Waits, Tom - Pony Lyrics
I've seen it all boys
I've been all over
Been everywhere in the
Whole wide world
I rode the high line
I danced real slow
With Ida Jane
I was full of wonder
When I left Murfreesboro
Now I am full of hollow
On Maxwell street...
And I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
I walked from Natchez
To Hushpukena
I built a fire by the side
Of the road
I worked for nothin in a
Belzoni saw mill. I caught a
Blind out on the B and O
Talullah's friendly Belzoni ain't so
A 44'll get you 99
And I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
Knows the way back home
I run my race with burnt face Jake
Gave him a Manzanita cross
I lived on nothin
But dreams and train smoke
Somehow my watch and chain
Got lost
I wish I was home in Evelyn's Kitchen
With old Gyp curled around my feet
And I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
Knows the way back home
I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
Knows the way back home

Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica.
If that ain't heartbreak, it don't exist.
"I've lived on nothin' but dreams and train smoke..." Greatest song line ever.
Greatest ever? I gotta say there are better
The best song line ever is "The delivery room is as still as a tomb / I fuck the child while it's still in your womb." But this one is pretty good too.

One of the most poignant songs ever written.
I don't ever sing it without tears. I hope our pony (our body) gets us all back home.
I adore this song
I love it when you share pieces of your heart with me. You are my truth. You are my home. You are my everything.
I go back to this tune over and over and over, so Love it!!
I love Tom Waits, so many great lyrics.

Tom Wits one of the best singer songwriter in modern music time...Amazing sence and feel for Humans and understanding of Life..Combined with Beuitiful Music...Tom Waits thank you for Helping in Hard times and strenghten in Good Times...Exelent work..
Kevin Radley that's funny (fate?). My friend lives in Sonoma I'm visiting from east coast this year.
Cool, there is an unspoken rule,,,,, don't approach him.,,,,, he's just a guy in the street as the locals say. BTW, went to dinner once and this couple is coming down the street towards us,,,but we head up the stairs first and meet the greeter, she asks us if we wanna go in the bar first or the restaurant, I turn my head to ask my wife what she wants to do, and boom I'm like staring 10" in to the face of Tom Waits, he immediately looks down, in a please don't talk to me..look.It was the first time i understood the word God-smacked.....
Same with Stephen king on my end of the world. Man around town and if you catch his eye a nod does more than a bother
HA, see. BTW we went to the dinner party which was up stairs, he was with his wife,,in the downstairs restaurant, I knew I couldn't mention it to the folks some 40 people,,,,, dang they would have rushed down stairs,,, no way as I knew it was his birthday.
Gobsmacked, Kevin ; ) And I have seen Tom Waits twice - Once when he did a short set at a benefit show I saw at The Shrine in LA, and once in a full performance at The Wiltern. This was probably 1999-2000..........Brilliant
a 44 will get you 99 brilliant lyrics you can hear feel smell taste the disparity in his lyrics
I live in Belzoni Mississippi!!!! Tom has taste!!!!!
that's true
+Bob Cobb Do you own a 44?
@NotoTruth by the way what is 44? and 99? what does waits mean "a 44 will get you a 99"? thank you so much
My favourite Wait's song
mine too.
Almost as good as his 80s work
We always come home with tom....1
There is NO ONE like Tom Waits. T true poet, original. Deep. Sigh. Thanks for the great post.
By the way, this is the saddest song ever written, and if it doesn't make you bawl like a baby, then you're not really human.
Hushpuckena is place in the middle of the road on Hwy. 61 about 10 miles south of Clarksdale, MS. However, you won't find it on any recent map. I went there about 12 or 13 years ago with the intent of stealing the population sign and hanging it in my bedroom as a memento. That is, until I realized there was no sign to be had.
Damn bro. You have a good ear. I have been listening to this song for years and had not noticed.
Isn't he wonderful. I was living in a flea pit boarding house with nothing but an old TV and a CD player, even my dog was being cared for by others (no dogs in boarding houses).
"I wish I was home in Evelyn's Kitchen
With old Gyp curled around my feet"
The day I was told me dog Eddie was welcome I cried tears of joy.
I love the lyrics, "I lived on nothing but dreams and train smoke".
To me its a song about faith,a travelling fellow dotting in and out of places, being full of wonder in Murfreesboro to feelling hollow on Maxwell St,wishing he was at home in Evelyns kitchen. The fellow in the song, has nothing, wishes for a happier time from the past to return,as opposed to working for nothing in Belzoni, and living on "Train Smoke".
Brilliant song though, possibly a high point,in an all round incredible album!
I also heard this song when Sarah Watkins sang it on the Ukulele. She's adorable to begin with, but singing Tom waits...aaaahhhhh.
Or maybe a hard twang! Never the less, it adds to the effect x
The first time I heard this song, it was performed live by Nickel Creek (6 yrs ago-ish)... Sara Watkins to be specific- playing it solo on a ukulele- She said she had heard it in a coffee shop that afternoon, learned it before the show, and then brought me to tears playing it live for us that night... even my brother cried (but don't tell him I told you so). I immediately went and bought this album and have listened to it so much, I've worn it out. This is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Thank you for post, Oracle428. I just listened to Sara Watkins' version for the first time, my introduction to her work.
at 3:08? I think a string broke!
@TheReegar your insight adds a dimension to this song that has brought me to tears.
Well. it's kind of a beautiful thing, and entirely original and pure.
mule variations... fuuuuuckin awesome!
