Violent Femmes - World Without Mercy Lyrics

When your words have no meaning
and you're known as no one,
am I someone to you,
someone to turn to,
even when others turn away?
Even though others turn away?

When history blurs,
and every man, women, and child,
are left outside with no phones to be dialed,
you can't call me, I can't you.
You can't call me, I can't you.

In a world without mercy,
people dine outside your door.
In a world without mercy,
you don't have to lie anymore.
You don't have to cry anymore.

When laughter loses all its humor
and the joke is on you,
don't take it so personal,
all this world reversal.
The things they said don't matter anyway.
The things they said don't matter anyway.

In a world without mercy,
people dine outside your door.
In a world without mercy,
you don't have to lie anymore.
You don't have to cry anymore.

Oh, can it be so painful?
Can it be so blind?
Love is vicious angel,
fluttering wings, trapped inside your mind.

When your words have no meaning
and you're known as no one,
am I someone to you,
someone to turn to,
even when others turn away?

Thanks a million for uploading this! I have been looking for this for years. My old original cassette version had this song and another one - Two People, I later bought the album download and both these songs were missing! Two of the best songs on the entire album and REMOVED! They do not appear to be available anywhere else either, there is no compilation or live album that I have been able to find them. You need to guard this song as it is a real difficult one to find.

    R.... G....

YES!! "Two People" rocks as well!!

I've been looking for this song for years. Great song but dark. I was beginning to think I imagined it all those years ago. I did do a lot acid at the time ...... haha kidding

  3. E.... L....

    Beautiful

Damn near impossible to find STILL. It was my favorite cut from the record, made me feel like the Femmes had so much more potential to be Beatlesque than they obviously were. Still loved them, just been miffed for 30 years that I couldn't find it again

the song is so sad because is true, any empty pop crap with millions of views, and this so few,the world is so full of man-made cruelty, can't stop thinking of people in Syria

  6. J.... P....

Some day a pop star is gonna cover this song and it will be the massive hit it deserves to be. So incredibly written.

I had this on an album which I put on cassette tape, which I still have. I don't have a cassette player though. Great song

  9. T.... ....

Yes, it is Victor. He wrote the song, as well. The song is on the cassette version of the album and is also on the Children Of The Revolution single.

    what a nice song

Depending on how much legwork you want to do and how much you want to spend, it's possible to get a digital copy of this song, as some import CD versions of the album "The Blind Leading The Naked" contain this track. There's a copy listed on eBay right now for 12 bucks plus however much shipping from Australia would cost.

    Fruit yeah! Love this song.

@femmesfanatic - Yes, that is indeed Victor DeLorenzo singing this song. He does a good job! He had 3 solo albums, too, which are all very well done.

I have been searching and searching for this song in a digital format. It is killing me that I can't find it. I wish I had a way to get an MP3 of this!

  15. T.... ....

I can't believe that this song is so close to being forgotten by the world... such a universal story, and told with such feeling and art.

  16. F.... M....

@thesnobs yep, it is dilorenzo. I rememeber on the liner notes, they had dedicated this song to the memory of Noel Coward.

What a find...i only ever had this on the BLTN CASSETTE! NEVER even in the napster days could I find this beautiful song. Haven't heard this since 1992.

@femmesfanatic Thanks a lot for your comment. Unfortunately I can't answer to your questions. I've recorded this (i.e. the complete album) in 1988; as I know this song was not released in all the editions of "The blind leading the naked".
    Best regards,
    Thesnobs
