Waits, Tom - The World Keeps Turning Lyrics

On our anniversary
There'll be someone else where you used to be
The world don't care and yet it clings to me
And the moon is gold and silvery

Who knows where the sidewalk ends
Well, the road will turn and the road will bend
They always say he marks the sparrow's fall
How can anyone believe it all?

Well, the band has stopped playing but we keep dancing
The world keeps turning, the world keeps turning
On his hand he wore the ring of another
And the world keeps turning, the world keeps turning

We broke the bank and we tore up the place
And we disappeared oh without a trace
Now the sun it falls into the sea
And around the only one for me

I was so green and the dress you wore was yellow
And the world keeps turning, the world keeps turning
The sun is down and the moon is in the meadow
And the world keeps turning, the world keeps turning

Put a hat on your head
Will you paint the whole damned town red with me?

Well, the band has stopped playing but we keep dancing
The world keeps turning, the world keeps turning
On his hand he wore the ring of another
The world keeps turning, the world keeps turning

The world keeps turning, the world keeps turning
The world keeps turning, the world keeps turning

  22. E.... D....

So beautiful. A work of art. Tears in my eyes. Thanks, Mr. Tom Genius Waits.

  23. B.... ....

By all means be proud that you have discerning musical tastes and the knowledge to tell good music from bad, but you need to look harder and not be so discouraged. Here's a few of my favorites: Felice Brothers, AA Bondy, The Duke and The King (Simone Felice), Sufjan Stevens, The Jayhawks, St Vincent, The Mountain Goats. There's soooo much good music out there now. Pop music is usually shit in most decades, you just gotta dig a little.

    B.... ....

BoobyMcDoogle I know the Felice Brothers. Performed with James at a pub for St. Patrick’s Day over a decade ago. Great guy :)

  30. J.... S....

I'm 21 and I already complain about new music, because it basicall takes absolutely no talent to get on the radio today, just a drum box and and autotuner. There are no true composers or lyrical geniuses that get anywhere close to the recongnition that people who sing about drugs and "hos" get. Sad state of music, for sur, but I am glad I can transcend the popular drivel that makes it onto the radio these days and appreciate music by a man who wears originality like a badge of honor.

  31. S.... ....

Such a beautiful song. Waits is really a romantic at heart. :)

  32. d.... ....

the four dissers dont deserve to Feel Tom, yet

  38. N.... M....

this song will be played on my funeral :)

  39. S.... B....

The blues ain't nothin' but a good man feeling bad

  40. B.... ....

This just might be my funeral song...

  41. n.... ....

"On our anniversary, there'll be someone else where you used to be"

God, that line is so sad I can barely take it.

  42. C.... P....

@DeepestBluestDay shouldnt u concentrate at the song instead?

  43. d.... ....

  46. E.... a....

    Beautiful video!

  47. D.... B....

till world keeps turning Tom still rules!

  48. W.... S....

@metalheadoj666 Tbh, i'm going to go ahead and be selfish in saying, this is what makes things so much better. If he were massively successful and rated it'd be justified yes, but it'd gain scrutiny and everyone would offer criticism, review, etc. He'd be eveywhere, I'm glad he's at the status he is. Its a statement about society that Tom Waits is quietly respected and Akon is a billionaire at the top of the charts with a song called 'where da hoes at?'...

  49. b.... ....

@Rosengren7 Same here, you got GREAT taste. I am obsessed with Tom Waits' music,. I was very excited when he got inducted into the Hall of Fame, finally justice has been served.

  50. M.... ....

    @dami1622 legendo :=)

  51. c.... ....

Tom doesn't sing songs....he sings perfect little movies.

  52. e.... ....

a voice that should be cursing the world sings it the tenderest of love songs.
the knowledge that should send us raging against the dying of the light leaves us with the realization that humility is endless.
the tears of sadness thus run down smiling cheeks.
this song, it's the further union, the deeper communion...

obviously he can sing about matters of which we cannot speak ...

    e.... ....

this was just as beautiful as the song

  53. f.... ....

Do you know where I can find any of these photos? The one at 00:44 is amazing. It reminds me of my home. Great song by the way. I'm sure the integrity of the music is very telling of you.

  54. M.... ....

Tom Waits spada u posebnu klasu kao i ovaj video.

  55. C.... ....

    awesome......just awesome

  56. a.... ....

    This song makes me cry!

  57. m.... ....

What can you possibly say about a song like this? If there's a god, his name is Tom.

  58. h.... ....

This video moved me. I would like to say " ARIGATOU (Thank you)" from japan.

  59. J.... S....

    thank you

  60. k.... ....

ma ima nas punoooo al smo samozatajni ;)

  61. S.... ....

If I close my eyes listening to Him sing...I can see a hobo wandering the earth, watching people...and singing in a park, on a train, or on someone's front porch. He who sees reality.

  62. c.... ....

@metalheadoj666 Take solace in the fact that most people who knows quality, and who's had the benefit of ever hearing Tom Waits, WILL agree with you! :-)

  63. B.... ....

    @ConanTheLibrarian100 Very well said

  64. d.... ....

  72. d.... ....

This is the song that I am left with after the end of a love dismissed. I love this, and it tears me apart...
"The door to love is devastation" ~Rumi 13th Century poet.

  73. C.... T....

    great music and great pictures.
    thank you.

  74. Z.... ....

Thanks for writing such a gem, you nailed something that was in my mind and I just couldn't get it out.

  75. B.... ....

who are all those people?. does he know every one of them or just put pictures of random people?

  76. J.... H....

    very nice work

  77. E.... M....

damondarkwalker I agree. I just watched the movie but have always loved tom waits and Jackson Pollock. The movie shook me most because I can identify with it personally on many levels. I've always considered myself too drunk to drive, too irresponsible to have children, and too content to change anything.

  78. d.... ....

This is the Waits song that plays a the end of "Pollock". I think that was the last time I got choked up at a film.

  79. M.... J....

I'm proud to be Norwegian because of Tom Waits. His grandmother was Norwegian, even with the same surname as mine

Bless you Tom. There are no more artists these days, but you definitely are. Bless you mate

  80. U.... ....

I'm so glad a lovely person recommended Tom Waits to me. Just Brilliant!

  81. 8.... ....

Nice job with the photos. Beautiful song. Tom Waits rules.

  82. j.... h....

    I tell you what
    the photos are breathtaking..
    You did Tom proud friend
    jh

  83. I.... M....

brilliantly choreographed visuals to such a heartfelt song about the world and it's apparent heartlessness. Tom always had a good grip on indifference.

  84. M.... N....

Don't be so modest - you did it soulful, as always, and you know how I like the rare shots. But the song is really beautiful.....
much more than I've expected it to be.
Greetings to beautiful Dalmatia and to you.

  85. d.... ....

    Peter vielen Dank!!!

  86. d.... ....

Hi, Mira, I am glad you like this video. I was looking what matches the song in the best way, of course in my subjective opinion:)

  87. d.... ....

    Danke dir:)

  88. M.... N....

Hi, Davor. This is a wonderful song, sounding so tender and softly in spite of Tom's grizzled voice, or maybe just because of that
    - strength and tenderness combined.
This video and Killing The Blues are definitely my favorites. And very, very good choice of pictures, some are marvelous.
    I've watched it several times.

  89. B.... ....

    Ein sehr schönes Video !
