Waits, Tom - Dirt In The Ground Lyrics
What does it matter, a dream of love
Or a dream of lies
We're all gonna be in the same place
When we die
Your spirit don't leave knowing
And the wind through your bones
Is all that remains
And we're all gonna be
We're all gonna be
Just dirt in the ground
The quill from a buzzard
The blood writes the word
I want to know am I the sky
Or a bird
And heaven is full
We're chained to the world
And we all gotta pull
And we're all gonna be
Just dirt in the ground
Now the killer was smiling
With nerves made of stone
He climbed the stairs
And the gallows groaned
And the people's hearts were pounding
They were throbbing, they were red
As he swung out ofver the crowd
I heard the hangman said
We're all gonna be
Just dirt in the ground
Now Cain slew Abel
He killed him with a stone
The sky cracked open
And the thunder groaned
Along a river of flesh
Can these dry bones live?
Ask a king or a beggar
And the answer they'll give
Is we're all gonna be
Yea yeah
We're all gonna be just
Dirt in the ground

Waits, Tom Dirt In The Ground Comments
Somos humanos animales trabajando en lo urbano
The lyrics are pure poetry
“When the end comes to this old world
The righteous will cry and the rest will curl up
God won't take the time
To sort your ashes from mine
Cause we zig and zag between good and bad
Stumble and fall on right and wrong
Cause the tumbling dice with the luck of the draw
Just leads us on.”
-Camper Van Beethoven, “When I Win the Lottery”.
I actually get a little uplifted by this song
You may be poor now, and the guy down the street from you is the richest man alive
Yet when the time comes, we're all in a equal position when we die
Hallelujah. Tom Waits is a f******g Genius
I concur wholeheartedly.
REAL TRUE SONG
When my mum was little my nan used to listen to this smacked off her face off of H when her 3 daughters were running around the house
-M.L.M
when your mom was a little girl, her mom (your grandmother) would listen to this while on Heroin, while your mom and her two sisters ran around? if this song came out in 92...that makes you maybe 16-20? this comment just made me feel incredibly old.

anyone else know any tom waits songs like this one?
SerNoddicusTheGallant ..All of his album 'Bone Machine' has a similar vibe and production style to this song. Lyrically all the songs are in the same ball park.
SerNoddicusTheGallant all of them start with same album song a little rain never hurt no one , but literally all of his songs are just as good
The best jazz piece I ever heard...

If ever there was a game that should have had this song, it would be Manhunt.
+Doctor Bane why? :D
@Umut Barış Dinç Have you ever played Manhunt? (Not being rude or anything, just curious.)

@Umut Barış Dinç Eh, maybe. Or Fallout.
My brother played this song at our fathers funeral without telling anyone beforehand. It was very fitting.
i want it played at mine!!!
I feel ya. My dad died when I was 8 now I'm almost 19 and I would have wanted this song played then. Keep ya head up
Best song ever? Best song ever.
Done did a cover: https://soundcloud.com/jameswillettsmusic/dirt-in-the-ground-tom-waits-cover
+James Willetts It was pretty good.
+James Willetts Bravo, made it your own whilst keeping true to the tone of the song.
Many thanks, wise fool
Songs this was sampled into:
(Just in case you were wondering)
-Everlast: I I Get By
-Grieves: Scar Gardens
Majk - Blöt hund
Fuck Everlast, damn, just hearing that is ... depressing .... or devastating even, I feel like something inside me just died. Tom Deserve much, much better
+ Altarofdoom ... I can live with that, Dax is alright, I can totally see that, but just not Everlast, that's just fucked up.
Aesop Waits - Dirt City *********

