Walsh, Joe - Mother Says Lyrics

Mother says be careful
And don't stay out too long
Don't do things you shouldn't
Miss me when I'm gone

Daddy says not now, son
Well, just do the best you can
And you'll make out somehow, son
Be just like I am, just like I am

You won't need a reason
She don't let you choose
And so to make the game easy
Mother makes the rules

We all know how the rules are
Changin' from day to day
That's the breaks, and I'm sorry
Some of us must be going
Some of us have to stay
Some of us may be showing
Some just fade away

It's sad to say it's the ending
All the feelin's gone
If you don't mind pretending
You can come along

And mother says she's ready
And if you have the time
She'll help us all to get steady
Make us all feel better, make us all feel fine
Make us all feel better, make us all feel fine

Damn...brings back memories. Wishing I live in a state where pot was legal lol

  2. J.... T....

I like the "backwards" guitar, and his playing guitar through a Leslie Speaker. The Beatles weren't the only ones to do that. My favorite track. I have the original vinyl yet, that I bought when it first came out. I hadn't realized until then that Joe has split The James Gang. I also have his "So What" Lp. That has good stuff...and a reworking of "Turn to Stone."

  3. C.... F....

I love the story about him and John Belushi. they turned up at a restaurant in blue jeans, they were refused entry by a snooty matre de as it was black trousers dress code, so they went to a hardware store, bought some spray paint, took their jeans off, and sprayed their legs black 😁

  21. W.... ....

I stole this LP from my sister when I was 10 as she was leaving for nursing school and this was the first song I listened to. Unbelievable songwriting and Joe is from my home state of Kansas. Definitely an LP that shaped my Audiophilia. Play on, Joe... all of Oz is listening.

  26. m.... p....

if you don't mind pretending you can all come along, it does not get any better than that.

  27. T.... M....

Real Joe. I like pre-Eagles music of him, more than Eagles.

  28. S.... W....

Damn ... I love the power of this song, centered just right between those speakers............ yeah !

  29. J.... S....

More Creativity Here ..... Than Most Bands Ever Dream About....!!!! And Solely Uniquely JOE !!!!!

  30. h.... ....

Got that James Gang vibe, but i think Jimmy Fox is a better drummer. This was Walsh's first production after leaving them.

  31. J.... ....

Incredible song...they truly don't make 'em like they used to !

  32. B.... S....

Joe motherfuckin Walsh, one of the most prolific underrated rockstars ever

  33. T.... W....

I played this song in my head when "Mom" passed away. God Bless You Lois!!!!!!!

  34. D.... L....

Joe played a concert in a small venue in San Diego County.  My wife (at the time) told me to bring some of my old James Gang 8 tracks for him to sign. I said that it would be a waste of time. While waiting in front of the bathroom door before the concert, he walked within two feet of me. Damn It!!!

  35. D.... O....

Joe is a guitar god, plain and simple. So melodic and creative. Been a fan for many years...

  36. F.... B....

I have a hard time reflecting
With the people that i meet.
    No one seems any different.
But I can tell by my empty pockets
    Fortunes surely change.
    So I keep on walking
    Down these dirty streets
    Looking under overpasses
    For the fade away poets
and the secrets that they keep.

  37. J.... R....

Let’s just be thankful for the music and hope joe lives to be 106. He has extended my life by 50 years.

  38. O.... ....

Joe Walsh, hailing from Kent State, my alma mater. Joe made it through the good times and very dark times. Our finest graduate.

  39. T.... U....

    Joe is totally appreciated

  40. J.... H....

Joe Walsh in my small minded opinion is simply the greatest guitarist and band member, he never complained unless it was to the fact that he was always right, he has that gift many musicians only grasp at with guitar picks, he fully knows what he's doing, and that's leaving a sweeping record of great music like Mozart, Beethoven, etc., I love him like my dear brother!

  41. D.... M....

Pure Pop for crazy people brilliance

  42. M.... M....

Joe Walsh is my go-to guy for not only his masterful slide guitar, but the expressiveness of his voice paired with truly meaningful lyrics. A true genius. Barnstorm is a masterpiece perfect for a trip to the mountains.

  43. L.... S....

Love that piano middle section, but I do have to call Joe out on it. Sounds like Nicky Hopkin's piano solo in Jeff Beck's "Rice Pudding." That's fine because I dig that tune as well.

  44. d.... ....

Joe's addictions may have taken many a great song or album from this drab old world.

  45. S.... S....

    An artist ...

  46. I.... P....

13 thumbs down on this tune . Something tells me that there's over a dozen lil villages missing they're idiots. lol

  47. G.... B....

Glenn here again, One of the many times seeing Joe....Barnstorm 1973 at an outdoor tent concert venue called the Mississippi River Festival at the Southern Illinois at Edwardsville. Joe came out with the Heil Sound Company doing the audio using Bob Heil's....Talk Box, playing Rocky Mountain Way. Wow Wow! .......amazing!

