Waits, Tom - Take It With Me Lyrics
Phone's off the hook
No one knows where we are
It's a long time since I
Drank champagne
The ocean is blue
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go
Old long since gone
Now way back when
We lived in Coney Island
Ain't no good thing
Ever dies
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go
Far far away a train
Whistle blows
Wherever you're goin
Wherever you've been
Waving good bye at the end
Of the day
You're up and you're over
And you're far away
Always for you, and
Forever yours
It felt just like the old days
We fell asleep on Beaula's porch
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go
All broken down by
The side of the road
I was never more alive or
Alone
I've worn the faces off
All the cards
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go
Children are playing
At the end of the day
Strangers are singing
On our lawn
It's got to be more
Than flesh and bone
All that you've loved
Is all you own
In a land there's a town
And in that town there's
A house
And in that house
There's a woman
And in that woman
There's a heart I love
I'm gonna take it
With me when I go
I'm gonna take it
With me when I go

Waits, Tom Take It With Me Comments
Fun fact: that song was released the same year the expression "I got something in my eye." was first used
In 2001, I thought I was going to die, soon. I had, by a fluke, survived a massive heart attack, in June of that year,....but at the time, statistics for survival, after a heart attack, were predictable,...6 months to a year. So each memory of my life up to that point in time,...I was only 47,....I tried to memorize and contemplate. I began thinking of all the wonderful things I would miss, if I died soon. I thought about things I would take or miss if I died. To my surprise, I survived and flourished,....as I am now 65. I made sure to ride my motorcycle every possible day, the weather was good. I partied with all my friends more,... & spent more time with my girlfriend. I got another kitten, quit my job,.....worked outdoors, in my garden, & contributed to helping out others in my community. This song is very meaningful to me.
Tears, every god-damned time! So good x
always for you, and forever yours
Man, I absolutely love this piece.
This song is my prayer. Simply perfection. I still remember the first time I heard this song. It had a profound effect on me that words can't describe. Actually it still does. A true masterpiece by Waits.
Children are playing at the end of the day
Strangers are singing on our lawn
It's got to be more than flesh and bone
All that you've loved is all you own.
I was 22 years old. Lost my first true love. Packed the car and my dog. Lived in the woods throughout Washington, Oregon and Northern California for 4 months. Listened to Tom Waits for hours and hours.
Tom Waits seems like a guy who really reached the American Dream. I can just imagine him having legendary summer evenings, drinking wine with friends, singing songs, playing the guitar. Always somehow obscure and private but a good guy smoking cigarettes with good friends in all walks of life. He’s probably done really a lot with his life that nobody will know about, the music was just one part of it...
It's probably as good as music can ever get. What a perfect song!
This will always be my favorite song
Apparently my generation listens to shit and doesn't care about master pieces anymore.
If this song doesn't make you cry, you need to have your tear ducts examined.
I love this song. I think of my husband every time I hear it.
Marc Martel does a great cover of this.
We sat in the truck waiting for the shuttle bus.
She took out this CD and played it.
We wept.
When the bus arrived she put the CD in her bag and said;
"I'm going to take it with me when I go."
We struggled to laugh.
The next I ever heard was three years later when her long years of suffering were over.
This will forever be our song, Dear Terry.
No words,, just an amazing song!!!!
First heard this yesterday for the first time Marc Martels version Is remarkable. Today I heard Tom Waits at his best.
Written on a child's gravestone: "first met when lost." If that's not a Tom Waits line, i don't know what is.
best songwriter ever....
I just had a listen to a few snippets from Rachel Price's cover of this tune. I've really liked some of her singing.
In this case, I HAD to pop over and hear the real thing. I've loved this track since it came out and am totally biased. I don't know, this is probably a song I wouldn't be happy hearing anyone but Tom sing. (S#$t - obsessed tonight. Now I've got to listen to at least a couple of covers!)
Sad and beautiful
Others try to cover it...singing like lost birds. This is it.
Why do 86 assholes not like this song?
Couldn’t feel more alive when suffering in aloneness
I play a little game with myself when I hear this song. Will it take me 5 - or 6 - seconds, before I start tearing up?
This song makes me cry.
I love the vast majority of Tom Waits' music. He truly is one of the great singer-songwriters. Personally, I always slightly favoured his more 'experimental' side. That said, I would dearly love for him to do a full album of pared-down ballads - just his voice and his piano - before he goes. It would be something special, I'm sure. I suspect that it would also propel him (belatedly) into the same bracket as the likes of Bob Dylan. Perhaps this is precisely why he would never do it. Any sort of full length album, any time soon would be much appreciated. Of course, he owes nobody anything at this point and never did to begin with. Thank you, Tom, for all the amazing music...
The clapped-out, slightly out-of-tune piano that Tom uses here (I guess deliberately) and the out-of-tune singing become part of the message of the song . . .
This son of a bitch has been torturing me since 1981.
Please check out Camille O'Sullivan's cover of this too. She nails it perfectly.
i hope I don’t live to see the day Tom waits goes. I start to cry as soon as I hear the first note of this song. There is nobody that holds a candle to Tom waits genius.
wonderful song, merci tom
Thank you Tom. No words could describe the beauty of this song...
Sorry for these questions but I wonder how the native speaker understands the meaning of 'I have worn the faces off all the cards...' - I cannot clearly understand what is the first assiciation that the English speaker would have here... for me it is like photographs but as I am not native I amd not sure it is correct... I never heard cards used as photos in English.. but otherewise I cannot get what it referes to. What it the poetic allusion or image that can be graspped by native speaker here. Also.. Beaula is just someone's name I believe... some realistic detail so typical for his lyrics? Thank you
Yury - the line about faces on cards is obscure even to a native speaker. All part of the magic. I've taken it to mean something like played the game (as in cards) of life so hard, he's worn out the cards. And yes, Beaula is a name, a rather old fashioned southern name. Just a beautiful poetic detail.
1.48 million people too mesmerized to hit like.
Damn you, Tom Waits.
I'm a grown ass man but I can't help crying listening to this song. And I can't stop playing this poet's music and having my heart ripped out. For the past 30 years.
Damn you, Tom Waits.
I don't mind when people perform a tom wait song at an open mic. I do it occasionally. I just love him. However I don't like when a famous artist tries to cover his songs. It always drives me insane.. It's like do you really think you're going to improve on his version ?no one cares about your cover of his songs. At the same time it doesn't bother me when people cover other people songs it's just Tom. Overall I think most artists understand this and know they are not anywhere near orbiting in the stratosphere of this beautiful human
I've just done a cover of this song. It's perhaps my favourite Tom Waits song. If you have any time please check it out on my page.
I would like this song to be the last song I will hear before I die...
I’m smiling softly through tears. What a simple, but incredibly powerful, statement this song is.

