Waits, Tom - Clap Hands Lyrics

Sane, sane, they're all insane
The fireman's blind, the conductor's lame
A Cincinnati jacket and a sad luck dame
Hanging out the window with a bottle full of rain
Clap hands. Clap hands
Clap hands. Clap hands

Said roar, roar the thunder and the roar
Son of a bitch is never comin' back here no more
Moon in the window, a bird on the pole
Can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal

Clap hands. Clap hands
Clap hands. Clap hands

Steam, steam a hundred bad dreams
Goin' up to Harlem with a pistol in his jeans
A fifty dollar bill inside of Palladin's hat
And nobody's sure where Mr. Knickerbocker's at

Said roar, roar the thunder and the roar
Son of a bitch is never comin' back here no more
Moon in the window, a bird on the pole
Can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal
Clap hands. Clap hands
Clap hands. Clap hands

Shine, shine a Roosevelt dime
All the way to Baltimore and runnin' out of time
Salvation Army seemed to wind up in the hole
They all went to Heaven in a little row boat

Clap hands. Clap hands
Clap hands. Clap hands

Waits, Tom Clap Hands Comments
  1. d.... ....

This song makes me imagine Papa Legba singing and guiding a bunch of dancing skeletons through the city, while people watch hypnotized and unsure why they’re so fixated on this man’s words

  2. R.... H....

holy shit i have been looking for this song for like 10 years

  3. T.... M....

    Playing with Bones.
    Head is broken.
    Clapping
    Hands

  4. F.... U....

    Great song!!!

  5. D.... ....

Great song, that requires one to research what a Paladines hat is: The jury isn't out on this one. It was both a medieval hat or helmet constructed of hammered steel worn my military men, constructed in such manner that it sort of resembled, a modern day ball cap.

  6. E.... W....

Really gives me them Breaking Bad vibes.

  7. C.... G....

The guitar on this is very unusual, but it fits the song perfectly.

  8. g.... r....

    7️⃣0️⃣📢

  9. I.... F....

The percussion feels vaguely 'gamelan'... does anybody else hear that?
It makes for a surreal and vivid experience when layered with the rough/rocky texture of the song otherwise. It's a perfect contrast of contexts that creates 'magic'. This is mesmerising...

  10. g.... r....

    one of tom's best songs

  11. m.... ....

How great. Discover such song at 50 yo... !!

  19. Q.... ....

I think this was my first song by Tom Waits, many years ago. Not my last!

  20. M.... C....

    Soy viciado en T.W.

  21. K.... D....

Great song from a great album. Raindogs, Swordfishtrombones, Black Rider, Big Time and Bone Machine, the soundtrack of my young 20's.

  22. M.... g....

That guitar at 2:16 is like something from another planet... It sounds amazing and yet creepy and alien, it's super hard to describe...

  23. L.... M....

Love this shit. Gets my head banging every time! "Salvation army always seems to wind up in the hole." Sick.

  24. s.... a....

This song feels like a women removing their facade of domestication, running out naked together into the woods screaming and howling, holding hands, finally free and wild, at last engaging with their untamed nature.
Fascinating how each experience a song profoundly differently.

    s.... a....

I think you've been smoking the drugs again, son.

    s.... a....

Doctor Turdmidget I think that’s not funny, doctor

  25. R.... R....

Oh yeah!! Centering the soul in the right place.

  26. S.... H....

Listend to this album back in 2000 when I was in de jungle doing fieldwork with some indians in Amazonia. It will always be connected to liying in my hummock at night surrunded by the sound of Moskitos trying hard to get through to me (and eventually they did when a cucroach had bitten a hole in the moskito net). One of my favoured albums ever.

  27. s.... ....

Great album. What the fuck is Castle Rock?

  28. L.... ....

isnt this intro is marsupilami's song?
beyler bu giriş kısım marsupilamideki şarkı değil mi aq?

This is the song that got me into the brilliant music of Tom Waits.

  33. D.... T....

This is some deep, fog filled swamp that hosts some crazy ass hillbillys type of music

  34. A.... P....

Why does this song sound like you would be in the soundtrack for Donkey Kong Country Returns: Cliff Stage

  35. D.... T....

    Sounds like starting a ritual

  36. R.... S....

    Marc Ribot.

