Waits, Tom - San Diego Serenade Lyrics

I never saw the morning 'til I stayed up all night
I never saw the sunshine 'til you turned out the light
I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long
I never heard the melody, until I needed a song.

I never saw the white line, 'til I was leaving you behind
I never knew I needed you 'til I was caught up in a bind
I never spoke 'I love you' 'til I cursed you in vain,
I never felt my heartstrings until I nearly went insane.

I never saw the east coast 'til I move to the west
I never saw the moonlight until it shone off your breast
I never saw your heart 'til someone tried to steal, tried to steal it away
I never saw your tears until they rolled down your face.

    A.... H....

Absolutely well said. One of the best written songs in the history of mankind. The song says it all in so many ways and speaks to me in ways that I cannot even imagine. Absolutely brilliant music.

  39. 6.... ....

    G.... C....

Tom waits is simply the best so gifted and makes you think so much about life and love and your youth how special life ws when you were young and in love its just nostalgia at its best luv you tom

  42. 1.... ....

Simple but immensely poignant and beautiful. One of the best songs ever written, by anyone

    1.... ....

    You can say that again.

  43. 1.... ....

Simple but immensely poignant and beautiful. One of the best songs ever written, by anyone

  44. D.... ....

Its because people who likes Tom Waits are adults and mature people who knows that song should have a beautiful meaning and not just auto tune effects with some teenager repeating the same words over and over again Tom is a blessing in times like this

  45. M.... ....

I think that song just broke my heart.

  46. r.... ....

    This a fucking great song.

  47. M.... ....

You're lucky, I only discovered Waits when I was 19!

  48. R.... ....

I discovered Waits a couple of days ago and fell in love with his music head over heels... I can't let go of it, and when I do, it goes on playing in my head. Moving one like that, making you cry and then smile, is the greatest thing music can do. I bow to this man.

    R.... ....

RubySerendipity Why would you ever want to let go of it? If you can try and see him live. That's an extraordinary experience.

  49. m.... ....

    story of my life...

  50. D.... P....

    this was released in 1974

  51. f.... ....

good work from Mr. Waits as usual
    a.

  52. g.... ....

you're right. got the dates confused by a few years

  53. W.... ....

This album was released until 1974. Just saying.

  54. b.... c....

A long, long time ago I cried bitter tears playing this song over and over. It still brings back that feeling even now, when she's a distant memory. Probably the best expression of loss that I've ever heard.

  55. J.... P....

Bit of an unnecessarily aggressive comment there :/ Can't we all just enjoy the music?

  56. G.... ....

This was the song for the first dance at my wedding two years ago! Gorgeous, truthful study of REAL love... love that is hard, love that hurts, love that heals, love that doesn't forget wrongs but manages to use them to strengthen itself.

    This song is a masterpiece!

  57. d.... ....

    Touché.

  58. P.... X....

Sounds like KTYD from Santa Barbara....

  59. D.... ....

This song always makes me feel better. No matter what kind of mood i'm in.

  60. B.... ....

I just wish to God he would do another tour (even a small one). I would love to see him live but the scramble for tickets would be outrageous.

  61. W.... K....

Maybe because retards as yourself keep mentioning this idiot here.

  62. W.... K....

    Yes there is. Drinking.

  63. J.... C....

Is that possible to get bored of Tom Waits ?

  64. I.... ....

    @orinn99 Good music doesn't die.

  65. M.... ....

    Who is Justin Bieber?

    M.... ....

    Mark8395217 wrong place to learn

  66. S.... T....

@guyglowmore1 I think his first album came out in '73, so you may have your dates wrong. Nice tale though.

  67. j.... ....

who on earth could possibly not like this? I saw 1 dislike, come on, you gotta be kidding!!

  68. i.... ....

a simple song but so heart felt ....this is what music is ,words that touch your soul

  69. J.... C....

This was our first dance song at our wedding nine years ago. Fresh out of college and high on Tom Waits; we were and are so in love. Genius.

  70. s.... ....

it's all good, my friend. sorry if i over reacted, and acted like an idiot with regards to the personal insult. it just bothers me that someone with no talent can be so successful, while a genius like waits is a relative unknown. i've been around long enough to know that quality and quantity rarely go hand in hand. at least folks like us know quality when we hear it. peace.

  71. s.... ....

@Vermontist1... free promotion?? get a brain, will you please? do you really think that people who appreciate tom waits are going to listen to justin bieber?

  72. g.... ....

@damianakad oops. sorry you're right. dunno how i got that date so off must be my old timerz kicking in or somethingk. there goes my crediblility lol. also guess when i got those albums they were pretty fresh on the shelves. whole thing was pretty overwhelming at the time. now it's underwhelming

  73. l.... ....

@guyglowmore1 Interesting, considering he published the song in 1974. But I agree, fine music.

  74. T.... ....

One of the most under-rated songs EVER written.

    Pure gold.

  75. p.... ....

One person doesn't like white guys that sound like black guys.

  76. 2.... ....

@guyglowmore1 You have excellent taste in music! His music is so touching!

  77. a.... ....

    a perfect song

  78. E.... V....

  79. C.... W....

"Never saw my hometown till I stayed away too long."

  80. y.... e....

@orinn99 im 14 and your right, most people are just idiots and don't get proper music, it would take proper talent to ever write anything like this, but the music most people like could be written by anyone :(

  81. F.... M....

This song can just break my heart. I love Tom Waits.

  82. g.... ....

jammed on this song in the music shop today. also, after learning it on guitar i've recently did banjo and womandolyn. something about that simple chord progression with the c7 and the em7 really makes it unique. find that to be true with some other artists too they can use common chords and then add one or two little enhancements that fit right in with their brand.

  83. b.... ....

It warms my heart to know that someone who is 15 years old can appreciate such a musical genius! I'm glad there are people who still give the older songs a try. This particular song means a lot to my fiancé and I so we are planning to play it as we dance for the first time together as husband and wife at our reception. Thank you for this song, Tom. You are an absolutely masterful artist in more ways than one!

  84. m.... ....

....driving up pacific coast highway......thinking of all the homes you left behind...

  85. f.... ....

Simply amazing! If this song doesn't hit your soul then maybe you don't have one.

  86. T.... A....

First time I heard this song and entire Heart o Sat night fantastic album was driving through Big Sur fifteen yrs ago. A highly recommended combo!

  87. g.... ....

quit driving eh? kudos. or, maybe like most consumers you still drive but no longer listen to this song. whichever it is thanks for posting

  88. d.... ....

@guyglowmore1 I always used to listen to this song while I was driving, I think there's no better moment for it

  89. g.... ....

was listening to a far away fm radio station at 3am monday morning in my cabin loft in malibu and they played this song. that was around '69 or '70. knocked me out so i went the next day and got all three of tom's albums. what a treat. "closing time", "the heart of saturday night", and "Nighthawks at the Diner". All three are gems. Still moved by this fine song.

  90. j.... ....

The best of the best......1972..Tom Waits...one of my very favorites but all of Tom's
    are my favorites.....

  91. s.... ....

@demianakad ..i think it happens because young people just don't know any better. the scary thing is that when they get older, they probably still will not know quality when they hear it...at least we do :)

  92. d.... ....

@skontch1 Yes, but I still wonder why it happens

  93. s.... ....

i think i just figured out what's wrong with this country...justin bieber get over 300 million views and this song gets less than 4000...

  94. s.... ....

    magnificent

  95. d.... ....

    @gothfaerie87 Yeah!
