Walkmen, The - In The New Year Lyrics
Oh, I'm still living
At the old address
And I'm waiting on the weather
That I know will pass
It's gonna be a good year
Out of the darkness
And into the fire
I tell you I love you
And my heart's in the strangest place
That's how it started
And that's how it ends
Well I know you're with me
It's a point of pride
In this room of mine
Oh, I'm just like you
I never hear the bad news
And I never will
We won by a landslide
Our troubles are over
My sisters are married to all of my friends
Yeah, that's how it started
You took your sweet time
And I waited by without complaint
Til all the pipe dreams made me insane
So it's all over
It's all over anyhow
You took your sweet time
Finally, I opened my eyes
My friends and my family
They are asking of me:
“How long will you ramble?
"How long did you say it would be?"
Snow is still falling
I'm almost home
I'll see you in the new year

Walkmen, The In The New Year Comments
The first time I ever heard this band or heard OF them was in 2002 ,when I saw them on Conan O'Brian and I wrote about it in my diary. 😂😂😂😂😂
boys need to get out of hiatus and create again...
Unos capos.
What a stellar performance
Tremenda banda.
Wow. This song grabbed me when I first heard it, and I listen to it at least once every year. But this, his voice is just amazing - it's got a texture or dimension to it that isn't in the other version. The guitar too.
YES!! Definitely the best version of the song... love it!
So underrated
🙌🏽whoop🙌🏽
I'm currently living this song since January, we'll see how this year goes. Every time the sun seems to be rising a big gust of wind blows out the light. I wonder how it will feel in 3 years, listening to this song and recalling 2018.
Certainement le meilleur groupe de rock alternatif
I love this song
Can somebody please bring The Walkmen back for fuck's sake?
Ham's voice f*ck f*ck f*ck f*ck f*ck f*ck etc etc
The trajectory they took from scratchy rockers to straight up crooning is incredible. This stuff holds up incredibly well. Here's to a reunion one day!
((( <3 )))
High wire act. Insane
great singer
love this track. love this band.
The three times I saw them play this live, I cried each and every time. Their shows were just that seriously ethereal and emotional. Criminally underrated band, for sure.
His voice is epic!!!
play "the rat"
alright, i'll go back 8 years and give them the memo.
😂😂😂😂😂
just fucking brilliant. goose bump music. nice one fellas
i have a love story with this song
1 great effort, even if you mashed your voice.which happened to the band and roy orbinson is still a legend.
honestly, with that voice and band, how come such pointless views it is pathetic.
people are clueless to this band.
Hamilton Leithauser is definitely one of the most underrated vocalists of modern music. His high notes in the song are flawless.
My god... my god. And im atheist.
one complying song.
@erule92 Agreed. nobody I know has heard of them.
Same here ;-;
@Chris Quinn listen to "everyone who pretended to like me is gone" every song on that album is money.
Happy new year you all folks!
Fucking nailed it! It's like the perfect marriage between Dylan and Tom Waits... Breathtaking.
Just saw them again Friday and he sounded great. I have seen him sound a little raspy like this before though. What sets the walkmen apart is how they induce real emotion with almost every song with music and lyrics. That's what I've realized makes music timeless. Some catchy tempo and b.s. lyrics can make a good song, but it gets played out and you don't find yourself returning to it eventually. I can see myself listening to this shit for f$%king ever.
I have a real love-hate relationship with this song. I love it because it's awesome, and I hate it because I can't sing along to it! Ham's range is still downright enviable, even if he can't belt it out to the same degree anymore.
"portrayed better than" I mean. I saw them with my now fiancee at the Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri last year. They were supporting The New Pornographers, and they just made them look stupid. Brought the damn house down. Gee can you tell I'm a fan?
Hamilton Liethauser has the kind of voice that picks you up by the scruff of the neck, slams you hard against a concrete wall. takes all your money, then drops you and kicks your head in repeatedly, and all you can do at the end is say "Thank you. That was the greatest experience of my life." No where else is that portrayed in this particular version of this song. His voice is quite simply lethal.
WHO CARES!
i know its true...
What a voice, that's what it's all about. Giving all of yourself to the music!
what a great fucking performance. i have no words to describe this.!
If you dig the walkmen - hunt down "Jonathan Fire*Eater" - same band w/ a different lead singer. Great song writing - well worth the effort.
@TreadingLemming Listen to all their tracks and see what you think, they are too many good songs to just pick a few out is unfair to the others. Go from the 1st album to their most recent their 5th although you can skip their 3rd one, they were transitioning into this sound from their previous albums and it quite wasn't their yet. But all of the albums have something unique in them
@TreadingLemming Hear "Juveniles" "Woe Is Me" "They're Winning" "The Rat" "Blizzard of 96" "Canadian Girl"
Epic voice
yeah. make more. like that.
@StandardofPurity Thanks for the tip....not as good as this number. I'm truly impressed with this one and, more than ever, I'm wondering if this is all there is? I write/sing in a DC band and we've just released our first full length CD. We're up for a possible Wammy nomination. I'd love to open for a band that does a lot of stuff like this. Even though we're pretty pop/Brit-pop...I LOVE this song and it's feel and apparent longing.
@TreadingLemming Listen to Angela Surf City and be blown away
Having listened to four or five other songs by this band, it is difficult for me to understand the commotion...Until I hear this number...What PASSION! WOW...I wish I'd written it!!
Dude!!
He LOVES singing this song!!!!
Double thumbs up!!!!!!!!
These guys are superb! Can listen to them all day long!
RL
every time i hear this, i realize why i love to be alive. i would marry this dude.