Thanks for posting that; appreciated.
Tom Waits has the best visuals in his lyrics. No need for videos to his music.
The Jerry and Tom movie brought me here. Love that movie and I wanted to here that song that instantly made me think of Tiffany. And in a good way too. This picture is just too nostalgic, coupled with the song, for me not keep watching this.
tdg en la casa
We're chained to the world and we all gotta pull...
im sorry denise
Just the song... and about two minutes of dead air at the end...?
to contemplate.
"just the song" is all you need.
Aparantely it's surprisingly easy once you lose your soul.
How can you not like tom waits?
I fucking love this song
NO YOU DONT, I LISTEN TO TOM WAITS ALONE...SO...IM NOT ALONE
scratchy voice scratchy voice scratchy voice... yell moan ....... i sounded like this once when I had strip throat, and hadnt had drink of liquid in 4 days.
If I had a voice as epic as Tom Waits, I'd honestly never shut up :)
Puts me back in the dark shit-hole in the wall of a bar that I first heard it in on suicide Tuesday feet first in withdrawl back hurt feeling hopeless down to my last cigarette flat broke sipping a 50 cent PBR.......We chain to the world and we all gotta pull.....The earth died screaming as I lay dreaming.
absolutely filthy...in every good way...you couldn't slide a peice of paper under this song and humanity's base
Everlast. I Get By. Check It Out.
@plainandnotsimple GJ on one of my favourite youtube comments, lol.
@wasteland70 No you don't. I knew his music back in my teens. It's all I listened to in my teens, it didn't put me in depression, but it certainly intensified it 10 fold. I still love this guys music to this day. I have slowly allowed myself to pull myself out of those years thanks to my son coming into this world. I guess if you never had depression, then maybe you would have wanted to know this music back in your teens.
one of my very favourite tom songs ... i love the really slow moody ones ... that clock kills me
happy fucking valentines day everyone
here we are
i just buried my father and this is the song i chose for when they carried his coffin away
I love how his voice cracks when he sings "the sky cracked open."
Bone Machine is one of my top 5 albums... I'm currently on day three of a "Tom Waits Only" week. Nothing else. Pretty sweet week so far.. i feel deranged and i've been drinking alot..
wow......... i....i.....i got no words really
This song makes me want to cry. It makes me want to get blind drunk. It makes me want to fight. It makes me want to hold my girlfriend close and never let go. It makes me want to live more than I do.
This is Tom's Best song and that saying a ton
@ColdOasisU2 blues rock, that is.
@ComaSeason Best time to listen to him
@sugarydonkey
Good man!
@ColdOasisU2 well.. its not exactly rock
@tuningdiode Because that stupid fuck sampled this song. And ruined it. I mean, completely shit-on-it ruined it.
It took Jeff Buckley to find the heart and soul of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. The original version doesn't even sound like a good song, just a monotonous dirge.
Put that in your pipes and smoke it.
one of my favourite albums by any artist in rock
@ComaSeason Me, too. I wish I'd found his music when I was in my teens.
@aboo12195 good job. Try to remember these lyrics, they help you appreciate life.
so...I definitely thanked Tom Waits in my senior section of the yearbook...
I'm actually not a huge Cohen fan, but I definitely don't feel that his music is contrived in any way- just not my taste. I could wax pretentious about originality and use large words to make myself sound intelligent so as to prove my edgy point about originality in music, but what's the point? Like it or don't, and quit whining about what you consider 'offensive' in others' musical works.
@petemayo I feel the same way as you about "Hallelujah"... and I feel the same way about a lot of Cohen's material but his album Songs of Love and Hate is one that I feel differently about. For example his song Avalanche is incredibly heartfelt in my opinion, you can feel the desparation... it's beautiful, give it a try
@MDeckman4491 I hear you, I only know the artists by their works. Cohen bugs me because it doesn't seem/sound sincere. His poetry and what I have heard of his music, especially exemplified in the hallelujah song, is that it is an obvious topic delt with in an obvious way, it seems to be lacking in heart and originality and comes off contrived which is an inexcusable offense to me. I hate things that feel formulaic or obvious, I feel there is so much value behind originality and oft dismissed.
@petemayo not a hipster, I bumped the fuck out of pretty hate machine and plenty of ziggy when i was in high school, but dude, its leonard fucking cohen man, like they're in different genres let alone different leagues, not comparable, and thats not even a diss to reznor or bowie, they'd both probably agree with me out of sheer humility at least if not true affinity for the artist, i'd bet you both of them listen to him. and dylan was basically woody guthrie+leonard cohen.
@MDeckman4491 Bluff taken & challenge accepted, I dare you to find a cohen song that is half as good as nin "Right Where It Belongs" or as good as bowie's "quicksand" or "changes" I mean goddamn. Don't be pop-aphobic, if you are then your just a hipster :)
@petemayo and for the record, i also hate hallelujah as a song, but as a poem it is beautiful. as is all of cohens poetry.
@petemayo you're out of your mind... trent reznor or david bowie over leonard cohen? you should realize that they're both pop idiots and cohen is a poet, a true poet.
Beautiful song. Glad I found it.
@TheBigDaddyVic Hip hop?
"Beautiful melodies, telling me terrible things." - Tom Waits
This is absolutely brilliant, how come ive never heard of this guy?
Spinning this on plastic right now. Must own.
Such a beautiful song. I love the lyrics.
now is all that's real!
Live for today yeah yeah!
I wrote these lyrics in my High School Yearbook.
@TheSobek LOL! Glad someone appreciates the unfair assholishness I administer among the innocent and happy. Trolling on the internet isn't as fun as it used to be too many emotions and taking everything seriousely. I thought people listening to a song ripe with fatalism/defeatism/determinism would be a little bit more hardened LOL
@petemayo Yeah, her comments are baffling, but we're all gonna end up as dirt in the ground.
Comment comparer Léonard Cohen à Tom Waits ????
Et puis ... Pourquoi toujours classifier, segmenter ou cloisonner ?
Aimons les gens pour ce qu'ils sont ! C'est tout !
@catherinepcs Why not :) it's not a personal offense, it just amazes me that so many people could like that bland song. Go for it attack say something, you like tom waits so your taste in music doesnt suck, LOL WTF is low road? you know what is low road? claiming someone else is using the low road. You just said I won't be snobby and take the low road which equals I won't be snobby because I am too snobby. Get with it, say what you feel don't be offended.
@petemayo To me, Leonard Cohen is amazing and Hallelujah is one of his best! I don't agree with all of your choices either, but I'm not going to take the snobby, "your taste in music sucks" low road with the WTFs and insults to your musical preferences. As you said, to each his/her own.
@catherinepcs Leonard Cohen??? WTF? I hate that Hallelujah song can't understand how anyone would like it.
As far as good writers Waits is awesome, Dylan is great, so is Barrett, Bowie, Trent Reznor, Tod Ashley (firewater), Lou Reed and tons more ... but not Cohen
To each his/her own.
@Mugulord woooowwww
Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan...singers and songwriters don't get any better than these three.
Tim Buckley also.
