Violent Femmes - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? Lyrics

I needed time to realize my crime
It was let me love and steal
I did dances inside my mind
Now how can I be real

Do you really want to hurt me?
Do you really want to make me cry?
No I don t really want to hurt you

Then lovers always asked me:
Why why why why in my mind my memory's burning
What's your favorite color of your favorite car?
I took a step
The step was learning that that's a step beyond a step too far

Do you really want to hurt me?
Do you really want to make me cry?
No I don't really want to hurt you

I told the truth but it was still a lie
The words are few
Some are unspoken
I could sleep four thousand years
Man of sorrows word unbroken
His sweat like blood came down like tears
I've been talking
But believe me
I know that it's true now that there's no more
I don't know
I'm in love and love's the reason I'm not prepared to let you let me go
So if it's love you want
Then take all of me
It's this love I want
I can finally see

Do I really want to hurt you?
Do I really want to make you cry?
Yes I suppose I want to hurt you
You told the truth but it was still a lie

  16. G.... O....

Great version of our track but I pee on all the naff comments from folk who have contributed nothing but flatulence.

    G.... O....

I get the feeling most of these comments are from people who weren't even living at the time the original came out. I know I was....and was completely blown away. Always a fan, always. <3

    G.... O....

And that's why I love you and had the best time@your Midsummer Nights Dream themed bday party@King's Cross many moons ago. I'm still pissed that Phillip Salon had on the exact same "Queen of the Fairies" costume I had made by Kyri(later of Ghost)in PINK that I had 1st in white. I looked better obviously...and still do. Tell him "The Americans" said "Hello!" That night was indeed a Midsummer Nights Dream as it was EPIC and just after the summer solstice. Thank you for a fabulous evening. And the swings were BRILLIANT!!! Xo!

  17. M.... C....

    Great cover. luv it ☄🎋🎸🎶🎶💖🏡

  18. S.... C....

This sounds so different than the original vomit inducing version and is so good they should have just changed the lyrics and it would have been their song... and in fact one of their best songs.

    S.... C....

My apologies for the rude comment George. Hope you're doing well.

    S.... C....

You know, that's pretty rude...especially because the song in and of itself is brilliant. I loved Culture Clubs ORIGINAL....and this is a nice cover. Give some credit where it's due. The song has to be brilliant first. The original can never be outdone. Maybe you weren't around at that time, I don't know. This song was something special in it's original form, for many many people. I love Gordon Gano and The Femmes, but dude did not even write the song. That was Roy Hay, Boy George, Mikey Craig, and Jon Moss. I don't want to fight. I just wanted to clarify and give credit where it is certainly due.

  19. F.... M....

Great cover to a mediocre song at best, fantastic bouzouki playing by Brian rict

    F.... M....

Yet loads better than all of your efforts!

  20. L.... T....

Tonight I was watching an episode of Sabrina the teenage witch when she and her friends go to a meet & greet of Violent Femmes and I ended up listening this awesome cover. <3

    L.... T....

    K.... L....

Kimbler Lewis Yes, more than anything!

  31. M.... D....

    Lovely song ♡♡

  32. M.... D....

Fall in love with this stupid song :(

    M.... D....

That dank break up music though. The Femmes always got your back.

  33. s.... ....

    o mrd deja tant d'années

  34. G.... A....

Bloody brilliant version of a pretty average at best original. In reply to lsnows, how about Black Francis from the Pixies. A similar sort of dark, whiney, pitchey, brilliant voice.

    G.... A....

    Silly twat!

    G.... A....

Black Francis is a brilliant comparison. Came here after listening to some live Pixies.

    G.... A....

Never liked that much this song then, but it is a great song, and a superb production

    G.... A....

The Gouge Away guy might say that I guess.

    G.... A....

Average original? I like this version but the original is clearly better

  35. K.... C....

    best album

  36. S.... P....

    *George

  37. Z.... F....

I lie to myself and say its the original

  38. d.... ....

actually the lyrics are somewhat different.

    d.... ....

My favorite line has always been, "in my mind my memory's burning, what's your favorite color of your favorite car" and I just realized it's not in the original version.

  39. l.... ....

Gordon Gano's voice is something amazing: whiny, yet aggressive, high-pitched, but menacing, vulnerable, yet filled with rage. Nobody does it like he does it, though Billy Corgan comes close.

    l.... ....

I have always believed he learned it from listening to Tom Verlaine of Television. Not so much the anger, but the whiny thing for sure. I"d bet money Gordon Gano listened the hell out of Television's Marquee Moon album in his youth.

    l.... ....

    yep, tom verlaine

    l.... ....

    perry farrel in the 80s

  40. M.... W....

God bless Gordon Gano and his crew!

  41. J.... ....

I have to agree with the others who posted that this version is far superior to the original. Somehow Violent Femmes find a way to bring the heart out of everything they do. Now, dance MF!!! ;-)

  42. k.... s....

12 people got hurt and cried

  43. M.... ....

i dont know if the original is crappy, but I like this one better anyways

  44. T.... ....

WRONG! Original written by Boy George about Kirk Brandon. Get ur facts right!

    T.... ....

It doesn't say originally written; it says originally performed. Also, in 2007, Boy George said that the song was "not just about Culture Club's drummer Jon Moss, my boyfriend at the time. It was about all the guys I dated at that time in my life." with no specific mention of Kirk Brandon.

  45. o.... ....

Simply fantastic. Up there with their cover of Crazy.

    o.... ....

Better than their cover of crazy...in my opinion :)

  46. s.... ....

Better version than culture club hands down.

  47. l.... ....

EXCELENT cover! This clip gonna be in my favourites right now.

  48. V.... ....

    Great song!

  49. R.... M....

It's funny how so many people are obsessed with plagiarism in music. But listen to this cover song and hear how much better it is than the original. Well done to bands who make something great out of crappy songs !

  50. j.... m....

@sanjurodog weird,i live in my brothers attic

  51. R.... ....

    @sanjurodog hahahah.

  52. a.... ....

@polariada you have excellent taste :)

  53. b.... ....

@PunkyLeDementiel It was written by Culture Club, not Heptones. The Heptones did a cover of it in 86 on the Changing Times album. DYRWTHM is from 1982.

  54. b.... ....

@PunkyLeDementiel It was written by Culture Club, not Heptones.

  60. P.... ....
