Warren Zevon - Dirty Life And Times Lyrics

Some days I feel like my shadow's casting me
Some days the sun don't shine
Sometimes I wonder what tomorrow's gonna bring
When I think about my dirty life and times

One day I came to a fork in the road
Folks, I just couldn't go where I was told
Now they'll hunt me down and hang me for my crimes
If I tell about my dirty life and times

I had someone 'til she went out for a stroll
Should have run after her
It's hard to find a girl with a heart of gold
When you're living in a four-letter world

And if she won't love me then her sister will
She's from Say-one-thing-and-mean-another's-ville
And she can't seem to make up her mind
When she hears about my dirty life and times

Some days I feel like my shadow's casting me
Some days the sun don't shine
Sometimes I wonder why I'm still running free
All up and down the line

Gets a little lonely, folks, you know what I mean
I'm looking for a woman with low self-esteem
To lay me out and ease my worried mind
While I'm winding down my dirty life and times

Who'll lay me out and ease my worried mind
While I'm winding down my dirty life and times

Yessiree! 110% honest. That's our Mr. Bad Example. Was he a Renegade? Absotively! How about a Mutineer? Posolutely! Was he a matchless poet, troubadour, genius and irreplaceable gift to the world? Bet your ass he IS! I say "IS" because he blazed across my life like a shooting star, and lit up the world as he did. Matchless. And left the world so much darker for his leaving of it...but for those of us who knew him and his music, he lives forever on the edge of dreams....Rock the Pillars of the Heavens, Excitable Boy! There'll NEVER be another you!

Miss you buddy. You may not have been the most well-known artist, but despite coming well before my time to listen to and appreciate your music (I'm 24), you'll always a be a reference point for me. You told it like it was, you accepted your flaws, you were despicable in your good intentions, you will NEVER be forgotten. RIP.

I want this song to play at my funeral. Those who know will laugh their heads off. Those who don't, well, what are they doing at my funeral anyway?

    B.... C....

Werewolves of London was my husband's favorite song- when the day of his funeral came, it came on the radio as all of the cars were parked in front of the funeral home. We all cranked it up loud enough for heaven to hear. The funeral directors said it was one of the most amazing funerals they had ever handled. My husband was a recovering alcoholic who pretty much started killing himself with Zevonesque justice just a year after Warren died. We started our love affair by breaking up with our respective partners/spouses, on Valentine's Day 1978...The radio played Excitable Boy that night, and it continued for 33 years. Play it all night long my friend.

    B.... C....

Water from my soul, really grabbed me.I turned 60 this past January one and so many I have known in my dirty life and times.US Navy 1974-1980.A dirty ole Sailor like my daddy before me all of which I am part of every day here in this place.

"I'm lookin for a woman with low self esteem."

    One of my favorite lines.

For some reason, a couple of women I know thought that was vile, but it's the narrator CALLING HIMSELF AN ASSHOLE.

  33. M.... ....

    he was right!

  34. C.... B....

Thanx Sammy for providing me the CD of the song in question.

I've read 'Dirty Life & Times of Warren Zevon', a bio by Crystal Zevon. The library
system carries it. It's really compelling.

I'd live to eventually get all of Warren's CD/albums. Is amazon.com a good place
    to start? Thanx.

  35. S.... B....

    the wind.

  36. w.... ....

I have, laughed my head off mate!

  37. w.... ....

I love this song, it's painfully honest and open. Six years ago, in a surprise diagnosis, I was told I had cancer, my lymph system was top to bottom tumour, and as things stood, I hadn't got that long on the clock. Anyway, as you might guess I had chemo and then radio, and that was six years ago. I've taken two things from these events: you only get one go on the merry-go-round, enjoy it, and you wouldn't smoke if you'd seen what I've seen.

  38. K.... S....

    Miss U Warren :)

  39. E.... G....

the last comment was four months ago? well lets keep it going, oh and isnt prison grove off of lifell kill ya? its off one of the newer ones in anyway

  40. T.... G....

Bob Dylan quotes this song in an interview with John Elderfield about painting from a couple of years ago.

  41. C.... B....

What album is PRISON GROVE off of?

  42. C.... B....

MetroidfanCNC - Thanks mega-tons for offering to upload Zevon's legacy. BUT....I'm con-
fused, THE WIND was one album of how many of Warren's, beginning in 1978 with Exciteable Boy. Some of the postings of THE WIND, had like Part 1 or Part Six, etc.
I need some info on this..... any knowledgeable answers out there.
Just one of the many awesome things about Warren Zevon was his signature voice. No
    mistaking that wonderful voice !

  43. B.... D....

One of the greatest song writers I can recall. Miss you, Warren.

  44. b.... ....

    Hey Warrant - You live!!!!

  45. e.... ....

I've enjoyed Warren for many years now. I sorely miss him but when I play his music( I have all his cds including the latest posthumous releases.) it's like he's right here with me.

  50. d.... ....

Started listening to a lot of Zevon again recently and it occurred that he reminded me a bit of the Eagles, whom I have not liked since middle school. I decided to give them another shot - lo and behold, Eagles still suck and Z still rocks.

My dirty life and times may be second only to Warrens,I love the way Crystal read from the book, every time I watch it I think about all the wild times in Aspen, and all the other good shit, people, and things, that went on.

  60. t.... ....

Ol' Dwight really held back on this one. It's a damned good effort, for all that!

  61. s.... ....

This may be my favorite of his songs. What a great songwriter.
