Wariner, Steve - Honky Tonk Work Of Art Lyrics

It’s a honky tonk work of art
A still life in a run down bar
Another beer is all I need
To complete this masterpiece
Red eyes and a neon tan
Paint the picture of a lonely man
This ain’t no ordinary broken heart
It’s a honky tonk work of art

Dim the lights add some thick blue smoke
And just a touch of juke box glow
I’m the master when it comes to hurt
Michelangelo would love my work

It’s a honky tonk work of art
A still life in a run down bar
Another beer is all I need
To complete this masterpiece
Red eyes and a neon tan
Paint the picture of a lonely man
This ain’t no ordinary broken heart
It’s a honky tonk work of art

My critics say I use too much blue
But that’s my style since I lost you
Other artists like to work in paints
But I’m a genius with teardrop stains

[REPEAT CHORUS]

I had the pleasure of meeting Steve in the summer of '95. I was working a show at a small outdoor venue outside of Chicago. He was sitting backstage eating chicken and I walked past him. As I was working security I didn't approach him and talk to him because anyone who has worked a venue like this knows a professional doesn't bother the acts. We're there to keep them safe. Anyway, he called me over by him and asked me why I haven't talked to him. I explained my theory behind why security is in place. He told me to knock it off, sit down and have some chicken with him. As it so happened that was on August 29, 1995. It was my 34th birthday. As I was talking to him I got in a conversation about all of the songs he had performed that day that I didn't realize were his songs as he has/had such an extensive list he has done. He performed commercials for Pepsi and a lot of other commercials over the years. He asked me, "Have you ever heard of a little show called Who's the Boss?" I said yes, I had. He started singing the theme song to the show and I about flipped out. First of all that he was singing something just to me. That doesn't happen everyday in my world. He then handed me a CD and a guitar pick. The album was called Drive. By far in my opinion the best album he has ever done. The album was signed and said Happy Birthday with his autograph. I found out later that my brother (who promoted the show) had set the whole thing up before I went back stage.
I found out that day what a laid back down to earth guy Steve Wariner is on that day. It's a day I'll never forget and I only wish I could hang out with him again. He is one of the coolest people you could ever want to meet and he has absolutely no ego given the amount of talent he has. I just thought I'd share this with the people who enjoy his music. If you ever get a chance to see one of his shows and haven't done so; do it. He does a great show and his talent on stage makes his studio work seem lame. By the way, I still have the CD to this day. Someone took the guitar pick. I'd like to kick their butt, but hey, I got the autograph. It's all good. That CD is one of my most prized possessions and I would be really disappointed if I ever lost it.

Totally envious of you (in a good way)! I've stories of how nice Steve Wariner is.
I love the fact that he doesn't succumb to the stereotyped country singer with a cowboy hat :)
His voice is so pure, that few country singers even come close.
I believe I own all his studio CD's and now some LP's as some of his music never made it to CD.
The one that's been elusive for me is "Down in Tennessee".
I have all but one song via youtube. It's called, "It's all over but the memories".
You can find 2 live versions, but no studio version.
And I agree Drive was one of his best.
I can't say it's his best because it depends on what mood I'm in!
Hope you still have that autographed album and the guitar pick :)

A great cut from Steve which shows him at his most traditional in terms of country output.  He is one of the more versatile and talented artists to have come to Nashville in recent decades but somehow superstardom has managed to elude him.
