Waits, Tom - Tom Traubert's Blues Lyrics
Wasted and wounded, it ain't what the moon did, I've got what I paid for now
See you tomorrow, hey Frank, can I borrow a couple of bucks from you
To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me
And I'm tired of all these soldiers here
No one speaks English, and everything's broken, and my Stacys are soaking wet
To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me
Now the dogs are barking and the taxi cab's parking
A lot they can do for me
I begged you to stab me, you tore my shirt open,
And I'm down on my knees tonight
Old Bushmill's I staggered, you'd bury the dagger
To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me
Now I lost my Saint Christopher now that I've kissed her
And the one-armed bandit knows
And the maverick Chinamen, and the cold-blooded signs,
And the girls down by the strip-tease shows, go
Waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me
No, I don't want your sympathy, the fugitives say
That the streets aren't for dreaming now
And manslaughter dragnets and the ghosts that sell memories,
They want a piece of the action anyhow
Go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me
And you can ask any sailor, and the keys from the jailor,
And the old men in wheelchairs know
And Mathilda's the defendant, she killed about a hundred,
And she follows wherever you may go
Waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me
And it's a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace,
And a wound that will never heal
No prima donna, the perfume is on an
Old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey
And goodnight to the street sweepers, the night watchmen flame keepers
And goodnight to Mathilda, too

my soul is crying!
Good Night to Mathilda too
I first heard this sang by Tico Torres on a live Bon Jovi bootleg around 2003. It was 15 years before i heard Tom's version. There's something Tom brings to the songs that just hit you right there and this is top of his game.
This song always finds me on a gray January day...there is no escape...
Damn!!! Sweet sorrow! ✊
I see & hear nothing even remotely redeemable about his singing voice or his music. Not a thing.
♪ ...too
yeah tom
Met him in 1974 when he was playing the Border House in San Francisco- his gift words and music left me spinning and I continue to love him in my 70’s.
Nobody like Tom - he is the voice of our souls.
For my Mum, Jean Mattilda Bond, miss you so much <3 <3 <3 This song always makes me cry :(
For me, the longing in this song hits me hard. It is a long time now since my boy is gone. This song takes me there.
love from the Netherlands...

Waltzing Mathilda... it is actually Waltzing Mathilde (Mathilde Bondo) he met Mathilde during his stay in Copenhagen and this was his reply to the fact that he enjoyed a dance with her even though she had another man in her life and still has.. love makes you humble, love makes you smile. Love.. never lasts.. love.. never dies.
Bravo Tom Waits sung from the soul just like our Aussie Ballard “Waltzing Matilda “
"Aussie Ballard"
I consider J. G. Ballard sui generis, same as Tom Waits. Who do you believe rates the title "Aussie Ballard"? Surely not Banjo Peterson...
Jan Kafka ...The one and only “Slim Dusty” May he Rest In Peace. ps check him out a true Aussie icon.
Beautifully
yeah tom i wanna waltz with bob dylan

Brilliant. Just brilliant.
I'm challenging myself not to cry listening to this..
manslaughter dragnets!

Depending on my melancholy this is my favourite song.
Great Tom! Thanks a lot for this song!

