Walker, Scott - The Bridge Lyrics

I've watched her from the river banks
I knew her when she danced with dreams
White doves were there to dress her hair
And so was Madelaine

At night the people's faces danced
Like pearls colliding on the breast
Of fat Marie whose thunder laugh
Was just a thread from crying

Her sailors stained her cobblestones
With wine and piss and death desire
And sometimes blood for Madelaine
Whose laughter was the night

Her girls would lift their dresses high
and breathe the stars and kiss the sky
She'd smother them with whispers then
Embrace them with her sighs

Before the bottle dulled my eyes
And made me so I couldn't stand
I'd overact and play the clown
When Madelaine would cry

And now I watch from riverbanks
I watch it weave it's memories
White doves turned gray and flew away
And so did Madelaine

I love it. how could I miss this artist so many years?

  3. J.... A....

Apparently I am one of only a few who loved Scott's later work too. Such bravery in exploring the nature of expression through sound. Our worldis made of music (sound and light vibrations) and Scott understood how vast are the possibilities to expres our souls. God rest his soul.

Hi Guidofski...great track one of my favourite Scott songs reminding me of walking in the narrow London streets by the Thames in the sixties and wishing all the pretty girls were waiting for me....thankfully one did!! Really missing Scott now.

  5. w.... j....

Beautiful man beautiful voice ❤️ RIP Scott 💔 Sadly Scott Engel is no longer with us but Scott Walker will live on in his music 😢👏

  6. M.... W....

Scott Walker was possibly the greatest male UK singer ever. He had a great baritone voice and was handsome but never allowed himself to be commercialized. A trailblazer, adored, imitated but never matched. He sang Jacques Brel better than Jacques Brel. His songs were before their time. I feel sorry for people born after 1970!

  7. g.... ....

Such sad news been a fan since the sixties , will never stop playing his music , such a great voice , R I P Scott you enriched my life .

    g.... ....

Never will stop playing his music, he reminds me of who I am....

  8. S.... W....

Scott's loss is easily as profound as that of David Bowie. A Titan, a genius and a humble one at that.

    S.... W....

    indeed.

  9. J.... C....

His songs are a star in the musical heaven and will shine, eternally.

  10. m.... ....

  13. B.... ....

Terribly sad news today. Rest in peace Scott. Not just a great voice but the artistry to use it to such moving effect.

  14. P.... M....

    Rest in peace, Scott.

sea shells along an ocean floor.......waves rolling in and out... foam from the ocean waves ... we walk around......leaving foot prints in wet sand.......gone with the next wave crashing in...... never existing.... as it goes out again......washing us away....into an open sea..... we are left with bubbles in the sand......

My father shared his Scott Walker albums with me during my senior year of highschool back in 2001 and I was hooked. This song in particular is especially haunting to me.

I thank you so much for all these absolutely beautiful Scott Walker Video's and all your work putting them together. I was bought up listening to Scott being played constantly at home. I could listen to him for another 50 years. I am a rookie on here and not sure what I am allowed to do, and not allowed to do?? I have my favorite playlist that includes lots of your videos on Scott on private setting somehow! I will work it out soon enough? I Also I think I've flagged a few thinking it was the like button~ before I found the like buttons.  However ~ consequently I've learned you only flag stuff if you find it offensive..Therefore I will apologize to anyone if I have upset them. :(   I'm groping my way around slowly now and trying to be extra careful..so please forgive me. :) Good start to google I must say............

    L.... L....

I suspect that the music will be a clue.

  29. h.... ....

"Whose laughter was the night..." Such lyrics are rare those days.

  30. m.... ....

Thank you, oh so much, guidofski, for all these wonderful Scott Walker songs and videos. I absolutely LOVE IT !

  31. s.... ....

Most of that charts on Scott's solo albums were done by the wonderful Wally Stott (who later had a sex-change op and became Angela Morley - look it up if you don't believe me). Scott said that working with Wally / Angela was like having Delius in the studio. A fabulous orchestrator. A few of the charts were also done by Reg Guest, who arranged a lot of Dusty Springfield's big orchestral numbers. You're right, the album and CD notes are a bit vague on this

    s.... ....

