WZ will never get boring. I was 14, I think, when he died. My dad bought "A Quiet Normal Life" and played it as he drove me home from school. I'll never forget the first time I heard Werewolves of London. We were in the shitty beat up Volvo, pulling onto the Business 80. He told me how Zevon just passed away and that some of his last words were "Enjoy Every Sandwich."

Fifteen years later and his music is still as fantastic as it was on that car ride home.

I'm the first in my family to escape "The Family Curse" (so far, at least). Everyone on my late mother's side had died of lung cancer, generally at an early age, from what I understand, regardless of whether or not they smoked tobacco. I am at the cusp. The last time I saw my mother was when I drove back to The Bad Apple to visit her in Montefiore Hospital in the "death wing" -- when I arrived, she was animated, upbeat, completely incoherent (unless she had reverted to Russian, which was her first language as a child on the Lower East Side in the 1920s). She didn't recognize me (or anyone else, so far as I could tell). That night I got a call in the wee hours. She was gone.

So, I guess I beat her record. Maybe it was all that weed I inhaled back in the sixties. (Recent studies have revealed that "heavy mj smokers" have *_lower_* lung cancer rates -- not just lower than *_tobacco_* smokers. They have lower lung cancer rates than NON-smokers.

You read that right. Heavy cannabis smokers have lower lung cancer rates than people who've never smoked, period.

Apparently the plant's anti-carcinogenic components work their way deep into the lungs where they work their various forms of magic, i.e., apoptosis, anti-angiogenesis, I forget what else (IIRC some of the studies are on the nih.gov website, and the fedgov has taken out a patent on the medical use -- including anti-cancer -- while at the same time insisting "no medicinal use." The cancer industry is big business, and coupled with the FDA "revolving door" policy, well, run the math and see where ti takes you.)

I digress -- and wish poor Warren had inhaled a lot more than whatever amount he did, but that was before anyone knew The Evil Weed was good for anything besides anti-nausea and appetite booster for chemo victims.

I don't know if any of that in any way addresses your "wondering if there's any control over it" musing, but if it does, well, my prayers go with you.