There was a time, but that time's gone.
We're so fortunate that were in this world at the same time as Tom Waits.💕
maybe i ll die
yeah tom play for me i have real pain in my heart i fell so sick
I always loved this song but I'm in love actually and it makes me cry like a child, I dream that one day I'm gonna listen this song with the girl I love, throwing my fingers through her hair...
There is no one like Tom, he in my humble opinion is a cast iron original. Thank You for being you Tom and for all you give.
My goodness...!
A beautiful expression of alienation and rejection. When I was a young man, I felt it spoke for me.
It was about this time that I first heard of him and then he was to be lionised by the "Sunday colour supplements "
I love ev ery song he's ever written but I love this one just a bit more.
意味は分からないけど、なんか心に染み込む曲。
Unvarnished. Real. Thank you, Tom Waits.
Two and a half million views... and only ten thousand 'likes'??? Just goes to show either most of the people have no taste at all in music, or else most of them are just plain tone deaf!
It is to WEEP!!! :(
Can somebody please explain to me what this song is about? What's Walzing Mathilda? Even if you write a very long post I'd still read it. :)
Senior year of high school, '79. My best friend put this album on. Game over. Bought it, every album recorded before it and every album after, since. Saw him perform this song live twice. Two of the greatest performances ever witnessed.
You know, the melody of this masterpiece perfectly describes the tone of the lyrics of "Waltzing Matilda".
one of most beautiful songs ever
Not Tom's best song but Rod Stewart ??????????????? get me the sick bag.
Dancing with Death.
there's only the Waits version
Genius. Glorious. Painful. Perfect
不毛地帯
"The streets aren't for dreaming now" I listen to this after yet another relapse and know that it's very true. Tom is someone that makes you want to try again
This is the first song I heard from Tom Waits since 1976 !
What a beautiful song. That piano though. Wow
Most and all of his music is so so very good

"and it's a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace, and a wound that will never heal"
maybe the most perfectly desolate line I've ever heard.
Tom sucks the marrow out of life.
Its gorgeous
I read a biography of Tom called, "The Lowside of the Road" and thought about what an incredible life this man lived. I am now just starting to listen to his music and it's everything that the biographer described 👌
best artist in my life seen tom playing in stockholm .still in love

Glass of whiskey in hand and a lump in my throat!

I wish that I could turn Gay and that Tom could turn Gay. Maybe we would have a chance.....
If Tom doesnt touch your heart..you don't have one...❤❤💘
🤣😂🤣😂😭
Fuck off.
Thank you Tom Waits for your great music and talent. Greetings from Spain.
And thank you very much for sharing this, Ben Wright.
I first encountered Tom Waits when the local rock station was playing full albums at midnight during my freshman year in college in 1976. Small Change came on, and I was floored. It was unlike anything I was familiar with, and fit with my musical tastes. No one I knew at the time had heard of him, and in my intrepid naiveté I set about evangelizing. I cued up the album for my sister-in-law, whom I've always admired, and waited for for the awe I was anticipating. He got as far as "Wasted and wounded...", and she burst out laughing. I think "crestfallen" describes my response pretty well. Undaunted, I've since purchased many of his albums. He has his own section in my ukulele notebook that is easily as big as the rest of the collection.
that may possibly be the best recording of the best song of all time ...
Not really. I sing better. Go easy on the faux-drama. You're probably some sort of lefty, i can feel it.
Listening to Tom is always a nostalgic, transcendent, and highly emotional road. one I wish I could walk every moment.
Story of my old life..I used to be a shameless drunk stumbling my way on the long road to ruin..waltzing Matilda the entire way there..luckily there are many exits and Matilda and I broke up some time back..ive a life fit for a tragic book but even the worse off can get up off their knees and leave the bottle behind..toast to new life ahead..
It's a beautiful life after addiction..I once was there also...✌
Great song but like us all, they only do it for the money. Their lifestyles and what happens behind closed doors like us all again is not all that flattering. But great song anyway.
So beautiful!
Mon ami pour ses nuits
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9GNwNNJnGQ&feature=youtu.be don't ask me why
1978 I first heard The Heart of Saturday Night. I was 17 with a broad range of music tastes. Tom is a very special human being.
Old but gold
It's funny how people want to hear driving or jolly songs all the time. You hear a beautiful song like this that´s got maybe a touch of sadness in it, but it's deep and life-affirming, it's got amazing lyrics that are worth printing and buying for themselves let alone the incredible vocal and musical performance to which it is set and you think : Yep. That's not just another song. That's a work of art. 'Work of art' seems to be a throwaway term these days. It's not all as good as this. No way. Will we hear the like again?