  48. T.... H....

I'm positive I first heard this song on KNAC-FM, (which I managed to pick up while driving through the Santa Monica mountains in L.A.) right after the album first came out and after the song ended, the DJ made a comment about how great it was to hear Joe do a solo album.

  49. R.... G....

    Hell yeah

  50. m.... ....

IMO, Joe didn't need The Eagles, and The Eagles didn't need him. Also a shame that ABC/Dunhill Records railroaded him into releasing 'The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get' album into a "Joe Walsh" solo titled album. He was steadfast against it, and righfully so. It really was a Barnstorm album. Joe wanted to be in a band with likewise quality musicians and songwriters. It was always within him to be the front man but it was a role he didn't exactly relish the thought of.

    m.... ....

I really agree with you on this. The two did not need each other. His own body of work held its own. However, "In the City" and the duel with Felder on "Hotel California" get added to HIS collection on my playlists!!

BTW The Smoker you Drink The Player you Get is the best title ever!! Personally my favorite Walsh album. No filler song on the disc. One of ten CD's i would want to have on a desert island...with endless battery power(lol)

    m.... ....

    mellotronage
I agree about Joe joining the Eagles, I remember being kinda surprised when it happened. It seemed strange to me because I remember thinking, Joe Walsh is a stand alone act, he doesn't need anyone. Hell, he hasn't even been solo for very long.
But I wanted to ask you about your comment regarding Joe getting railroaded by ABC/Dunhill. I never knew about it.
    Can you elaborate?

    m.... ....

Idk.. joe was tearing walls out of hotels losing his driver's license and buying mansions in those years.. he needed supplemental income

  51. J.... S....

    IT LIVES!

  52. m.... e....

i was stationed in San Diego in the early 70s. there was some dark green hash around, this album sounded good.

    G.... B....

Doubly envious of you now, Glenn!

    G.... B....

    GO CARDS!

    G.... B....

Hey there! The James Gang was MY first concert too - in 1971, when Joe was still there. Baltimore Civic Center. I was 16. Joe left shortly thereafter. The "new" James Gang sans Joe released Straight Shooter in 1972 and Joe released Barnstorm at the same time. I bought both but thought Straight Shooter just sucked. Barnstorm on the other hand was wonderful and remains one of my all-time favorite albums. Definitely my favorite Joe Walsh album. When the James Gang came to Baltimore they sold out the 15,000 seat Civic Center. A year later without Joe they couldn't fill the 2,000 seat Shady Cove Music Hall.
I saw Joe with Barnstorm in the summer of 1972 opening for Steven Stills and Manassas. What a show!

Late at night like many, I go to Youtube and play
the old songs I enjoyed while growing up, maybe you do the same.
I usually gravitate from listening to the Beatles, Stones', Pink Floyd, The Doors and so on. But for some reason I came back to
Joe Walsh. No mater if it was with Barnstorm or the James gang or Joe himself. He is indeed a special talent who never got IMO
much credit for what he did for R and R in our country.....do you agree?

    C.... ....

@Michel Grimes your dad was right....BAND is for pussies....guitar is for rebels

    C.... ....

Absolutely... Right on, I think a lot like you, and I was in high school when this song came out.

    C.... ....

ive been a je walsh fan since i first heard his work with the james gang. That live album just blew me away, and the immense talent he has to play mutupple instruments, write, sing, all in his very unique style where NO ONE ELSE sounds like him. An American treasure. Barnstorm was a fabulous album, still one of my alltime favorites

    C.... ....

@Innerspace100 That track is now dead like bridge over troubled water.

    C.... ....

    @STEVEN KOUKIOS I don't.

  67. t.... b....

Lived in Boulder when this album was released. The last minute of "Giant Behemoth" never fails to bring me to tears as it captures the despair & loneliness I felt during that time then as the album brilliantly flows into "Mother Says",my chest literally fills with the joy & exhilaration also experienced during those years. Gotta put "Barnstorm" right up there with "Electric Ladyland" as influential in my coming of age experience..

Mother will..." Make us all feel better, make us all feel fine"

    t.... b....

I was at CU 73-78. Barnstorm was one of many soundtracks of that time, along with Eat a Peach, Dixie Chicken...music to streak by. :) Barnstorm is one of those "once in a career" albums that most artists have a hard time living up to, but not Joe.

    t.... b....

Jeb Harrison oh no, not Joe... was meant to be.

    t.... b....

tommie b Here we go, and I'll tell the World About You, Early Bird called Morning. ..Back when everyone enjoyed each other's music ..I loved it! !! My Youth 😎😍😍😍❤

    t.... b....

Saw Joe at Regis College Field House back in '72, it was trippy and mind bending...

    t.... b....

40,000 points to you tommie, carry on.

  68. M.... F....

    Just a regular Joe !

