Waits, Tom - Tom Traubert's Blues Lyrics

Wasted and wounded, it ain't what the moon did, I've got what I paid for now
See you tomorrow, hey Frank, can I borrow a couple of bucks from you
To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

I'm an innocent victim of a blinded alley
And I'm tired of all these soldiers here
No one speaks English, and everything's broken, and my Stacys are soaking wet
To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

Now the dogs are barking and the taxi cab's parking
A lot they can do for me
I begged you to stab me, you tore my shirt open,
And I'm down on my knees tonight
Old Bushmill's I staggered, you'd bury the dagger
In your silhouette window light go
To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

Now I lost my Saint Christopher now that I've kissed her
And the one-armed bandit knows
And the maverick Chinamen, and the cold-blooded signs,
And the girls down by the strip-tease shows, go
Waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

No, I don't want your sympathy, the fugitives say
That the streets aren't for dreaming now
And manslaughter dragnets and the ghosts that sell memories,
They want a piece of the action anyhow
Go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

And you can ask any sailor, and the keys from the jailor,
And the old men in wheelchairs know
And Mathilda's the defendant, she killed about a hundred,
And she follows wherever you may go
Waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

And it's a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace,
And a wound that will never heal
No prima donna, the perfume is on an
Old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey
And goodnight to the street sweepers, the night watchmen flame keepers
And goodnight to Mathilda, too

I first heard this sang by Tico Torres on a live Bon Jovi bootleg around 2003. It was 15 years before i heard Tom's version. There's something Tom brings to the songs that just hit you right there and this is top of his game.

Waltzing Mathilda... it is actually Waltzing Mathilde (Mathilde Bondo) he met Mathilde during his stay in Copenhagen and this was his reply to the fact that he enjoyed a dance with her even though she had another man in her life and still has.. love makes you humble, love makes you smile. Love.. never lasts.. love.. never dies.

Bravo Tom Waits sung from the soul just like our Aussie Ballard “Waltzing Matilda “

Can somebody please explain to me what this song is about? What's Walzing Mathilda? Even if you write a very long post I'd still read it. :)

  51. J.... H....

Senior year of high school, '79. My best friend put this album on. Game over. Bought it, every album recorded before it and every album after, since. Saw him perform this song live twice. Two of the greatest performances ever witnessed.

You know, the melody of this masterpiece perfectly describes the tone of the lyrics of "Waltzing Matilda".

Thank you Tom Waits for your great music and talent. Greetings from Spain.
And thank you very much for sharing this, Ben Wright.

  82. J.... B....

I first encountered Tom Waits when the local rock station was playing full albums at midnight during my freshman year in college in 1976. Small Change came on, and I was floored. It was unlike anything I was familiar with, and fit with my musical tastes. No one I knew at the time had heard of him, and in my intrepid naiveté I set about evangelizing. I cued up the album for my sister-in-law, whom I've always admired, and waited for for the awe I was anticipating. He got as far as "Wasted and wounded...", and she burst out laughing. I think "crestfallen" describes my response pretty well. Undaunted, I've since purchased many of his albums. He has his own section in my ukulele notebook that is easily as big as the rest of the collection.

  83. S.... S....

that may possibly be the best recording of the best song of all time ...

    S.... S....

Not really. I sing better. Go easy on the faux-drama. You're probably some sort of lefty, i can feel it.

  84. U.... H....

Listening to Tom is always a nostalgic, transcendent, and highly emotional road. one I wish I could walk every moment.

  85. U.... C....

Story of my old life..I used to be a shameless drunk stumbling my way on the long road to ruin..waltzing Matilda the entire way there..luckily there are many exits and Matilda and I broke up some time back..ive a life fit for a tragic book but even the worse off can get up off their knees and leave the bottle behind..toast to new life ahead..

    U.... C....

It's a beautiful life after addiction..I once was there also...✌

  86. T.... W....

Great song but like us all, they only do it for the money. Their lifestyles and what happens behind closed doors like us all again is not all that flattering. But great song anyway.

  87. G.... L....

1978 I first heard The Heart of Saturday Night. I was 17 with a broad range of music tastes. Tom is a very special human being.

  91. A.... F....

    Old but gold

  92. A.... L....

It's funny how people want to hear driving or jolly songs all the time. You hear a beautiful song like this that´s got maybe a touch of sadness in it, but it's deep and life-affirming, it's got amazing lyrics that are worth printing and buying for themselves let alone the incredible vocal and musical performance to which it is set and you think : Yep. That's not just another song. That's a work of art. 'Work of art' seems to be a throwaway term these days. It's not all as good as this. No way. Will we hear the like again?