I agree, and keep trying to say more, but run out of time.

    s.... ....

Wally Stott previously led the orchestra on the Goon Shows. And as Angela Morley scored Watership Down.

    Fuck the X-Factor generation

    P.... S....

Pandemic Sheffield Stop blaming young people for the algorithmic trash the corporate music industry churns out and subjects us all to. If you care about culture its time for you to engage, participate, actually talk to people. Your misdirected bitterness does nothing.

  33. S.... ....

I agree too. Lets leave him be and appreciate the treasure trove he has given us

  34. a.... v....

I would pay any price for that concert. There are thousands like me as well!

  35. b.... ....

    a piece of poetry

  36. v.... ....

how many Americans know this song. he's so wonderful!!

  37. l.... t....

the X factor generation would never appreciate anything like this

  38. M.... ....

Much as i like Scott Walker's songs, I have to agree with namtap . We have all this great music - let the guy live his life as he wants.

  39. 6.... ....

When I hear this beautiful song I think of Van Gogh's Café Terrace on the Place du Forum, anyone else?

  40. H.... M....

@cosmicrider287 Raak!!

  41. h.... ....

    @captainkundalini1
A thinking man's crooner has he been called. That might explain it ;-). But a pity it is indeed.

  42. t.... g....

@captainkundalini1 because people watch Jersey Shore now.

  43. y.... ....

12,549 views and not a single dislike. Who can dislike this beauty?

    y.... ....

ytcarol I could if I was smacked around and threatened, perhaps. But I don’t!

  44. M.... S....

Scott Walker is a real musician. Everytime he is involved in a production, singing, arranging, writing, he gets so close that you shiver. His latest stuff is really frightening, operatic, but it's music that you can't predict. I love all these old numbers and by God don't they stand the test of time!! They are still amazing.

  45. c.... ....

great - love ya scott !

  46. g.... ....

    @cosmicrider287 It is indeed. ;)

  47. D.... ....

@signature50 I don't know if that would happen because he has made it well known that he has no intention of hearing his songs again, let alone sing them, after spending so much time in the studio perfecting every tiny detail of the arrangement.

  48. D.... ....

I think it's just because people are looking for instant gratification, and most songs start off pretty slow. You have to make an investment of time in Scott Walker to get the most out of it. If only we could convince people to give an ENTIRE song a chance.

  49. s.... ....

Damn pretty and gloom... fear not, a german author is on the way to make this guy popular again!

  50. R.... G....

signature 50: Scott will not tour nor is it likely that he will perform --but like the Barbican premier in 2008 of Drifting & Tilting it is possible that if enough of us impress upon him what his early works mean to us (he is not personally impressed with these....) it is possible that he might agree to a celebration of selected pieces fr Scott 1 - Scott 4.. this effort would need coordinated organization....

  51. m.... ....

this is the Scott I adored (still listening to all his music today)

  52. B.... B....

    Beautiful.

  53. s.... ....

I would like there to be a Facebook / Twitter pressure group of some sort whereby signatures could be collected to try to persuade Scott to tour again with the songs from this time - I'm sure it would attract a lot of interest. These numbers need to be heard by the X-Factor generation.

    s.... ....

signature50. ❤❤ Scott Walker. His voice is so captivating and smooth. Scott in his early 70's now. Scott is million times better than Michael Buble. Listen to Scott all the time ❤USA

  54. g.... ....

I agree, it's frustrating and puzzling that they remain so obscure... I hope that in some small way I can help bring some attention to them.

    Thanks for your comment. :)

    g.... ....

Hi Guidofski...yes it is frustrating but I recall the advice I was given when I worked in fron of audiences as a medium. "Your words are meant for those who are ready for the, Others will be moved in other ways and come to another realisation at some other time. Just do your job and communicate.Beauty is in the ear of the beholder." Be glad and rejoice in Spirit's beauty...always.

  55. B.... ....

lyrics second to none. gotta love the walker!!!x

  56. g.... ....

A poet indeed. Thank you for the lovely words! :)

  57. n.... ....

Thank you guidofski for posting this beautiful, haunting song. He is such a wonderful poet.