  69. J.... Z....

I DJ'ed an outdoor party once from the back of a pickup truck in high school in 1990 and every 4th or 5th song was James Gang or Joe Walsh including (I think) this track. Most people were like, 'What's this? Play some Stones!' and every so often someone would come up and say, 'Great tune. I love Joe Walsh.' I'm happy he's healthy and still playing and making music.

    J.... Z....

+James Zante I really dig this song, but i just wish he wouldn't have included the big empty jam session in it. I'd prefer to hear one of his guitar solos. Just my opinion though.

    J.... Z....

I think he was going more for atmosphere... still a great tune.

  70. C.... 6....

    Fucking love this song!!!!

  71. D.... ....

Songs with the intricacy of this one do not exist anymore. You will never hear pure song writing like this again. What a shame!

    D.... ....

    +DrWolfman3
well said; his lyrics speak to everyone

    D.... ....

Playing guitar through a Leslie speaker here. Not sure if anyone else besides Joe and The Beatles did that.

  72. D.... Y....

One of the few great guitar players still alive today. Most of them have left our world to play at the big gig in the sky

  73. l.... ....

Joe Walsh-an extremely gifted guitarist and songwriter, one of the best.

    l.... ....

Amen... been a fan snce I heard Lifes Been Good at about 10yrs old.

    l.... ....

    I completely agree <3

    l.... ....

    @Jeanine Rose Yes He is!!!...

  74. o.... b....

I discovered this album, and Joe, in my parents' records at an early age.. for some reason "Barnstorm" isn't that well known and I never could find a CD of it, so THANKS for posting it, really! I am, and always will be, a Joe Walsh fan

  75. R.... F....

    I like him....

  76. S.... M....

One of the worlds best guitarists ever up there with Clapton and Hendrix

    S.... M....

Simon Massey sure: clapton is the most overrated gtr player in the world.

    S.... M....

@Tapio Mäkeläinen You may well be right .

  77. R.... L....

  79. R.... L....

VERY glad I had the good sense to go see his show last year. eL pRimo.    ] -)

  80. C.... K....

Joe will not be appreciated until he is gone.  An ICON to the greatest extent.

    C.... K....

Oh he's appreciated all right. Those of us that love him know that he's a gift from the gods.

    C.... K....

i've seen him 3 times man always blows the fuckin doors off, he's the reason i started learning guitar man, i just wish i was alive back in the glory days man damn being born in 92

    C.... K....

I agree, he's certainly revered by those of us" old souls" who know of his musical history.
And now with the internet, his young/new fans will only grow to appreciate the timeless musician that he is.

    C.... K....

No way man, I've been a righteous fan of his since I was a teen. He's the reason my folks took me to see Eagles in '03. He's my fave. All the way.

    C.... K....

@Don R. Mueller, Ph.D. No not in this age. Tommy Bolin was great also but died way before his time.

  81. J.... ....

    Joe at his very best!

  82. j.... ....

"Mother Says" is genius Joe at his best. "One and One/Giant Bohemoth" lead into this song, shining the band's brilliance even more.

  83. .... ....

definite 'fave track from this great LP...thanks. it's just a trip in all the changes & composition.
Looks like my cabin. sans sunroof ; )

  84. S.... S....

,,,if you don't mind pretending, you can come along,,,,Hmmmmmm.

    S.... S....

I had pretend friends and they only played with each other......Peter Pan had it good........

  85. c.... ....

I fell in love with this song when I bought Joe Walsh's Greatest Hits. It ranks up there with Walk Away and Life's Been Good.

  86. P.... H....

Indeed Joe Walsh is underrated just like this fantastic album...its a shame.

    P.... H....

So your saying that the Eagles are underrated, because that seems shaming for AMEERRIICCAAA!!!!!!!

    P.... H....

    @Jesse Saretzky
    sure.....that's exactly what I meant...S.A.

    P.... H....

@Jesse Saretzky No kidding the have the most selling american record of the 20th century.

  87. A.... L....

    Definitely an underrated album.

  88. C.... K....

    Essential Joe Walsh....

  89. T.... R....

Most of his recent tours are with the original James Gang

  90. l.... ....

Takes five to then joints to get a buzz now on the shit today. I agree Andrew the golden age of rock and pot have sadly faded into the past. Horticulturist and geneticists.who clone this new shit-be damned. Joe was and is the man.

  91. A.... D....

We are so lucky to have come up the pike thru this time......oh, and kids, there were no clones, only the best grown around the world....Thailand, Colombia, gold weed from Mexico.....great canvases to throw this art against....

  92. M.... R....

Forty years??? No! Wait...I turned 18 in '73. This came out...1972. Gawd, I feel so...old..

  94. J.... J....

It's amazing that it has already been 40 years since this album came out. Great album! :)

  95. J.... O....

I am so happy I raided my Old Man's record stash over 15 years ago. If I didn't I would probably be a fan of the black eyed peas or something worse.
