Wale - Shades Lyrics

(Boy) Beautiful [x7]

[Verse 1:]
[Wale]
Chip on my shoulder
Big enough to feed Cambodia
See, I never fit into they quotas
Sneakers wasn't fitting and my knees needed lotion
Long before I knew the significance of a comb
I roam like phone with no vocal reception
Immigrant parents had me feeling like a step-kid
And black Americans never did accept me
That's why I thrive so much, win and respect dig
I never fit in with them light skins
I felt the lighter they was the better that they life is
So I resented them and they resented me
Cheated on light-skinned Dominique when we was seventeen
I figured I'd hurt her, she'd evidently hurt me, and all women who had light features
See, I never let a light broad hurt me
That's why I strike first and the first cut's deep

[Chorus]
All my light skinned girls to my dark skin brothers
Shades doesn't matter heart makes the lover
Boy you're so beautiful boy you're so beautiful shades doesn't matter heart makes the lover
Boy (beautiful caramel),
Boy (beautiful coffeepot)
Boy (Beautiful chocolate)
Boy (Beautiful toffee)
Boy (Beautiful pecan)
Boy (beautiful licorice)
(boy you're so beautiful)

[Verse 2:]
Just another knotty head nigga
Hoping Wes Snipes make my life a bit different
In middle school, I had the right to be timid
I had beautiful words but girls never listened
Listen, blacker the berry, sweeter the product
Well, I'm fruit punch concentrate and they water
Walk into my room thinking how to make moves
Ain't thinking like a student but how Ice-T do it
Light dudes have the girls looking there all year
It's not fair, the ones with the good hair
Couldn't adapt to naps, I wavecap they naps and slept on me
Man, I hate black
Skin tone, I wish I could take it back
Or rearrange my status, maybe if I was khaki
Associating light skin with classy
The menstrual show showed and me, that was not me

[Chorus]

[Verse 3:]
They say black is beautiful
But ask them beautiful light girls if its black they attract to usually
What if Barack skin was all black, truthfully?
Would he be a candidate or just a black in community?
Because black dudes tend to lack unity
And them blacker girls ain't on the tube, usually
Right now, at 23, I ain't mad at them reds no more
But for long time I had gone cold
Blindfolded my own insecurity was holding me back to reds, I ain't know how to act
They would get the cold shoulder and know it was an act
A defense mechanism what I thought that I lacked
Confidence

[Chorus]

Im a millennial born in 85.
i have to say... this newer generation of music sucks soooo bad.
but this new generation does have good people like Wale. J Cole. Kendrick Lamar... it fails me soo much when i see Amigos making it bigger than the more talented 3 i mentioned. this some good shit though.. i cant wait til people snap back to reality and realize what good music is

Wale is just sooo smooth and can never do any wrong in my eyes. love him

  13. K.... O....

" from a light skin girl to a dark skin brother " 🤕🤔 are we gonna act like darkskin women arent tge main ones effected by colorism smh im disappointed

    K.... O....

@rodney holmes Black women will never take responsibility or accountable for their actions. They will continue to blame colorism on everything. They are jealous of celebraties dating preferences. Colorism will end tomorrow if black women love themselves and their blackness and embrace the afrocentric.

    K.... O....

Black women are oppressed clearly and if you can't see that you're just blatantly ignoring it as black men usually do look the other way when their women are being attacked if you really think colorism can end just by people embracing their color you are honestly the most ignorant person I've ever had a discussion with in my life because black women are not the main perpetrators of colorism and I never said black women do not judge black men for their color but black men judge black women for their color way harder and way more

    K.... O....

@Kay Ojo black women aren't oppressed now you're making more shit up as you go.

    K.... O....

@Kay Ojo you blamed the reason why black women have to wear makeup on men (black men). which is bullshit

    K.... O....

LORD JABALI y’all love playing ignorant about colorist and it’s different effects on males/females, light/dark until black men are affected by it....this is why black women shouldn’t support y’all at all. Because you do not care and act like we are not oppressed like y’all.

  14. S.... M....

Still touched by this in 2018.....

    S.... M....

Still touched by this 10 years later.

  15. R.... M....

    R.... M....

  17. A.... B....

    Not available

  18. M.... B....

fuck half breeds and fuck dark hoes ...all hail the IMP dark skin brothers unite.

    M.... B....

+Mario Browaale Idiots like you is why blacks stay divided and hating each other. Even in Africa they come in many different shades. I don't care how dark you are I bet there's going to be someone darker so should they talk shit on you and say you're less than them?

    dhis go deep

  59. f.... ....

    shit go hard

  60. r.... ....

For the life of me I can't understand why there is so much animosity towards the video for "Pretty Girls", it is obvious that Wale understands the whole light skin vs dark skin mess, he has obviously overcame that so the video is not a reflection of a "color complex" he has against himself. So why can't we just say that he(if he had anything to do with the casting in the first place) chose women who were beautiful not particularly paying attention to a specific skin tone.

  61. O.... S....

I'm not against you, otherwise I wouldn't tell you what I think. I do believe that the skin color really doesn't matter. If I liked a white guy and he liked me too, I would date him..

  62. L.... ....

I know that now , i just wanted confirmation . i dont know why y'all turned against me . I was only tellin the truth and you would definitely not date a white guy right ?

  63. O.... S....

He means lighter Afro-Americans. But I think it just depends, I'm black but I have nothing against white guys.

  64. L.... ....

@brooklynsfinest11221 Fucking puta . I never said that it matters , dont blow things out of proportion but matter of truth black girls don't simply like white guys .

  65. K.... M....

@VitaNegern77 stupid stop fuckin up this page for wale we dont need anymore ignorance in the world...color doesnt matter get a damn clue

  66. D.... ....

    This beaat is crazyyyy
