've ever seen! Would love anyone to tell me more about what other projects he has worked on.

    J.... H....

+John Harrington The guy playing the LP Jr. is Randy Brown and definitely not Waddy. He looks nothing like Waddy, and Waddy hasn't changed his look in 35 years.

    J.... H....

Randy Brown is on the right playing a regular les paul.(he's barely in this video) the lead guitarist that it keeps showing with the lp jr. is John Wood. and yes he's one of the greatest ever.

    J.... H....

He also played Harm Rabb on "JAG."

    J.... H....

As in "Here's Johnny . . ." from Johnny Strikes up the Band at this concert.

    J.... H....

He is, of course, John Wood.