Hands down, the greatest love song ever written.

Rough and gentle, all at once. So beautiful and breathtaking.
Damn, this song brought a tear to my eye. I genuinely love Tom's music. Nothing else compares. I love to listen to him on a rainy day or nite with the front door open. Or when I get home from work and just disappear into his world of music.
Kacey Musgraves brought me here!
Beautiful
I'm sorry but I can't finish the song
Out of dislike or it's too heart-wrenching?

It's not that I've got anything special to offer in these comments , but Tom touches my soul so deeply in this song ( and many others ) that I just had to say , "Tom , you are so special to me . Keep on keepin' on forever . You are a splendid and heart-felt artist . " George Lewis, Sr.

Tom Waits is a genius songwriter and performer . This song would make a beautiful soundtrack for the right film , something softly sensitive and introspective . Tom creates so much feeling in just a small space . This song soothes me and makes me happy to be alive. George Lewis, Sr
Tom é incrível,amo a sua música.
One of the most moving songs ever written
This song and "Since I Put Your Picture In A Frame" are two halves of a whole.
Bill Janovitz's (Buffalo Tom) appreciation of this song brought me here.
Ahhhhhhh....I love EVERYTHING about this. The lyrics, the music, the voice, the recording with the creak of the chair at the slightly out-of-tune piano. Everything. It may be my favourite Tom Waits tune ever....But....There are so many.
Search for Marc Martel's version of this. It's what Freddie Mercury would sound like if he sung it........
Just beautiful
nicely done ol chap just lovely thanfk you
nicely done ol chap very hauntingly done
I love that you can hear the pedals on the piano being pressed and the creaking from his bench. Makes it so much more personal. It's not some sterile recording studio environment.
Tom waits .. you are beating my heart so hard it is bleeding ... I am speechless ❤️❤️❤️
So raw, painful,and beautiful.

Perfect
Jimmy J the beard scratch at the end is my favorite.
Of course Alan Rickman would chose this as his memorial song...
All that you're loved is all you own...
I played this for my mother on her death bed, she always loved Tom Waits. It's strange, I just knew this was my last song to her.
Then the next day I found out it was over. I buried her and couldn't help but think of this one again. "in that woman there's a heart I love,I'm gonna take it with me when I go"
This, and Come On Up to the House, are the only songs that can remind me that someone else out there has felt like this before, is maybe feeling this right now.
Here's to you, wherever or whoever you might be.
In a land there's a town
And in that town there's
A house
And in that house
There's a woman
And in that woman
There's a heart I love
Wrote this to my wife in a card.

there are times in my life i had no one, no one
The words here are what it all comes down to in many peoples lives and when the music is so tuned down and beautiful; it works because we have to maintain some kind of value or dignity even on a Monday morning, and I love those. Anyone else?

Beautiful
just breath taking. commented a while ago. i still listen. still haunts me. maybe my favorite song ever. by one of my favorites.
One of the very greatest songs by one of the very greatest songwriters. Mr Waits owes nothing to anyone at this point in his career but I sure would love it if he would release an album of songs with just him and a piano before he finally calls it a day. And I say this as a massive fan of his so-called 'difficult' 'experimental' stuff...
"All that you've loved is all you own..." A great line. Human life in a nutshell, if only people would listen...

Perfect, thanks.
Interesting. Alan Rickman wrote the lyrics to a song called "Take Me With You." There's a good cover by Elisabeth Fraser on YT.
Gonna be played at mine
I liked it
He is the most incredible lyricist I've ever seen....obtuse, yet cutting, insightful as all hell, and a strangely beautiful way of phrasing things in what has to be the most uniquely original style...Got nothing but sheer, incredulous respect for TW.
David Schmidt He’s marvelous! A real treat to know that there is someone who can capture what’s in my heart.
so schön