  37. B.... D....

Has a breaking bad like feel to it.

  38. c.... ....

"We can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal. Clap ya hands."

  39. A.... C....

  42. W.... L....

Ol' Tom frost almost never sold out...

  43. J.... N....

What are the musical influences here - Steve Reich, Indonesian gamelan, a hint of a blues structure . . . ? Tom Waits has a knack of assembling sympathetic musicians able to realise his ideas . . .

  44. V.... C....

is that bret easton ellis on the cover?

  45. P.... M....

Peaky fookin blinders.. good music is good music yo. No need to be a dick about it

Nick Cave, you owe this man

    T.... D....

Nick Cave is a spoilt private school boy. From Nick Cave on they don't kill themselves, please review Morrison hotel by tism. Sorry mate when I was a drugged out teenager I thought Cave was cool. I matured and saw how shallow it all was, I would of forgave him if he didn't team up with Kylie, it's too commercial man! Tom would prefer to sew a cows udder to his face than go down that track. LOL Checkout Damien Cowell's dc3 album.

  54. S.... Y....

Also in 3rd episode of the British show "Peaky Blinders" - SNY

Tom is simply the greatest human there ever was.

  63. D.... ....

    SO damn good!

  64. T.... ....

'You can always find a millionaire to shovel a load of coal'. Genius. It seems to be a reference to war when the social classes were reversed - mainly it was working class people that did the proper fighting while millionaires were giving menial jobs.

    T.... ....

You deserve more likes, probably American audiences LOL

    T.... ....

I think it's more of a sarcastic comment - of course you'll never find a millionaire to shovel all the coal.

  65. B.... ....

All you castle rock folks need to give Rain Dogs a full playthru

  66. F.... S....

Hard to remember when I wasn't a Waits fan. Don't forget he played a big part in 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs'....

  67. H.... ....

My great taste in music brought me here..

  68. S.... ....

Who dislikes this does not understand music at all! This is creative genius & beyond …

  69. R.... C....

I'm so glad I got to find out about this song from Little Criminals. This song has such an interesting vibe , especially with the background noise

  70. R.... C....

Thomas Shelby sealing race pitch deals anyone?

  71. L.... 5....

Waits, this cat makes me feel cooler than I already am. With the howl of the rain dogs- they put an extra zig in my zag. The Duke of Bohemia staggering through another neon night with two women under each arm- burning up our way towards some salacious destiny. But Tom, man-he never waits...for no one.

  75. J.... L....

the guitar solo at 2:05 is simply mind-bending

There is something so powerful about this song!

    T.... S....

The guy is a real smart artist, try saying it fast. They are few and far between.

  83. E.... E....

The song you play when y'know karma is too scared to touch ya.

    Now that's style

  84. R.... D....

Reminds me of a underground level soundtrack on Super Mario

  85. M.... ....

This song sounds like a typical american tv series with someone wearing a cowboy hat in a small town.

  86. D.... 4....

“ Hanging out the window with a bottle full of rain, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands “

  87. W.... R....

Fun fact, in the movie the book of eli. When eli goes to get his iPod charged, tom waits is the engineer who charges it for him.

    W.... R....

Tom cameos are the best. I always get a little excited.

  88. T.... ....

    Beautiful

  89. F.... D....

Argh, enough with Castle Rock already... This song's been great for over thirty years.

    F.... D....

True but Castle Rock introduced it to a new group of fans.

  90. D.... ....

    castle Rock brought me here

  91. S.... N....

Anyone else here from Castle Rock?

    S.... N....

    Stormy Night born and raised.

  92. S.... X....

Castle Rock. I should have known! I love Tom Waits’ music, but he ha a huge catalogue, so I haven’t heard them all. But, just about every time I hear a surrealistic, highly original tune sung by a gravelly-voiced man, it’s usually Tom Waits. I’ll definitely be adding this song to my library ASAP.

    S.... X....

You wrote the exact same experience and feeling that I have.

  93. J.... M....
